How to cast a video from your laptop to your connected display without having to interact with the display or media player:

Windows:
>just right click the MKV file and select "cast to device"
>select which device to cast to
>video is beamed to display and begins playing immediately
>enjoy video!

Linux:
>right click MKV file on your Linux desktop
>become confused because it's 2026 and Linux can't cast video natively
>google around for an hour or two to find out how to cast a video from your desktop to a connected display
>find out that Linux doesn't have native casting
>go back to google to find out that you need to set up a DLNA server from the command-line
>set up DLNA server with command line
>find out that you can't beam video to the display from your desktop on Linux and that because Linux is simply a server OS, you can only pull videos from Linux rather than push them like you can with Windows
>grab the remote for your display and pray that you set up the DLNA server correctly
>find video using display's media player
>after all that time, you finally get to enjoy video on your TV, making sure to remember that since Linux is so limited, you can only pull videos from a Linux PC while Windows can push videos to a connected display as well as behave like a server if needed.

When is Linux going to get the ability to right-click a video and send it to a connected display like Windows does?

No, you can't pretend that pulling videos off a Linux PC is the same thing, freetards.

thats nice but what if i want to disable that functionality entirely?

Yeah, probably. Just need to add a menu entry for it. You can do that with any DLNA server too btw, you lied in the OP.
>>
>>109277644
your Android TV isnt

Also why do you need to right click on a video file in the first place? Dont you have a network share and can browse the file you want on the TV?
Imagine having to run to your PC every time you are done with an episode like a caveman.

Linux cannot do:

Creating shortcuts with one click instead of using links

2nd drive not auto-mounted on boot

Audio driver doesn't automatically change to headphones when plugged in

Printer doesn't work straight out of the box
>>
>>109276563
I used DLNA over 14 years ago with my PlayStation 3.
I stopped doing it about 10 years ago, because i don't use the TV anymore.

>2nd drive not auto-mounted on boot
you know there is a specific fstab setting for this? it's noauto.
>>
>>109277675
yeah, DLNA and basic network shares allow you to simply browse the files on your TV and select what you want.
No right click needed.

Its not the same, it's far superior, far more convenient and it is what everybody does. Even fucking normies have NAS.

Everything on linux is pretty much third party because you roll your own. It breaks down to linux being able to do it forever through "third party" programs. Your argument is the same argument Itoddlers tried to make for it to seem like Apple was better even though they were behind by at least a decade based on features.

"Casting to device" wirelessly will reduce quality and the video will play like shit, also that requires the tv to be on the local network (and most people don't even set it up properly and allow their tvs to send a ton of personal data straight to nsa).
>>
my buddy on windows 10 uses an HDMI switcher to switch between his TV and his monitor when he wants to watch anime

True. Its a MAJOR flaw with linux imo. I have to RDP from my windows into my linux to cast to tv and roku. For quality, i use a raspi i converted to remotely toggle to be a wireless USB. From my phone i run a script that copies the movies or shows I want to the raspi then it toggles to otg usb mode and acts like plugging a flash drive with videos into the tv. Takes forever. But its better quality than even cable tv. Even direct streams from the best LAN systems is going to be poor quality, good enough for like youtube or whatever but big screen movies you need to direct link it.
