Buy physical media, now.Companies will not give up their digital future. Sure some might but most will not.If you do not own the files physically, you dont own shit.>b-b-b-but I'll just put it on my NAS or HDDlook I've been down that road. I still have discs with my childhood DVD photos that still load on them 18 years later. I dont own any of those storage devices anymore that I had.
>>109239009or i could just pirate everything
>>109239034You could, but then you wouldn't get the collecting aspect on a shelf, or the ability to pop in a disc in a player.
>>109239039>it's a funko pop reddit autist thingI understand you disctards a lot more now.
>>109239058So you're going to bet your entire storage of media on a lightning strike or critical failure in your HDD's? The cost of maintenance of electricity that you'll totally maintain over the course of decades?Face it, physical media is decentralized and better. DVD lasts for 20+ years and probably longer just depends on how well you preserve them. You can bring them to parties or family gatheringsBlurays last for 50+ years, longer than your lifespan right now unless you live to 90+.Mdiscs are even more hardened and last theoretically over 100+ years if preserved. All with zero power, zero bullshit, zero maintenance with artwork and a physical presence.

>>109239086your digital collection lasts for as long as your backup strategy. It survives the physical media that underlies it. You can make it redundant at the hardware and software level. You just have skill issues
>>109239092>>109239093>it won't deteriorate like physical media inevitably will>"Hard drives (HDDs) typically last 4 to 8 years, but failures often follow a "bathtub curve". They are most likely to fail early in life due to manufacturing defects or shipping damage, or much later as mechanical parts wear out. By year three, about 12% of drives experience issues, and after eight years, failure becomes a coin flip."For the price of one HDD, you can buy like 25 bulk blurays which will last over 50 years if stored properly.

>>109239135because its not physical media, what you bought is just a locked down blob that you are allowed to use should some criteria meet i.e. the disc allows you to read the contents of it on a black box that is that playstation. Real physical media is the one you own, preferbly source code for it, but at least a binary you can run or copy should the original get scratchedwhat you have is drm locked ewaste not some physical copy
>>109239009Wow, that's a lot of digital Jew on the shelves, Anon. Some of that shit goes back to the 80s and 90s. Imagine if you would have invested instead of 'buying physical media'?
>>109239147So in 20 years when I pop my bluray disc into my bluray reader with zero internet, and it still just werks. How will you cope?
I agree with OP, but I live near the sea and keeping hardware is a pain in the ass.The only viable way for me to keep what I purchase in the long run is to buy a bunch SSDs, store all the data and keep everything locked until I need to access the data.Buying disks is only worth it if I can rip the data from them in a way I can use it later.Thank God for torrent.
>>109239156in 20 years you will be dead unc, not to mention just how bluray will be dead, shit its already dead, in 20 years you will be emulating those games on your pc oh wait you will be dead. Despite your mature age you still seem to be a toddler, why do you even play games you should have a family not be making a shelf of plastic blobs.. how sad is your life really? Imagine now understanding what drm is, wild.
>>109239009Oh I'm buying physical media alright- HDDs and SSDs.You optical media fags are so pathetic clinging to you obsolete and cucked by DRM format. What's next- you gonna tell me to start buying VHS tapes?
>>109239135NTA but because you can just download it to a flash drive for literally the same effect and 1/10th - 1/100th the cost, depending on how badly scalped the physical media you want to buy is. There's literally no difference between data that's on a licensed bluray disk vs data that's on a flash drive. Even in North Korea, they use flash drives to smuggle media around, rather than disks. Or you can even get it for free if you torrent it. Torrents have almost certainly done more to preserve media than disks have. The only exception to this is game consoles, and game consoles are for plebs and are already full of so much DRM they don't work without the internet even with the disk. Old games play better as cracks on PC that, once again, you can download to a flash drive and play whenever you want, even without internet. Or wow, even to your own hard drive! For the same effect and you can play it without internet too!
>>109239156make sure you keep the cables, the tv, and the cords to plug them all in. standards change pretty fast.

>>109239086>console manchild doesn't know of cocepts such as RAID, backups, UPS, surge protection. Many such cases
>>109239189All these things can't change the reality of HDD's and their limited lifespan.$300 for what, 8 years at most of storage.Meanwhile bluray can last for 50 years, no internet, no bullshit, it just werks.
>>109239146interesting idea
>>109239179Fibby bibby my fellow fibber bibber and /thread. Except, one small problem in our argument. Doesn't a Blu-ray hold 100GB+ of data? While yes, obviously we ALL agree that SSDs are physical media, doesn't that take up a lot of space? And yes, obviously storage is cheaper than ever, and everyone pirates from 1337x or private trackers (based!), but all of their files are lower quality than what you'd get on a Blu-ray. So you're getting worse and it's more expensive. But more expensive is based because it's not brown, am I right my fellow physical media chad?

