Reminder that you should not be telling upset Windows users to switch to Linux. Upset Windows users are tech illiterate retards that require an OS that babysits them 24/7. It's in everyone's interest to keep encouraging tech illiterate retards to switch to Apple's walled garden and pay a premium for their own stupidity. Gatekeep them away from x86. Fuck them.

How easy is it to install Bazzite from Mint or any other Distros?
>>
My games started running terribly on steam seemingly out of nowhere via proton. I tried the latest proton version 11-1, reverted back to 10-34, tried the experimental version, and they all run terribly. Notably any real time game such as terraria both loads slow and runs in slow motion. I've tried verifying the files for my games and updating everything and nothing seems to be helping. Has any other anon ran into this kind of issue before?

Mint is the ol' reliable, on the merit of not updating as often.
Linux is not safer from viruses, and the more people migrate to Linux the more it'll be targeted by viruses, just don't be a retard and don't blindly install shit or run commands, same as with Windows.
Depending on what hardware you run, you might have to deal with extra initial setup. For example VRR/HDR monitors, Mint is still on X11 that works, but is behind on the modern display technologies, but if you don't care about it you don't need to worry about it. It comes with a dedicated Nvidia driver installer, and those are another novel issue of Linux, so that shouldn't be a huge issue either.

Mint is one of the best "just works" distros, I was able to set up gaming on it without touching the terminal. Ideally, find a spare drive, install it on that, then just boot into it from UEFI instead of dual booting on a single drive or wiping your Windows partition. Get accustomed to this completely different OS in a way where you can go back to what you were using before easily. By using a secondary drive you skip a ton of problems Windows/Linux dual booting has, like accidentally destroying your partitions or Windows overwriting the boot partition on an update.

What do guys on linux use to check if what they download is legit? I pirate a lot and on windows I would just run malwarebytes on the download folder followed by virustotal to check the executable.

Mint is pretty easy and the best one to use if you're just going to use your computer for general use and you aren't going to do anything cutting edge.
>>What am I in for?
A lot of cool shit, a lot of frustration, a lot of learning, it's got its highs and lows, if its not fun its at least engaging.
>>What's the worst part?
Troubleshooting something you don't understand, first you'll feel like an idiot and you'll do it all the time and sometimes it works and fixes your problem, other times it doesn't. But overtime these hurdles will become really easy for you to overcome and you'll move on to more advanced problems to then continue frustrating you. It happens slowly though, you won't really know how far you've come until you pause to look back and realize you learned all this shit without even realizing it.
>What's the best part?
Besides the learning I mentioned above, you have total control of your machine. You can absolutely customize anything and everything, don't like a program that came with the OS? Just swap it out. Don't like the DE on Mint? Swap it. Want your computer to boot and play a whole fucking movie or music video as a start up? You can do that. Want to make your own icons or replace them? Yup, you can do that.
Like I said, completely control.

>is it safer from viruses?
Kinda, not for long because the market share of Linux is grown from 1 to around 2 or 3% there have been a lot of pipeline attacks and it seems that maybe within 10 years we'll have the same virus problem.
>Does it constantly break things?
The update or the programs? Things sometimes break on updates but those are actually the easier ones to fix because in Linux you can rollback updates live without resetting anything but the program. I wouldn't worry about it too much on Mint, things rarely break unless you tinker with them.
>How much time am I going to have to spend trying to look for fixes?
a lot when you're new, not so much later on. You'll probably spend most of your time troubleshooting how to play certain games if you don't want to go through steam because you're missing a pacakge or something.

>Is it safer from viruses?
No, absolutely not. Aside from executables/scripts not being runnable by default when you download them, Linux has pretty much no protection mechanisms from malware. There's no equivalent to Windows Defender which is your omnipresent babysitter. If you run something malicious, Linux assumes you're doing it on purpose instead of assuming you're retarded, so you're instantly fucked. As a desktop Linux constantly ranks below Windows and Mac when it comes to security. You need to really go out of your way to use something obscure like Secureblue to get at least somewhat close to the security of Windows and Mac.

