Tired of the hivemind? Here’s your prescribed sanity dose:

>Crinacle is not your priest.
Rankings are a guide, not divine scripture. Your ears > his spreadsheet.

>Harman and JM-1 ≠ perfect.
It’s a preference curve, not a law of physics. Some genres need deviation.

>Chi-Fi isn’t magic.
Great value, yes. Immune to QC issues and hype cycles? Nope.

>Graphs are not sound.
They don’t show staging, dynamics, or fit. Use your ears, not just squigs.

>BA ≠ metallic, DD ≠ perfect.
Implementation matters more than driver type. Always has.

>Meme sets aren’t the whole hobby.
If it’s not shilled 24/7, it might still be good. It's highly encouraged to form an original opinion.

>Disagreeing ≠ cope or deaf.
Let people like what they like without foaming at the mouth.

>Loud posts =/= smart takes.
Confidence without experience is just noise. Show graphs, impressions, or both.

Bought OnePlus Buds Pro 3 and they sound great out of the box, even better with an EQ, but they come with bonkers 300-400ms latency on my phone. Tried Earfun Air Pro 4+ which supposedly sound pretty good but I personally didn't enjoy the tuning out of the box. They sound better after an EQ but I still don't really like them, plus the frequency response changes when you enable ANC like my WF1000XM4s did which is annoying. Also tried Liberty 4 NC and they do sound a little better than the Earfuns but still not as good as the OnePlus Buds Pro 3 and the transparency mode sucks.

What do I buy now? All I care about is audio quality, ANC/transparency and battery life. I'm eyeballing Oppo/Realme earbuds but there's a million different models and I'll have to deal with AliExpress returns if I don't like something.

Since you're posting for the third time I'll bite. The natural upgrade path is probably Galaxy Buds4 Pro or latest Sony ones. Or Apple ones if you want to change your whole lifestyle and become an iToddler. Tho the Samsung also requires and ecosystem shift for best performance if you weren't already using a Samsung phone. Sony is the most compatible

Hello audio nerds, I come bearing a question.
I want to buy something like the Sennhieser HD 600 headphones (not sold on that specific model but you get the idea). From what I've been reading I need something that can drive 300 ohms comfortably.
Now the issue is, I already own a Scarlett Solo 4th gen because I run my guitar and mic through it, but quick research indicates it won't be powerful enough to directly run the headphones. That's fine. I'll buy an amp.

Now, how the hell do I chain the Scarlett and the amp (Atom Amp+, FiiO K7, etc.) together so I can still monitor my guitar through the headphones, but have the amp power the phones? Scarlett has Line Out, amps have Line In. So, 1/4" Mono to RCA, then connect the headphones to the amp input?

I just want to avoid spending $1000 and finding out I can't monitor my instrument while it's powered by the amp.
>>
>>109306133

>>
>>109306133
You don't need that much power. You could literally run it off a $5 dongle if you wanted to.

I don't remember asking. There's enough conflicting information on joogle that I'd rather just buy the amp. I'm not poor, I'll just buy the thing and not have to second guess it.
>Also get 650 instead of 600
Not set in any particular monitors, but I'll keep this in mind, thanks.

Let me rephrase.
I don't care about some cheapshit inline aliexpress special for $5. I listed desktop amps in the $200+ range and that's what I intend to buy, if anything.
You're telling me I don't need that much power then that's fine, but I'd rather just buy something capable now in case I ever get even more demanding headphones.
And that's IF this combination even works, which is what I really wanted an answer for.
>>
>>109306256
You just don't buy headpos. Ever.
>>
>>109306256
just get the q5k or trn black pearl or any tanchjim dongle
if you want a desktop stack, go ahead. just know they are inconvenient and provide no benefit over cheaper and more portable dongles
>>
>>109306256
They work fine even from MacBook air socket. U can use pretty much random dongle to power them fine. More powerful dongles will be more than enough. I wouldn't spend more than 100usd on amp for them unless... Unless u are planning going balls deep into audio hobby and buy more headphones, IEMs.

Airpods pro has unbeatable ANC/transparency if that matters most to you, with good enough sound. However if you use it at the gym or while running, it'll die in maximum 2 years. Normal airpods will crackle within a few months in the same scenario, avoid those.

hd650 is nice as a palate cleanser but is too low test for me. i need physicality scale and good slam
>>
>>109306256
hd600 has not been considered a demanding headphone for like 10 years. It's the low impedance low sensitivity planars that need amps now. High impedance is a safeguard against current clipping, the worst thing that could possibly happen with them is them not playing loud enough.