>>109239181The problem is that you have to upload 100 GB of data onto a torrent tracker and seed it so that other people can download it. That's the future you're asking for. Unless you just want to buy digital loicenses, which defeats your argument about DRM.

>>109242790>Most people don’t have that. In fact, most people don’t have a 4chan-compliant PC Master Race Battlestation Rig.Literally anyone with a sizable digital collection is going to have a NAS or PC. IDK how your living situation is that pic related is some kind of burden or big purchase. If you're seriously trying to argue from the normie perspective then you've already lost as even normies don't collect DVDs/BDs it's just Netflix or other streaming services
>>109239039No offense but a bunch of plastic shit garbage taking up shelf space and tying me down being a perpetual burden I have to worry about any time I wanna move, 95% of it which I will never ever play anyway is not something I am interested in. My jailbroken ps3 has every ISO of every game I give a shit about and I play like 4 of them occasionally out of like the 200 I have. Every other game I give a shit about is on PC where I can mod it. If you're an actual collector who enjoys having physical collections ok but that shit is massively overrated and unironically inconvenient compared to just being a pirate. The chance I lose access to my pirated collections because all my storage, backups and online options disappear is less than the discs themselves just dying to disc rot. I abandoned sony in 2013, I never played on xbox, I sold my physical years ago after I digitized it all. I don't even play or care about new games either so the future is not my problem.
>>109242790>your le heckin’ hackerman futuremy what? I don't care if you use discs. I didn't take them from you

>>109239058They could just be relying on this as a financial investment as well. Something similar happened when emulators first started popping up. All the fags collecting cartridges went on this massive crusade about how emulators were the devil, how you were a total piece of shit if you weren't paying 200$ for the failing cartridge, piracy was totally immoral and killing nintendo, how actually the emulator can't match the experience etc etc etc. Turns out most of these fags just had like 100k invested in like battle-toads cartridges and shit and were hoping to just retire on it. Many were game store owners and resellers and a few were just ripping unofficial cartridges and selling them as genuine. The arguments mostly mirrored, to the letter what I'm seeing ITT and it also had very similar levels of seething and crying because they were losing money from people just choosing to emulate that shit instead of paying 1000 bucks for the console + peripherals + 4 niche rare overpriced piece of shit plastic games.
>>109242858>>109242980You are never going to convince billions of people to buy PC Master Race Battlestation Rigs with NAS. This is why physical media (non-SSD) is important. >>109243061Barely anyone collects phyiscal and barely anyone owns a NAS. You're trying to convince NAS owners that instead of just having a NAS, they should dedicate an entire room in their house, or maybe even multiple rooms in their houses to having a bunch of shelves of ugly physical bullshit they're probably not even really going to watch or play. No one is going to switch to this, most NAS owners if not literally every single one had a physical collection at some point and found it cumbersome and a waste of effort and space.

>>109246755Anon, unless you're downloading and hoarding absolute garbage that's worth nothing but the space it occupies on your HDD, it's not useless or pointless. Not even for only personal use.Think like this:The world is going towards cloud computing and thin client computers. A heavily censored and (((curated))) one. Meaning, everything the average NPC will use is cloud based and nothing else. Those that have hoarded content, wether it is knowledge from .pdf's or e-books of other formats, movies, tv-series and other contents will be king. You will see, much of what you then have hoarded over the years won't be available in the official cloud computing world anymore because of cultural marxist rules prohibiting the content.A people that got stripped of their past, are slaves to the future that got created by others. The only way to break this downspiral into zogbot slavery is to make people not forget where they came from and who they are.Look what the chinese under Mao did to their own people. They killed millions, destroyed old traditional villages, buildings, yes entire city districts and temples. Just to make people forget their own past, traditions and religion. The success was only partially and not 100%, but they pretty much fucked up the chink population in a way that is hard to imagine for us here in the west.Do you notice how most (((modern))) buildings are built a way they could be located literally everywhere? California, Tokyo, Berlin, NYC or Madrid. They already do this to us, but the progressive and slow way. So you don't notice or don't feel too offended by this. Seen to how they memoryholed archive.org and stripped its database of the coof years, you can see where it's going at.So keep hoarding movies, tv-series, documentaties, books about history and science, old novels and stories and all stuff that could possibly be memoryholed by (((them))).I'ts never pointless. You and others will profit from it later on.

