This was an official mockup of what OSX was going yo originally look like.
>>109328893Not bad for what is probably 1999 era gui
>>109328893it's a shame they didn't go through with it. crapple would've gone belly up ~25 years ago if they did.
>>109328893Turned out it looked like nextstep, because it was nextstep.
>>109328893What does Miko do with Jonsdisk?
>>109328900It's 1997. Mac OS 8.
>>109329001Two steps forward, one step back.
>>109329138I just want to take this moment to appreciate Steve's vision. The little corner fold in a Sticky Note app is such an amazing detail. Skeumorphic design might be asscancer to devs and designers now (and I get it.), but I find that shit to be intuitive as heck.
>>109328893MIKO MIKO NURSEMIKO MIKO NURSE
>>109328893>fun, soulful, but inconsistent steve probably hated it
>>109328900i like my UI to be visually appealing. this OSX prototype looks cool, but could you imagine seeing that for 5 hours a day while you sort through your vast backlog of categorized furry porn? the Cinnamon desktop environment is peak: combines Windows 10/11 style minimalism without the adware and nested poorly-categorized hierarchical layout for settings.
Good thing they didn't coz it's utter arse.
>>109329811it's fun alright, when you consider excrement & vomit fun
>>109329473>Sticky Note appSteve Jobs was not there when any of that was done.
>>109328893looks like one of these movie computer ui, lol
>>109329473>LE STEEB WOOD NEVAR
>>109328893Ripped off from existing UI.
>>109330248See an optometrist immediately
Early 2000s desktops are insane.
>>109328893here's your javascriptOS saaar
>>109328893Technically impressive for late 90s but it looks like shit. Senseless clashing colors splashed around with little rhyme or reason. Needlessly big space-wasting controls at both the top and bottom, back when screens were much smaller.
>>109329138>Mac OS 8.That's actually Windows themed with this program:http://winmac.emuunlim.com/

Whats the most 80's anime cyber punk aesthetics desktop gui on the market?
>>109330354Meanwhile.... >Frame: A New X11 Server Implementation Written Entirely In x86_64 Assemblyhttps://www.phoronix.com/news/Frame-X11-Server-Assembly>So the stack now looks like this: The Linux kernel at the bottom. On top of that, frame. Then the window manager tile with the info bar strip. Inside tile runs the terminal glass, and in glass lives the shell bare. Bolt has been promoted from screen locker to greeter, showing gdm the door. All of it Assembly. All of CHasm together is about 100 thousand lines. The stack it replaced (gdm, X11, i3, conky, wezterm, zsh) is somewhere north of fifty times that. I did it for the battery life. I am not sure this laptop has a fan anymore. Except me.>Today I put numbers on it. Idle on battery, frame and Xorg pull the same watts, because the panel and the wifi own that number anyway. But Xorg burns almost three times the CPU that frame needs to do nothing. And tile and glass used zero milliseconds over three minutes of measuring. The desktop sits completely still until I touch it.
>>109329001Well yeah but the mockup is presumably from before the chose NeXt. Wasn't BeOS in the running at one point?
>>109330167You forgot the mouse with the charging port on the fucking bottom lmao.
Steve Jobs based OS X on his NextStep operating system. And if you install WindowMaker you can see the trace of the same genetics even now.
Yeah, it's ass. But when platforms are first emerging "optimal design" isn't always apparent except in hindsight. What the end user wants isn't always apparent because even they don't know yet.I liken it to early video games. Specifically, look at level design. While there were examples of pretty good level design (think Super Mario Brothers), oftentimes level design sucked in comparison to today. People didn't necessarily have an idea of what works versus what doesn't works because there was no data to base that off of. And, indeed, when you go back and play many older games they are frustrating as a result. "Old school difficult" is often actually just poor design. So same with GUIs and web design. Gotta figure out what doesn't work before you can hone in on what does. It's an evolving process.
>>109330887Probably this one.
>>109331998Throw a pixel chibi anime girl in the corner and pointless metrics showing randomly increasing/decreasing numbers and its perfect.
>>109328893That looks like every version of Linux I ever tried.
the user above is trans and lives in india btw
>>109332194It looks absolutely nothing like any Linux distribution desktop ever
>>109331998You know if you just took away the little bit faux 3D shading, made it white with the buttons blue or purple or something instead of solid blue-gray, it'd look about like modern flatshit.
>>109330334I used to run this..
>>109332111>pointless metrics showing randomly increasing/decreasing numbers and its perfectSome inspirations ...
>>109332492I cannot agree. This is far more elegant.
>>109328893Looks like an evolution of Nextstep, but too much fluff and no real consistency.
I would love to be developing apps in the aqua eraNow appkit looks like shih
>>109330334What ever happened to skins? Ricing was on a whole other level in 2000s.
>>109330334e16 is still available.
>>109336254I remember the desktop cube days
>>109336272if you weren't here spinnan cubes back in the day you aint shit
>>109336272Glory Days of Ricing
>>109336272I remember trying out PCLinuxOS from a magazine CDRom back in the day too
>>109336254Same reason modern flat design is a thing. All these themes where made for 720p screens and now we have high dpi 1440p and 4k.
>>109330334We need to go back to this design language
>>109330334How did the GIMP make itself display its title on the left side of the window
>>109336870It's probably a window manager rule. You can do similar in window managers like fluxboxhttps://fluxbox.org/help/man-fluxbox-apps/
>>109336254>What ever happened to skins?Designers arrived, imposing their views on your computers. Obviously, they wanted to prevent others from chaning their vision.
>>109330354this kills the iSaar
>>109331172The mockup reads "02 25 97... stupid ass-backwards murican way of writing dates, but anyway:>On December 20, 1996, Apple Computer announced its intention to acquire NeXT.>The deal was finalized on February 7, 1997.So if the date is correct, the mockup was made after the acquisition. And yes, BeOS was a contender. And some people praise it, say it was a better system, it would have been the technically superior choice... but that's only half the picture. Apple also needed a hardware shakeup, someone gutsy like Steve Jobs to slash their abstruse product line and approve Jony Ive's wild designs. Apple without him would have kept making beige boxes and fading into irrelevance.
>>109336272>CompizI recall that modest machines could handle all that crazy shit just fine, but totally choke with Windows Vista's much tamer Aero effects.