>>109306324
From what I read, MacBooks have excellent DACs on their 1/8" socket and are the exception, not the rule. Too many people online saying these Scarletts are not great for driving headphones above 200 ohms.
>>109306357
>the worst thing that could possibly happen with them is them not playing loud enough
Which is what I'm reading basically everywhere. I really just wanted to know if I could chain shit together and it all work before buying anything, but it looks as if I'm not going to get an answer here. Oh well.
>>
>>109306403

>>
>>109306403
Just buy newest desktop thing from chinks brands like fiio or toping. I think r2r will be too dark for hd650 so I would avoid them. For dongles probably even jcally will be enough but if u willing to pay more choose more powerful dongles, don't know meta, maybe crinear protocol max
>>
>>109306448
>>109306272
So I just get a 6.35mm to USB-C TRS cable to connect a dongle then plug the phones into the 3.5mm Out? That'll just werk(tm)?
If they're so cheap I guess I can just keep that for the IEMs if I ever get a desktop stack to replace it.

Looking for a PMP player that ticks the following boxes please:
> Can play from folder (all my playlists are organised by folder)
> Has a search function
> Can queue songs
> Preferably no WiFi or Android/Apple OS

I've been getting by with the Sony NW-A55 but not being able to search and queue songs is getting to me and I don't want to go back to a smart phone.

Is it normal (or used to be in older pos) that there is asymmetry between L and R nozzles? I autistically compared several reviews and it seems to be the case with this specific set, random placement of exits. To my ear it sounds balanced in sweeps, but it's the first time I see it after going through 15+ pos. I don't have measurement rig.

U can buy android DAP and use it without wifi or any online interactions. There u have more choice and for example Poweramp works fine with folders library, I use it that way. In general Android players have more mature UI and they are not that much more expensive
Cheaper will be something with hiby os like hiby r1 or r3 but I don't think they are that good with larger folders libraries

Bringing up mixes in techs discussions is setting yourself up to fail when you get to the soundstage discussion. IEM comfort > whatever you consider "sound quality", correct. But lets take a look at the comfort of kilobuck IEMs...
>>
>>109312810
obviously comfort in my analogy is literally everything else that cant be clearly measured. iem size can though so it makes sense you bring it up. and you're right that more expensive iems are generally heavier. this doesn't mean much for my claim though, i never said there weren't exceptions (like with your worlds biggest iem there) or that the relationship between price and quality was smooth or linear

You take things that are FR in a trenchcoat and say they can't be clearly measured. You don't understand how they are FR so you assume it's debatable. Some of the things you said aren't FR were known to be FR before audio recordings even existed.
>>
>>109313005
low thd establishes low thd, it doesn't establish that it exhausts sound quality or that price is inversely correlated with quality. you never explicitly said that but its reasonably implied imo. basically its compression, where only the most concrete and legible properties are valid and everything else is nulled

>>109313350
Diminishing returns is the same type of delusion as singularity. Nothing in real life works like that. There's simply a product that is "the best" and everything above and below it is worse. A New York pizza made with the most expensive ingredients will not be better than a $5 pizza from Naples, if we're going by food analogies.
>>
>>109313331
of course not. my claim is just that there seems to be some correlation between price and quality. i could even qualify it and say it's weak and noisy, but there. many expensive products can be insultingly shitty, and the value of some very cheap stuff extreme. which can justify keeping only cheap stuff even if you acknowledge price and quality are somewhat related, but that isn't your position. no, you insist on insisting- it has to be on average worse if you pay more. that is a extremely strong claim
>>
>>109313492
>my claim is just that there seems to be some correlation between price and quality
your claim is wrong there is none
>if you acknowledge price and quality are somewhat related
there's no need to acknowledge that as it was proven to not be the case
>it has to be on average worse if you pay more. that is a extremely strong claim
that would also be a correlation between price and quality and there is none
>>
>>109313492
>average
My claim is much stronger. I say that every single expensive IEM is worse $20 pos. You can only hide behind exceptions for so long. Name 1 exception that is better, not worse than average. Then we can talk about averages.

easily falsifiable. your problem is that you're saying it as if it's already proven. the onus is on you to demonstrate that every non FR mechanism is either inaudible or manifests only through FR.
I've never been convinced FR alone captures everything we perceive as technicalities, that's the real disagreement here.
a speaker's FR only shows coloration and any deviation beyond neutral affects the intended audio mix, negatively or not.

>I've never been convinced FR alone captures everything we perceive as technicalities, that's the real disagreement here.
because you lack the theoretical foundation as to why FR is the only property that matters. you would do well to learn about mechanical vibrations and control systems before trying to argue against well established facts.
whether this property's tendency to agree well with your anatomy is a different story.

in the context of iems and their acoustical output, yes.
we have already discussed other points about iems that might influence perception such as isolation, comfort, build quality

the point of what others are arguing is that there is no distinction between an expensive and cheap iem. you can theoretically eq one into the other if needed. whether or not this is needed is highly debatable: why would something more expensive even sound better?
the answer is FR colorations which are achievable with EQ.

