I tried Helium but the uber compact UI the devs made default is just ugly as sin. Any other options just make it even smaller and annoying to use/ugly. Any foss chromium alternatives besides ungoogled?

Your best bet is a Firefox fork (whichever), stripped down with a customized user.js based off one of the popular preconfigs. Add umatrix configured to what you can tolerate, or ublock in medium mode if you're a baby. This is the best you will get, and it still sucks.