Hey anon sorry for the late reply but here you go, just follow my instructions:
https://desuarchive.org/g/thread/108303392/#108309892

The gtk3 filepicker seems to be a really common problem, and most people give really unhelpful solutions like "just use KDE bro" or "just switch your DE/distro bro".
gtk4 has thumbnails in the filepicker, but gtk4 is a hot garbage and wouldn't recommend it unless you're specifically running gnome.
I think the next time someone makes a thread they should put a solution to this problem in the OP since it's really common. I'll probably do that when I get the chance.

>>109310461
No system tray/notification area

Too much memory usage for what it does
GTK4 themes are incompatible with GTK3 (most themes you will find are for GTK3/GTK2, very few are also for GTK4)
>inb4 you can fix all this with extensions!
Unless you're running a stable distro like Debian, then enjoy having your extensions break with every update. Also extensions can't fix the theming issues.

Have you updated your graphics drivers or kernel recently? if you have intel+nvidia hybrid graphics check that it's actually working
First run nvidia-smi to check that the GPU driver is recognized
Next test with glxgears:
# Run glxgears with integrated graphics, it should print 'GL_VENDOR = Intel' in the terminal
glxgears -info | grep -i vendor
# Run glxgears with discrete graphics, it should print 'GL_VENDOR = NVIDIA Corporation' in the terminal
__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia glxgears -info | grep -i vendor

Next check if the game is actually using your GPU, use nvidia-smi or nvtop to monitor the GPU usage
Don't know what you have to do if you have AMD but there should be similar tools to monitor the GPU
Also check CPU usage, there might be some bottlenecks

Every single time I decide to give gentoo a try I give up along the way because I do it from within a VM. Due to the limited amount of resources allocated even compiling of simple packages takes way too long. Portage also feel sluggish to use. I should just bite the bullet and test it on bare metal instead of doing this every time. With that said I should learn how to use portage first. Are these sync methods doing the same thing for example?
>>
>>109311991
Do it while you're chrooted from a live GUI environment, or even from your main distro.
The steps to do this are roughly as follows:
1. Make sure you have a spare partition to install Gentoo on
2. Mount the partition to /mnt/gentoo from any distro of your choice or even a live environment
3. Unpack the gentoo tarball there
4. Mount the EFI System Partition (usually /dev/sda1) on /mnt/gentoo/efi
5. Follow the rest of the gentoo guide
Congrats, now you can compile shit from a chroot while shitposting
>>
>>109311991
>Due to the limited amount of resources allocated even compiling of simple packages takes way too long.
uhhh why don't you allocate more? What's your CPU?
>>109312104
>even from your main distro
NTA but did exactly that while distrohopping. Had two small system partitions and one big partition for $HOME and stuff so there was always one vacant partition to install a new system to. Having a "stage3" or any sort of root filesystem tarball was the shit. Like for example installing Fedora is much easier when you can simply extract the tarball instead of trying to mess with Fedora's package manager from a non-RPM distro.

I worded what I said poorly and made it sound like I already have the hardware with me. I am planning the next OS for my new desktop build. I am documenting the installation process and what to do in order to minimize the time wasted. I tested this on a macbook. It has 14 cores but I might have made a mistake using only 6 cores and 4gb of ram. Not to mention the emulation overhead coming from an arm64 chip. I did set binary only installation but there are libraries that only come as source code and there are times the USE flags conflict with the binaries already available so I end up having to compile at least 20-30% of the total packages

Where more normgroid presence empowers commercialisation and government involvement it's vital.

>Kubuntu and Xubuntu existed thoughever.
That's irrelevant. "Ubuntu" is THE marketing term and THE thing people look for. Kubuntu and Xubuntu are entirely separate projects that are barely visible in a somewhat difficult to find sub-section of the Ubuntu website. It's not like Fedora which at least tells you "pick between Workstation, KDE or see these other editions". Ubuntu LTS is 5x more popular than the non-LTS version for the same reason, it's the first download the user is directed to.
The user flow for most people who are switching to Linux is: learn about linux > everyone is talking about ubuntu (at least back then) > go to the ubuntu website > click the big download button > download the iso and follow instructions. The concept of a desktop environment is something people learn about after the fact, similar to how people learn that there isn't just "Android" and there's over a dozen different skins and OEM ROMs to it.