>dude please hoard expensive pieces of plastic to obtain your license to goyslopno. there's nothing worth saving that costs money
>>109244446Only if you have multiple copies of it and periodically move the media from old to new disks. Also magnetic tape is superior to disks
>>109239009I can burn my own blueray because my shit is DRM-free.
>>109248103You save the money for making custom cases and discsYou save the time involved in doing soYou get a second backup that can be rippedTheres lots of reasons why people buy physical media.
>>109239039>or the ability to pop in a disc in a playeras if they'll sell you a player in the future
>>109249195>as if they'll sell you a player in the futureChina makes them by the crateful, literally millions of units. You can buy a basic bitch 6X bluray/DVD reader and writer for like $40 on aliexpress. If you want to buy the one without bluray capability its like $20.You're sounding almost as delusional as sony. Discs work great. The last for decades for zero cost and are dirt cheap to manufacture. You are never going to convince a population that owning nothing is good.
>>109249220have you stocked up on basic bitch whateverthefucks from aliexpress, yet?i doubt you have...
>>109239009>I dont own any of those storage devices anymore that I hadSkill issue.
>>109239009>Comes to your house and snaps all your discs one by oneProblem chud?
>>109239034If you use Google, Apple, or MS OS's they already check every file on your computer for kiddie porn. They will be checking for pirated files before you know it, too. Before you know it.
there are only three arguments to defend physical media:>you are poor and need the second hand market>you are dumb and can't pirate or doesn't know how to make backups>you are a consumerist collector
>>109250226apple don't check for csam, that's fake news
>>109251081kahn, she's too old, post laura
>>109250431Prove it.
physical might be the only way to buy and own video. i don't know of a Bandcamp or a GOG equivalent.
>>109251500u ok sonny jim?
>>109251500You browns are truly out of gas. Don't you ever feel humiliated when you lie, and get called out to your face?
>>109251541Singular? You mean single, right jeet? They aren't the same word lol.Anyway I fail to see the point because not only have Blu-Ray and DVD DRM been broken wide open, that doesn't interfere with your ability to play the physical discs. As I said a moment ago, it's humiliating for you to behave like you are right now. Izzat -9000
>>109251703Get the fuck out of here idiot, you already lost izzat. You've been trying this for a long time, you always get abused like the brown you are.
I'll make my own physical copies. The only real downside is 0 resale value but let's be real, the types that care about that are usually speculator parasites with no care for the media itself besides potential profit.
>>109239009Just look at all that wasted space. Do vertical piles.
>>109243760That "tremendous growth" is being carried by Taylor Swift, especially with her fans buying 5 copies of the same shitty AI slop album with different artwork.
>>109251959Making money is based, you aren't a parasite for making money.
>>109239009>>b-b-b-but I'll just put it on my NAS or HDDYes. And I will maintain it so failing drives get replaced and backups are kept.
I did that before coronavirus, back when I was finding classic DVD/BR movies for $1-$3. All that's left in this town are normie modernslop movies, i.e. Marvel, Minions, John Wick, Fast Furious. We warned you when Sony released digital only PS5, but you never listen.
>>109251627i wasn't talking about physical, i was talking about legally downloading DRM free video files, the way you can do with music and vidya.
Why does nobody on this damn website understand the 3-2-1 rule? It's always the same thing I hear from people like>>109239086>if your HDD dies, then you lose your data foreverTHAT'S WHY YOU KEEP MULTIPLE BACKUPS. 3 copies, on 2 separate formats, with 1 offsite. How hard is this to understand?
>>109254241It's not the act of making money that's necessarily parasitic, but the intentionality behind it.artificially fucking with the supply/demand for markets that otherwise would be relatively healthy solely for the benefits it affords you is parasitic by definition.
I have a friend who is all in on the physical media mindset. His home is just shelves and shelves of plastic cases and discs that he picks up from Goodwill or Ebay. His collection is definitely in the thousands. Barely watches or plays any of it, probably less than 5% of those discs have ever been used by him. It's very clearly just a compulsion to buy and hoard shit, but I can tell he sees it as some kind of noble quest for preservation. I see a lot of zoomers getting into physical media in a way that is curated specifically for Reddit upvotes. Pick up a horde of plastic shit from a charity bin, put it on a shelf and post it for validation, then never ever use it.The actual sensible thing to do:>Have a small-to-medium highly curated selection of physical media that is of personal significance to you. Stuff you can't live without and will be happy to own in its highest fidelity.>Pirate the rest and keep good quality rips across multiple storage formats.Too many people are just consooming under the guise of "preservation" and other BS. Just be honest with yourself if you like hoarding plastic shit you won't use.
>>109239009any physical media which isn't family photo albums or home movies isn't worth saving.
>>109254657With one of those backups being on disc? Yeah, we know.
>>109239009I'll just put it on my nas and not be a woman about managing it. You physical media fags are so retarded.
>>109255938lol why they don't think of that
I've been ripping shit off Amazon Music to cassette. Type II with Dolby C is as good as CD unless you're in a soundproof cavern miles under the earth.