>sound is just vibration of your eardrums, that vibration is literaly a sum of sine waves,
Sine waves are only an approximation to anything, the limit of a repeating process over an infinite domain. They do not actually exist.
If this sounds like splitting hairs, the DFT takes a finite window of a signal in time and extrapolates that time sequence into a set of frequency bins.
>if you FFT it, you get a FR graph, and if you do the inverse transform you get back the exact same sum of sine wave.
When I learned about frequency response, we used the Fourier Transform. The loss of phase information makes it not a frequency response. You could call it a bunch of other things depending on context: the modulus, the magnitude response, the sensitivity. But it isn't FR.
That the system is assumed minimum-phase, or close enough not to deviate in any meaningful way, means you can reconstruct the phase from the magnitude and thus the FR.
I'm not against the idea of joint-time frequency charts, e.g. STFT, CSDs, wavelets, and such. Non-minimum phase behavior can be deceptively small and lost in the summation/integral. But this isn't a black box either, and you should ask yourself what sort of behavior and delayed sound you can expect from such a small acoustic structure.
>the FR is just a literal mirror of the soudwave you can convert it back and forth and that's why EQ's work in the first place if that wasn't the case, an EQ with no bands would delete information, and they don't.
That's a property of linearity. Linear systems are simple to invert.
Assuming that factors such as noise and quantization error aren't relevant, of course.

most i've personally seen is a tiny rise in low frequency
>>
>>109316825
>They do not actually exist
that's false, and even if it wasn't to the precision at which we are talking about the difference would be meaningless, you don't need a lot of digits of pi to get within an atom of error of the observable universe when calculating its radius.
>The loss of phase information makes it not a frequency response
also false if you don't take too many sample at once, most EQ do it one sample at a time, if you do so, with no bands you get back the exact same shape than the one that was put it.
add one band and the same holds true except you got a peak at the spots that'd correspond to the frequency you boosted.
also there are more than one EQ algorithm, you can use IIR which is very cheap and fast, you can also use FIR which can be used to have a linear phase response, meaning you do not loose phase information, but guess what, for iems most people cannot tell the difference at all, because minimum phase.

you could have an argument for using FIR instead of IIR for speakers though.
>Non-minimum phase behavior can be deceptively small and lost in the summation/integral
not only is it false depending of your algo, even if that wasn't the difference would be too small for your ear to pick up, let alone the brain to notice if the ear somehow wasn't too lossy.

>That's a property of linearity. Linear systems are simple to invert.
so you basicaly admit that your whole "muh phase" argument is nonsense.
>Assuming that factors such as noise and quantization error aren't relevant
they aren't for iems.
and if you use f64 the amount of errors would be too small to be meaningful, we are talking about a grain of sand in a whole galaxy type of error, 64 bit is fucking huge.
and anyway most people have 32bit audio at most, even if you got some quant floating point error sheenanigans, it'd not even affect the final result when you are back to 32bit.
>>
>>109316825
>>109317027
and anyway even if you somehow got a whole 1 / 2^32 of error (which would never happen), that'd literaly be imperceptible, most human wouldn't even notice loosing 80% of the bit depth on 32bit, let alone a single digit deviation.

>>109316825
The phase is not lost, it's in the txt file of the measurement. Most IEMs ARE minimum phase,. Human ear doesn't hear phase within one channel, which is why nobody bothers displaying phase.
>>
>>109317298
>minimum phase
you have absolutely no clue what that even means
>>
>>109317027
>even if it wasn't to the precision at which we are talking about the difference would be meaningless
I'm talking about the DFT itself being periodic in both time and frequency domains. The Fourier transform integral doesn't actually do either, even though you multiply the function by a complex exponential. Sinusoids are mapped right into delta functions under the FT.
>false if you don't take too many sample at once
That has nothing to do with what I just said. It's part of the expression of a general complex exponential.
>they aren't for iems.
Noise is hideously relevant for IEMs. That's usually a gain-ranging problem and a problem for those using old analog EQs.
Realistically, the MSBs never come up for in-ear listening because of gain-ranging problems, although 32-bits is still plenty.
>even if that wasn't the difference would be too small for your ear to pick up
I'm just going to leave this here. Another copy should be in the paper archive.

>it's in the txt file of the measurement.
The graph is not the measurement.
>Most IEMs ARE minimum phase
There are enough IEMs with functional crossovers, inducing partial allpass rotations, to say no. But you'd be hard-pressed to show it matters for the listening experience.
>Human ear doesn't hear phase within one channel
You can take it to absurdity and demonstrate that this is wrong in the absolute. Scale matters.
>>
>>109317437
>Fourier transform
irrelevant as EQ's don't actualy use a fourrier transform but i told him to look at them because they give a good first intuition of what is actualy happening, FIR preserves phase information and that's why it needs to have previous samples to be able to work, you generally use 500 to 4000 previous samples in order to preserve phase information, the more taps you have the better the preservation, 512 is generally considered good enough for EQ's, but again, practicaly no one can ear the difference with iems because minimum phase, if you use iems you may as well go with IIR which is a LOT faster, even though it doesn't preserve phase information.
>That has nothing to do with what I just said. It's part of the expression of a general complex exponential.
and again, irrelevant because EQ don't actualy use fourier transforms, it was mostly to give him a good first intuition into signal processing as FFT is pretty neat.
>I'm just going to leave this here
i'm not reading all that, timbre is in the FR anyway.
>The graph is not the measurement.