Installing any Deb-based distro is done with Debootstrap. The following command would bootstrap Debian Trixie into $TARGET using their standard mirror
debootstrap trixie $TARGET http://ftp.debian.org/debian

Or any RPM-based distro:
dnf --installroot $TARGET ...

Can't remember the entire command.
Or if the distribution happens to provide a root filesystem tarball, use that instead.

Guys, Im really trying to use Linux (Ok, calm down, this is not a Nvida, Adobe or Gaming related problem), so I bought a second SSD and Installed Fedora 44 KDE.
As a programer I had no problem using it and installing what I needed and so on, but, one thing for me is a huge deal breaker, and idk if its a Fedora problem, it stutters randomly, and sometimes not so randomly, which pisses me off so much, I dont care if Dolphin takes a second to open, but freezing my cursor, damn, thats fucked up, really doesn't feel like I'm using a powerfull PC (R55600, 16gb ram, RX6600, sure, not "GAMING" crazy but man, it can absolutelly run a DE for God sake), also, not gaming related (because the few games I tested ran "fine") but downloading anything on steam causes a full system lockup for like 15 seconds sometimes, can anybody help me ? Should I install another distro ?

>laptop or a keyboard
>car or a driver's seat

>>109315149
Have btop running on a 2nd monitor and take a look at your resource usage during the times when your PC "locks up". It could literally be anything.
>memory running out (in which case increase the size of your swap file and slightly increase threshold when your OOM manager kills or swaps processes)
>internal storage issue (this would normally only happen if running an OS off a USB drive or a slower HDD, or if your SSD is failing)
>high temperatures (least likely, but the CPU can fully stop itself if you reach 100C+)
I would also check all the possible logs your system makes. I don't have a list with me right now, but Linux has a handful of places where useful logs are kept.
>Should I install another distro
This sounds more like a hardware issue if anything, so a new distro won't help aside from maybe temporarily masking the issue. Unless it really is the lack of memory in which case it's faster to just fix it on Fedora rather than moving to a different distro and hoping it has better memory management defaults.

Well that's potentially the problem. Most SSDs sold on Ali are total dogshit and completely unreliable. The one you're using on your Windows machine is the outlier. Most SSDs from Ali start failing within a year of use. Legitimate businesses with decent products are a tiny minority on Aliexpress.

If you want to be really fancy or if you really break shit, you can get a Linux live USB, boot it and mount the drive that your installed Linux root partition is on, and use chroot in a terminal to switch to running commands as your installed Linux system
>>
>>109316425
I saw that as an option too but the way I went looked less painless.
What is the deal with mounting anyways? Why would you need to mount it to work on it from another system?
>>
>>109316458
You need to mount a disk to read the filesystem on it, chroot is switching what the terminal session thinks is the root directory to wherever you're setting the target, so then if you run sudo apt update it runs the version that's on the selected root filesystem, not the one your liveUSB uses. It's like if you could arbitrarily tell Windows that the C:\ root directory is actually Z:\Windows Portable Cracked Legit Not Dolphin Porn\C:\ and then it would start running commands and programs in that session from that directory instead of the real C:\ drive.

As far as I'm aware Wayland doesn't support this. You'd have to use the X11 version of KDE Plasma, which is only going to be supported for a few more months as far as I know. Go to the KDE bug tracker and complain about it I guess.

Why does Dolphin cause high CPU usage when opening a folder with a lot of videos sorted by duration? I used to have this problem but it eventually went away and now it's back.

