More important than an EQ is a properly-designed loudness control, which progressively boosts bass at lower volume levels.

DSP is good for more than just room correction, which is beneficial in basically all rooms and used by professionals for the best sounding stereos. That's just a fact.
Really good setups use DSP for everything, including the active crossover for the speakers.
Good luck getting multiple subwoofers or a double bass array configured properly without DSP (and thus EQ)

i just use `af add bass` in mpv.
well not exactly. i do `af add asf2sf=dblp` first to turn input samples to double-precision floats to avoid clipping (librempeg-only, don't know if ffmpeg has a simple equivalent). and then with the bass filter itself i do use the c (channels) and f (frequency) parameters, those are usually fixed. and finally, the g parameter is the one to tune to do what you describe.
this wipes the floor with any analog "EQ" you could think of.
