it was the bad actors

>>109252484It's great. Don't listen to anyone here, including me.
>>1092525262lazy to do all that i just select kde as my enviornment and move on
>>109252558I see you haven't checked Debian's site in decades.https://www.debian.org/CD/live/There is a good amount of bloat, including tons of localization and accessibility packages, when installing from one of the desktop "flavor" ISOs.
>>109252484>strip out the packages i dont use/needIf a normal Debian install isn't minimal enough for your use case, you could try a debootstrap install next time. It's kinda like installing Arch or Gentoo.
>>109252484It was because of the drama related to the actual Debian team. They got completely overwhelmed by the far left and anyone right of Stalin has been either pushed out or had their authority knocked down.A lot of the old maintainers have left as a result. So it has caused some problems. That being said, debian is still close to my heart. Engineering and science circles still live and breath it. And for RnD it's still king. But the library issues for compatibility are admittedly rising. I still recommend it, but it's important to keep in mind the full situation.
>>109252526It literally installs tons of bloat
>>109252484install devuan
>>109252526Nah, I do the same thing and install Debian with KDE then remove stuff after, rather than the other way around.
>>109253315>But the library issues for compatibility are admittedly risingElaborate
>>109252484We want you to use unstable meme distros, to maximize the chance of you running into issues, because then you'll likely stop using linux altogether. This is necessary because we had a meeting with our shareholders and they expressed concerns about linux getting popular, even if slowly.
>>109253684I made it up.
>>109252484>why was i told not to use this distro againThe point is that everything is old and tested, it works for playing gaymen, but it's not recommended, you should use a more up to date distro for that, debian is for computers that need a 99% uptime rate in a mission critical scenario.
>>109253749That explains it
>>109253684Hi fren.So for context. I'm a sysadmin for a company that does a lot of in house rnd. I create and maintain environments for the engineers.Moving from debian 12 to 13 has broken a lot of daemons as well as in house tools. From prior years of experience there always bumps moving between major versions, but the 12 to 13 has been the worst so far.I'm obviously not at work so I can't get you a curated list of specific libraries and dependencies, but they are the main thing that have been a pain in the ass.You update one thing, and it breaks compatibility with a hundred other things.Again, not unusual, but it's been the worst I've seen so far. And some of the senior and more veteran admins are also claiming its the worst they've seen.A lot of out in house tools needed to be completely rebuilt, which we've never needed to do prior. Our running theory is that based on the *apparent* turnover of veteran debian maintainers leaving, and that coinciding with quality drops. There seems to be a match up. I'm mostly running off of what I can see from articles or google searches. I don't work with any devs so obviously I can't hard stamp it.I'm just stating from a mix of personal experiences and coinciding timelines. That being said, debian is still the most stable, but we came close to moving off it based on all the headaches it gave us.we didn't because we simply couldn't find anything better. But if quality continues to drop, we'll have to have those discussions again.
>>109252484Congrats on curing your distro hopping. Welcome home.
>>109253798>it works for playing gaymen, but it's not recommendedIt works fine, just follow https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDriversYou can even get the latest gayming drivers on stable. Not many people know this. Just use nvidia's official CUDA toolkit repo for debian stable which has the same drivers you use for gaming. It's even officially linked on the wiki page above.
>>109253315Engineers use RHEL or CentOS or even NixOS doe
Debian is pretty nice since not like you need to be super up to date but it was hell on Nvidia+KDE and *checks notes* still appears to be due to ancient driver. I remember I tried to install a newer driver manually instead of from the repo and the whole process went surprisingly smoothly from installing to building the module and then I tried to launch a 3D app and it always crashed and I could not figure it out so I just moved to Fedora.
>>109252484>distroThrow it into the trash can, unless you cannot afford a computer that supports Windows/MacOS.
>>109252484Same here, games work, nvidia drivers work, cuda works.. I've been keeping a list of installed packages for over 20y so I'm afraid it has gotten pretty big. Then I just install them all again when re-installing and copy over my dotfiles. It's one line in my backup script.apt-mark showmanual > packages.list
>>109254038As a Debian stable user currently using Nvidia+KDE with drivers working flawlessly, this is a supreme skill issue, it's not even hard to set up.
>>109252484Debian is the best distro. If stable is too old you can try testing/sid.>>109252526The Gnome installation at least comes with a ton of games and shit you probably don't need.
I use debian on my laptop, my developer vm, and my server. written close to 50 - 100k lines of code on this OS and the only time it failed was when I crushed my /temp dir with so much crap from stress testing my software that the vm didnt boot any more. fortunately, i just restored it to an older snap shot.
>>109252484Debian is fine especially if you want X11 Gnome/KDE or have niche hardware, but Fedora deprecates it. Debian is better than Ubuntu at least.
Debian 13 didn't come with network drivers for my MSI Z890 motherboard
>>109252484there's always something not working after installing it. it takes just a couple minutes to fix it, but I can't be bothered. Ubuntu and Mint just work (especially Ubuntu).
>>109255950install debian 14 then. i'm on debian 15 and i have drivers for recent (2026) hardware

>>109257324you dont have to use debootstrap. it barely installs anything if you install using the ISO and deselect all packages, similar to Arch or Gentoothere will be packages already downloaded, but not actually installed
>>109257274>>109252484because you need to replace your lack of job with OS tinkering
creator of debian was murdered and then they added systemdlook it up
>>109252484>dont gotta update oftenWhat a stupid thing to say, Linux doesn't force you to do updates.>strip out the packages i dont use/needCool, now you have one more gigabyte of disk space
>>109254532retarded tween
Is there any reason to use MX Linux over Debian? I use systemd anyway so its not like I need to change init systems (yet)
>>109259269Maybe if you use XFCE, their version is really nice like Mint's version. Not super shitty and full of trouble like regular XFCE.
>>109259200didn't he anhero?>>109259269MX has a systemd option, I always keep it in a usb because the MX tools are useful for troubleshooting. The gazelle installer is the best linux installer bar none, I wish it becomes more popularized and used instead of calamares.
>>109259347I would use Xfce if only I could change my monitor's backlight. It only works on Wayland, so I use Plasma with MX.