If I sort a lot of videos by duration and have that window open it has a constant 10% CPU load even if I'm not scrolling (that causes even more load), so why is this happening? It did go away at some point and I wasn't getting this CPU load when opening a folder with a lot of files (same amount). On Windows I never had this problem with Everything sorting videos on ALL drives by duration, it took a bit of time to process just like on Linux but after it was sorted it had no excess CPU usage.

Why does Dolphin put a huge load on the CPU just to display a folder with videos sorted by duration?

They've already had their thumbnails generated if that's what you mean. Just having a folder with more than 500 videos sorted by video duration puts a strain on the CPU. If it's like 2000 or so I'm getting 10% load just by having it open.

It's actually funny I was going to ask about this a few months ago but when I sorted all videos on a drive by duration I didn't get load on the CPU so I didn't post anything. Just to clarify, it's the same videos, nothing has changed in the folder.

There's basically nothing else out there if you want something that both supports modern hardware and also has a familiar Windows look and feel with a traditional taskbar and system tray, etc.

It's not either / or. You're assuming that time spent working on features is time not spent fixing bugs but that's not the case at all.

>>

Install Debian. It is much higher quality. If you do not like systemd, Debian supports a bunch of alternate init systems that you can switch to.
>>
>>109320710
>but isnt that how software works on windows?
It's how software works on every single OS out there and even on Linux too. Electron apps don't share their Chromium runtimes, video games don't share game engine runtimes and dependencies, websites don't share libraries between each other, and a lot of software bakes dependencies into it's own binaries. Appimage/Flatpak is almost exactly how software should be distributed as on Linux.
>with the rest of the system making them use more ram
Technically correct, but realistically irrelevant. A Flatpak app only uses 4-20 extra MB of memory. It would only become a problem if you're trying to multitask with 50+ apps open at once.

>so people just bitch about them because they are idiots?
Correct. They're doing the good old "old thing good, new thing bad", despite the fact that the "new thing" is one of the sole reasons why Linux got more popular in the past decade. Even Linus Torvalds himself once mentioned that the traditional way of delivering packages is one of the biggest reasons why Linux is failing to capture an audience as a desktop OS.

I unironically wouldn't use Linux (or would be totally miserable on it) if Flatpak or at least Appimage didn't exist.
>>
>>109320894
AppImage is nice and simple. Flatpak is a bad design, though - theme consistency issues, GUI apps only, bad for things like IDEs that need a high level of system integration, overly broad permissions on untrusted apps. But Linux is fine without Flatpak if your distro is popular enough and provides a good native repo.
>>
>>109320438
There are terminals that have thumbnail support, there are now terminals that can render 3d images as well.
>>
>>109320930
The only real issue here is system integration, which is possible but only if the app is built around the fact it'll be run in a Flatpak container.
>theming
Seems like a solved issue from my experience.
>overly broad permissions
Non-issue since native packages and appimages already have ALL permissions anyway.
>GUI apps only
Another non-issue since people generally primarily or exclusively care about GUI apps.
We already have brew for CLI apps, and it's not like you'd get an Appimage to run a CLI app. You're probably just getting the binary, .sh file or a py/js file, or you're spinning up a docker or distrobox container.

>AppImage is nice and simple.
True, I like it. The main problem I have with Appimage is the lack of a real software center and update manager for it, and the fact that fuse2 is abandonware yet many Appimages require it.

Yes, heavily which is ironically what makes it very solid. There's also leaked email of the MS Devs talking to the MS-Fedora devs about making a legit corporate distro of Linux for Windows.
>>
>>109328292
They said the same thing about WSL and Azure is even less relevant for desktop users than that. EEE hasn't worked in decades at this point. Seems like the only things that really kill technology these days are jeetification and harebrained monetization schemes.
>>
>>109328388
WSL was an attempt to court linux users back and to honestly make translation between DBs on Linux or Servers running Linux easier to set-up for Windows if you were on the Linux side of the equation but now its pretty useless outside of everything but early day AI, but now thats even got pretty good support on Windows now.

