Why is Linux development centered around fancy UIs and trying to look/feel like MacOS, while the actual underlying system is a mess of 1970s code and bugs? Nerds will argue for hours about which "userland" or desktop environment is better, but scream bloody murder if anyone dares suggest that the core OS should be worked on. "It's open source, if you care that much submit a commit yourself" they bellow. Linux if the literal definition of sprinkling glitter on shit.
Since when do users touch kernel code? fucking retard
>>109313729Believe me, no Linux GUI feels like MacOS or Windows.
there are teams working on desktop environments and teams working on the kernel and the underlying systems, you want the DE people to stop working for a while?
>>109313729Because freetards don't really know enough about anything from kernel design to user experience to do anything better. It's helpful to think of the entire Linux ecosystem as a cargo-cult: it's all low-quality copies, in the hope that THIS time the gods will smile on them and rain down marketshare/games/working drivers/Photoshop.
>>109313741even the most bloated lunix DEs can't get feature parity with windows XP or early 2000s OS X
>Linux development is centered around fancy UIs
>>109313741kde feels pretty much like a cleaner windows 10, I moved from 10 to linux and after a while I started forgetting I wasn't w10 and got bored of kde
>>109313775>kde feels pretty much like a cleaner windows 10>left click>a bunch of dev optionsyeah noKDE is a fucking mess, no wonder it breaks when it tries to appeal to everyone.sometimes having more and more options is not the best answer
>>109313741I dunno, Guhnoome feels a lot like macOS - in that can't be customised in any way, and you feel like you're tied in three straitjackets one on top of the other.
>>109313788Idk why it's so hard to have presets that you can choose to tune if you want some halfpoint instead.>Hello and welcome to KDE. Please choose one of the three presets to begin:>>MacFag>>WinFag>>PoweruserFagThen you could tailor the experience a bit better. But no, we have to jam EVERYTHING into one fucking version of the DE and bloat the fuck out of everything just because.
>>109313788>>109313805I was a complete tard when I switched and it was no issue for me, I don't know what dev options you're talking about, everything is in that one settings panel, (which is miles between than the clusterfuck that is window's controls panel). I used wayland and nvidia, both which are notoriously bad and I could figure it out. If you don't like KDE by all means go use some other DE, I'm just saying it took me no effort to get used to it.
>>109313802macOS is usable out of the box gnomeshit needs 100+ extension to be barely usable
>>109313949Probably the OS itself - I'm not going to pretend I've used it long enough to check. The Finder though, is barely more capable OOTB than File Manager from Windows 3.1.Guhnoomeshit doesn't need 100+ extensions, it needs a fiery death in a volcano somewhere. One thing I'll give Finder is that it's stable (probably precisely because it doesn't do anything). We may meme about *krashes*, but Guhnoomeshit is nearly as bad.
>>109314036>The Finder though, is barely more capable OOTB than File Manager from Windows 3.1.this is a blatant lie lol
>>109314085I won't pretend I wasn't being hyperbolic. But as mentioned, it's a fucking straitjacket compared to Windows Explorer.(to be fair, Guhnoomeshit is a ballgag, buttplug, handcuffs, and six homosexual men with HIV.)

>>109314152>straitjacket compared to Windows Explorer.windows explorer can't even open a folder full of images and videos without shitting itself

>>109313729>NerdsThat's the problem. These so called Nerds are not actually competent. Much more, they want to project an air of superiority and technological prowess, which they do not in fact have. This is why they talk about easy stuff, like how it looks. They cant really be factually wrong, thus not be proven incompetent and therefore be embarrassed.Additionally this benefits them in relatability towards the normie. The normie, who does not posses any deeper technological understanding, can not appreciate the real complexity, the philosophies and pseudo-philosophies, the trade-offs and decisions involved in the creation of the software. He can only appreciate how something looks and feels.Trying to tell him about any kind of details will be too much information, tiresome and boring. He will not understand and say he can't code, unable to discern any kind of effort, skill or complexity level. The normie may be impressed by the fact, that one is able to code(or further is a "Techie"), but cant be any more impressed by stuff he knows nothing about. He would judge some fag, who installed Ubuntu as equally impressive to Terry Davis on first glance, probably being drawn to the Ubuntu side a little more, due to how it looks and feels.

They aren't trying to copy it out right, it's just a logical destination for trying to make UX work with the underlying system.>while the actual underlying system is a mess of 1970s code and bugs?Linux has far more application than just the desktop. Developers have to account for other things like servers, kiosks, IoT, embedded etc. It's often not a bug, just a configuration issue where you accidentally get a config meant for a server or something.>Nerds will argue for hours about which "userland" or desktop environment is better, but scream bloody murder if anyone dares suggest that the core OS should be worked on.There's also no such thing as the "core OS" to begin with. As I'm sure you've heard Linux is just one component of a complete OS that can be used with countless userlands and configurations. So in a way arguing about the userland is a debate over how to improve the "core OS".>The solution? All I have are my own opinions. But I will say this. 90% of "desktop environments" aren't actually desktops environments. They're implementations of the FreeDesktopOrg standards which get constant interference from politically motivated individuals, various orgs and companies (Red Hat, Canonical, Google), and it was never great to begin with. So everything is already on shaky ground. On top of that like I mentioned previously desktop distributions have to compensate with components made for servers and the like. Everything is going through an adapter made to fit a square block into a circular hole, and the adapter is made of wood!FOSS devs also aren't as motivated to provide a nice UX for normies. They're developers, they already know the commands and work arounds to fix an issue on their machine.
