I have a 5-bay silverstone CS351 NAS and have, due to recent events, acquired dozens of 2.5" sas drives. I want to make separate RAID5s with separate sets of the drives, for example take 4 drives and make a space for my youtube channels, then be able to take the drives out, store them in a small box, then use another 4 (or 5) drives to make a new RAID5 for all my games. when I want my youtube channels back I would just swap out the sets of drives. will a NAS support that? do the drives have to be inserted in the original sequence every time into the chassis? does it matter what RAID mode I use? google is useless and cant understand what it is Im trying to do.

once you make the RAID the controller is commited to it. if you put all new drives in it, the controller is going to treat it like a new RAID and destroy your old one. you cannot swap them out like that. If Im understanding you right, then you will need to buy separate NASes for every set of drives. doesnt matter what type of RAID. naka, dashi

Jbod and zpool should work. If it has jbod functionality.