Hello, please look very carefully at the icons in Nemo, do they have shadows? if yes then there's your problem, I was theming GTK3 and discovered that icon shadows are laggy as hell in file managers.
To confirm this, do the following:
run
GTK_DEBUG=interactive nemo

This should open Nemo along with GTK Inspector, go to the CSS tab in GTK Inspector and add the following CSS
* {
-gtk-icon-shadow: none;
}

This should get rid of the icon shadows, now try browsing with Nemo and see if there's any difference, if there is then you found your problem, and it's caused by your GTK theme.
>>
>>109328955
Make sure you don't install the new 32-bit update that is inevitably pushed by a hacker to install keyloggers onto your system cause Debian decided that system32 was no longer "universal" enough.

Setup zram swap with systemd-zram-generator (or just zram-generator on Arch) for much better swap performance.
Also install the tool earlyoom so if a program starts to memory leak or something then it'll be hibernated or killed.

how many installation isos does one distro need?
>>
>>109329224
Distros that are targeting multiple groups of users will always have a ton of isos because each is specialized for a different niche out of the box. Otherwise you'd have a couple of 20GB+ isos and you'd force everyone to download the entire thing even though they don't even need half of it. Or you'd have a single minimal iso like Arch does, which most people wouldn't want to set up manually.

I respectfully disagree in a friendly gnu/linux manner regarding that Linux Mint is the Linux equivalent to Windows 7.
Perhaps you mean that the interface is very similar and familiar to anyone who used Windows OSes before Windows 8. That is true, and I would go so far as to say the XFCE edition of Linux Mint (with Chicago95 theme lmao) is the best edition. But the technology in Linux Mint is top notch and up to date.

WARNING, POST COMES WITH STORY TIME
Why is gentoo so good? I used it like 20 years ago and it was okay, but really it was more trouble than it was worth even on the dual Xeon 5160 pedestal server that was my desktop at the time. (Each cpu had 2c, 2t, 3.0GHz, 1333MHz FSB, 80W TDP, 4x4GB ECC DDR2 667MHz RAM, 1.5GB GDDR3 Quadro FX 5600 GPU)

Stuff compiled plenty fast for the time, I mean my machine was a fucking powerhouse that I picked up at a government auction of stuff seized from some company that did something illegal, dunno what, and it was mislabeled as NO CPU so I decided if I could get it for a decent enough price all I needed to do was pick up some HDDs (they remove all HDDs when they auction off stuff like that) and track down a pair of LGA771 CPUs, and I'd be set. No one else bid on it, so I got it for the reserve if $80 +govt fee so about $95 all told. I get it home, crack it open, and both CPUs are there! Turns out they meant no PSU. I happened to have one from another server that was nearing death anyway, so I pulled its PSU and HDDs (and even a VERY early 32GB SSD) and set up the server. It fired right up, and didn't even have a BIOS password! I went with gentoo because I figured with that kind of raw power, it had to turn compiling packages into a trivial thing in terms of time. And it did. But gentoo just didn't "do it" for me. I used it for about 2 months before I got tired of it and switched to Arch and that's what it ran for the servers lifetime until 2018 when it finally went no POST, no boot. RIP in Peace.

About a week ago I was bored and decided to install gentoo on the second NVMe SSD in my LG Gram 17 ultrabook (i7 1065G7 4c 8t 3.9GHz 15W TDP, 16GB 3200MHz DDR4, shit igpu) and the results are.. strange. I'm happier than I've ever been with any distro. Programs open so fast that it feels like things happen BEFORE I press enter. I am in love with gentoo. But I can't quantify what makes it so amazing. It just FEELS better then anything else.
>>

No it isn't.
The desktop environments Mint offers are years behind KDE and GNOME. You know, the two most popular DEs that are used by at least 80% of Linux users.
The (((native))) packages Mint offers are, on average, at least a year behind Arch and at least 9 months behind Fedora. And that's just the average. The longer you get into the release cycle of your version of Mint the older they get and at some point you'll be 2 years behind every Arch/Fedora user.

This socket is configured in ~./.gnupg/gpg.conf and it may be that kleopatra added or altered the line.
