I tried for 6 months and had a semi-stable system, but I'm not a programmer and it's really geared towards programmers. I was just copy/pasting other people's shit or using AI to build my system and when something broke it was a multi-day nightmare. NixOS is awesome but it's not for me and wasn't sustainable without heavy knowledge that's outside of my expertise.

>>109308774
For a single server, sure, go full hog. If you have more, IMO it's better to deploy some cluster orchestrator (nomad, kube, what have you) for your services. You can keep NixOS underneath, you can build your images with Nix (docker-tools, nix2container), even template your workloads with Nix (nix-nomad, kubenix), but Nix can't give you auto scaling, migration, etc on its own. I basically do this with Nomad and works rather well for me.

Since a while there's this thing called clan.lol that attempts to make handling multiple interrelated servers more ergonomic, but I haven't tried it personally. It won't give you auto scaling or node migration for free, like an orchestrator, though.

I love projects like nix and guix, but I just want my shit to work. Unironically I'm thinking about switching to Ubuntu. I love Debian and Arch, but I've noticed that most shit is straight up meant for Ubuntu, even simple shit like Signal app is a fucking .deb, not even a .rpm. I mean the nix repo is huge, but I'm not sure how secure that shit is, but I love the reproducibility, especially for server configs.

yeah, it came from my dotfiles on github and last distro i was running was omarchy, so that line would normally pull the name of the current omarchy theme. i should probably just have it pull my gtk theme since gentoo doesn't have its own theme hook system. i've just been leaving it alone with the paint palette glyph as 'this is my color palette' but the space from the missing variable of $omarchy_theme is kind of unnerving

I tried to ask last thread, but:
- are Nixpkgs vetted? Who is maintaining these? Is this worse or better than the AUR?
- do I have to learn a new language to install packages?
- how stable is the system? Nix users always talk about rolling back or pinning packages, I've never had to do that in ANY distro.
- would nix packages take up more storage and ram than traditional distros (debian, arch, fedora)
- are nix packages slower?
Plz answer nix users.
>>
>>109310657
> are Nixpkgs vetted? Who is maintaining these? Is this worse or better than the AUR?
mostly. There's an approval process and it must conform to basic guidelines for submission to the repository. Much more packages then Arch, but maintainers update them slower due to the process
- do I have to learn a new language to install packages?
you need a basic understanding of the package manager/nix syntax in order to add packages. If you are just using the package manager, it's as simple as appending a line to an array and rebuilding.
If you don't wan't to install it to your configuration, you can run it from the commandline very easily.
- how stable is the system? Nix users always talk about rolling back or pinning packages, I've never had to do that in ANY distro.
Extremely stable.
Rolling back the System for things like kernel incompats and other reasons on NixOS is stupid simple. Useful if you are tracking the unstable release and something breaks, or you finally update after 3 years and the new rebuild would normally break everything (looking at you arch)
- would nix packages take up more storage and ram than traditional distros (debian, arch, fedora)
when installed, no. But do to how it builds them, it keeps builds and tooling/deps cached until you run something like `nix collect garbage -d`. These can take up a lot of space, but cleaned anytime
- are nix packages slower?
No. A lot of packages are compiled on your system without binary distribution, but this takes no work and only time on your end, hence what was written for the last point.
>>
>>109307740
I have no use for any of the features and felt like learning linux again without anything gained in return. The whole edit the configuration > nixos-rebuild switch dance just to install something and the resulting wall of text output in the terminal made me appreciate pacman even more. I just data hoard, encode video as a hobby and play 1-2 gaymes, clearly not the target audience of this distro by any means.

Haven't had the time to overcome the initial learning curve. Overall, I like the idea of NixOS, but I can't afford to have a system I don't really understand right now. Once I have time to make the switch, I'll probably be happy with it.
>>
>>109307740
I took it 3 weeks ago and it's ok, I guess. I just realized that it's a good distro if you are not an ADHD distro hopping nigger.

If you like updating your computer and change your configs daily, NixOS is not for you. It's more of install, configure and forget for 3 weeks before updating.

I am using stable channel though, but I guess that's how NixOS is supposed to be used. I just configure a few apps with NixOS, the rest I just use mkOutOfStoreSymlink with my old dotfiles and move on with my life.

I don't like how fragmented system configuration is on normal distros and I'm already balls deep in NixOS anyway so may as well. I like having my entire system clearly configured in a few nix files synced to my git repo. But I like how fast security updates get pushed and how stable Debian is though. Free system rollbacks are nice too.

Yep, moved over from Fedora and its been a breeze. Initial learning curve was somewhat a pain in the ass but knowing my programs ain't gonna have a hissy fit when a library gets broken which happened to me somewhat often in Fedora is nice. Been using flakes with home manager, its nice to just have a handful of files that tell the OS how i wanna use it.
>>
>>109310657
Another NixOS user, not the other anon.

>are Nixpkgs vetted? Who is maintaining these? Is this worse or better than the AUR?
Yes, there are designated maintainers for packages and each package needs a maintainer before it can be added. Being a maintainer is a commitment and they do stuff like backporting security fixes before upstream, for example.

>- do I have to learn a new language to install packages?
Yes, but don't worry, Nix is easy. You won't be using much of it to install packages, that's basically just adding a line to your config and rebuilding.

>- how stable is the system? Nix users always talk about rolling back or pinning packages, I've never had to do that in ANY distro.
Extremely stable. Rollbacks are actually a good thing. It lets you experiment with big changes without a fear of locking yourself out or needing a recovery usb. I only rollback very very rarely because I use unstable (rolling release) but if you use stable you should never need to.

>- would nix packages take up more storage and ram than traditional distros (debian, arch, fedora)
No. Everything is compiled and stored only once, just like "traditional" distros. The main thing is that everything is "installed" in the store side-by-side; for example you can have two libc's installed at different paths and only one will be used by your running system.

That's just a flat out lie. Packages only take up as much space as regular distros in ideal world, which it is not.
Each package is input-addressed closue of its dependencies, each dependency is input-addressed closure of its dependencies, each...
It takes a single patch anywhere in the closure to completely change the target, and the deeper the change the more things will have new hashes. Or not even a patch, just a stalled hydra job somewhere that only rebuilt half of the packages against new version of a common library.

Pic is a great example using glibc on my system.

I'm using nixos but damn the documentation sucks. I cloned the repo of some random guy for my multi pc config and used clankers for complex stuff. For example I have to use idapro which is a custom flake, but then I overlay it with libs from the high seas version
I also managed with the clanker help to define my color theme with noctalia v5 instead of something like stylix

I do use nix. I also use the home-manager module to install a bunch of packages into userspace, that are also applying my custom patches through overlays.
I will however never (again) use nixos nor home-manager to manager dotfiles on my personal machines.

The former I could see why someone would want to use it, though for me the cons outweigh the prost.
Managing dotfiles with nix though, that's pants-on-head retarded, and anybody who suggest doing that is a quadruple retard. User configuration exists to be changed ad hoc on demand, all the time. If you want to fill them in programmatically just use chezmoi. Don't subject yourself to fucking home-manager.

>>
>>109307740
It's extremely complex in order to implement a bunch of features I don't need or care about, it's slow, and I have no interest in using init systems that aren't Runit at this point.

It seems useful in some contexts dealing with complex corporate environments where reproducibility matters and bootstrapping is unavoidable. My bootstrapping process is setting up /boot and extracting a tarball. I've never had a problem where I needed to "rollback" my system because of a fucked up line in a config somewhere. Nix seems like a great way to make my overall experience worse for no real benefit.
