i avoided emacs in favor of vim for years, saying emacs was too complicated. switched recently, instantly felt at home
Oh, yeah? And what do you need GNU Emacs for?
>>109314524Not OP, but emacs is an extensible computing environment. I use it as the front end for most of my computer needs.I just recently set up internet radio with this: https://github.com/jroimartin/radio
>>109314281I don't understand how people can use neovagina with a million plugging in lua (lmao) and tell me with a straight face that emacs is bloated. Vim I can understand, as it's preinstalled on most systems, but as soon as you start customizing it with plugins, might as well use the superior alternative: GNU Emacs
>>109314576>Not OPOpinion discarded.
>>109314577lua isn't bloatedWhat makes neovagina bloated is that they still support vimscript. Running two scripting engines is retarded.
>>109314524to read man pages with WoMan?
>>109314524i'm OPyou don't "need" anything other than vi (or even less, ed?) by that metric. however, i do make extensive use of org-mode, dired, i prefer the buffer-based architecture GNU emacs presents and how "raw" it feels, i even use the newsticker to browse a national news aggregator lol. most of these things come ootb with GNU emacs, my config is very much minimal
>>109314588Usecase for opinions?
>>109314667neovim is vibecoded slop these days and most of the features they are adding should be plugins. they should be improving the APIs instead of adding built-in ways to do everything (even the built-in package manager should go, even though I do use it)Lua is fine tho

>>109314680>you don't "need" anything other than vi (or even less, ed?)I'm unironically using ed more and more. It started with me just playing around with it to see what it could do, with no intention of switching from vim. Then started using it for smaller edits, and then gradually bigger edits. And then started extending it with history and syntax highlighting through rlwrap and now I have an .inputrc file full with ed keybindings (for quick navigation, listing TODO comments and listing all function names with line numbers, compiling and running, etc.). And If I want to change lines in ed vi-style, I can still copy and edit them with readline's vi-mode.

Yes, emacs is the best. I recommend trying org babel.
clusterfuckish buggy slow piece of shit with>>109314524eight megabytes and constantly swapping
>>109318288>I recommend trying org babel.A really good example to start with is Emacs Lisp Elements by protesilaos. It's a book on Emacs Lisp that's written in org-mode and exported to various formats. However, I prefer reading it in the original org version, because the Emacs Lisp source blocks can be executed by hitting `C-c C-c`, so one can run the code while reading the document to see what it does.https://github.com/protesilaos/emacs-lisp-elements- clone the repo- open the doc via `emacs elispelem.org`- when you come to a source block, put your cursor inside it and hit `C-c C-c`.

>>109321117>org2pdfinteresting
>>109314281You feel like that because you are not doing anything useful. Text editor should be a text editor and not an operating system.Emacs is bloated and slow, even buggy. Vim is retarded too unless you are working over a ssh connection.
Emacs is my most productive tool. In the last 20 years I've probably made more money using emacs than any other single piece of software. One of the best career choices I ever made was embracing emacs and the CLI rather than hopping from one FOTM editor to the next. It's my swiss army knife of technical problem solving.

I've been using emacs only with evil mode so far (particularly in doom emacs). Should I give vanilla keybinds a shot?
>>109336671might as wellI prefer them to any vim shitbut it depends on what you're used to I guessjust not a fan of modal editing myself
>>109336751Once you get used to them, the vanilla binding only really need a couple tweaks. They're the defaults for a reason. People do recommend remapping capslock to control though but I don't.
>>109336671>vanilla keybindsat least install god-mode and prevent rsi
>>109336671Yes. I used evil-mode for many years before finally giving vanilla a shot and I get it now. They won't make sense at first, but you'll soon realize that keychord editing is a lot less cognitive load than modal editing. With modal editing, there's a tiny barrier between the intended action and the current mode state that has to be dealt with for every decision. Eventually, with enough time getting used to the keybinds, you'll realize that not having this barrier and being able to just type when you need to type and do some action with a keybind requires zero mental effort
>>109336671Even if you use evil, a lot of the vanilla bindings are still there if you want to use them. I use predominately evil bindings, but I often mix in vanilla bindings too.C-x kC-x 0C-x 1C-\C-M-hC-M-\M-:a few non-evil bindings i use frequently
