Do power supplies these days really ever fail?Just something that popped into my mind when looking at the guts of my old PC with its Corsair CX600 from 2014. It might've only had a meagre three-year warranty, but it lasted eight years of active use and then four years of random use after that. I also remember how in the early 2000s, we had our family PCs pop a power supply every so often.

>>109333199My cousin claimed his entire build build died when their power tripped last year, but I suspect it was only his power supply that popped since he's salvaged parts from it since. It was some 1000w corsair psu. Hooked up to a surge protector and everything. He's got his new build hooked up to a USP now. That all said it's still possible but I feel like a lot of big name PSUs are pretty solid and reliable this day and age. It's only when you're getting the sketchy bronze rated ones where it gets dicey, but you've probably gotta be real bad off to not be able to afford at least a gold rated psu.

https://linustechtips.com/topic/1634763-need-help-with-yellow-dram-led-on-first-boot/So on last thread I asked exactly this, and this dude just replaced the RAM. Anons told me that it was my fault, that all I had to do is to reset the CPU and try again, maybe one stick at a time and whatnot.I don't really want to send it back, so is there anything else I could try?
>>109333920just got a samsung and its working fine so far, have yet to push it though, rest of the parts have yet to come in, so I set it up with my good ol xbox one, just to make sure it worked fine
>>109333946so u tried each ram stick individually and it didn't work?
>>109333920my experience in the past with ASUS was alright though the best IPS monitor I had was from ViewSonic. No BLB and barely any glow. You could only hear a high pitched noise at high fps when it was quiet. Not sure if their current lineup is still as good as the monitor I had back in the day.

>>109334149maybe you'll want more storage and ram, winblows 11 is demanding, and so are most browsers these days. Also you will need a cooler for the cpu i think.Mini ITX cases are aids to work in but if space is an issue, i see no problem with it, smaller form-factor mobos are more prone to problems and failure i hear however.
>>109334175I should have specified I'm going to install Ubuntu. The CPU comes with a stock fan I'll replace if I need to, but I suspect it'll run way under load almost always. mATX is fine imo and I don't want to torture myself building it with ITX/mITX.
Today I will remind you that the best pc display is in fact a TVThe Samsung S95H/S99Hif you don't need more than 120-165hz and can cope with 55-77"I kinda now regret not picking up a cheap s95f on sales few months ago, maybe maybe they fixed more bugs latelyI will NOT buy a monitor, although the 4k 360hz qdoled might be pretty good
>>109334204Lmao @ that task bar size.I'm not falling for the using 55" TV as a monitor meme. You don't need TV levels of HDR brightness when you're sitting closer to the display.

Idk if this is the right thread for this, I don't visit /g/ often. I'm trying to add my old HDD to my new PC but it's not being registered at all. Checked the bios and no detection there either. Does it mean the SATA cables aren't plugged in correctly or is the drive just dead?

>>109332190>for no reasonNiche products that attract some attention keep prices high. With that said, matx is a mass produced form factor and do you really need your computer to be smaller than this: https://www.jonsbo.com/en/products/C6.html ?

I got curious one day and turns out that one of my empty toilet paper rolls was the perfect height to prop my GPU up and even removed some of the fan rattling I was experiencing at a certain rpm. Naturally, this temporary fix has now been in use for half a year.
Now that RDNA2 users are getting FSR4, what's a reasonable asking price for a 6900xt? Brand is Powercolor Red Devil. I was thinking $500 but is that too high compared to a 9070? "$500 or best offer?". It technically should have more value than it did a few months ago thanks to AMD backporting FSR4. I upgraded to a 7900xtx which I'm now seeing go for 2x what I paid for it but not sure if RDNA2 went up as much. Thoughts?

>>109334942I'm a bit skeptical these Chinesium no-name brands actually meet any of their advertised specs. Plus I'm not interested in 4K when the viewing distance with 27" will be like three feet away. Also I'm totally done with Wangblows.
>>109335026
>>109335050What does minimum viewing distance here refer to?
>>109335026The name brands use the same exact Chinesium panels under the hood. You pay extra for no technical benefit.Resolution doesn't matter, it's the pixel density it confers at 27" that matters for everything including text and photos. If the cheaper better-spec panel doesn't meet your expectations just return it and then buy the more expensive one, you can't lose.
>>109335083The phrasing is wonky due to the context of the chart but that is the furthest away you should sit - you can sit closer if you wish. The core trend is more resolution for a given screen size means sitting closer so you can actually see the pixels you paid for.
If you are buying a Ryzen 5 non 3D should you just not be a cheapskate and still buy a dual tower anyways? or single tower and save those few bucks.
>>109335122The funny thing is that these all look the same to 1080p users
>>109335122>>109335135I might consider 4K then but the specific monitor I chose had factory color calibration which was appealing. That CUNPU (lol) barely even has a website and also only DP 1.4 which I thought can't push 4K at that refresh rate?
>>109335141I'd get the non-x version that comes with a cooler, put the CPU in eco mode, and call it a day.
>>109335181I've been thinking about it, it is way cheaper where I live, so double savings, but I don't know if the stocks are any good.
>>109335083the higher the PPI the closer you can be before you can count individual pixels. What this chart neglects is that you may not be able to focus on the whole screen anymore if you're too close. For example the recommended viewing distance for 27" in order to have the whole picture in your FoV is 80cm as well which is one reason 24" 1080p, 27" 1440p and 32" 4k are common recommendations.
>>109334420none, go for it, but add a second support near the middle of the gpu facing away from the mobo aswell, so the pcb doesn't bend away from the gpu-core and vram modules.Either that, or vertical mount it and accept the latency-cuck tax.
>>109335172>I might consider 4K then but the specific monitor I chose had factory color calibration which was appealing.Factory calibration doesn't mean it's necessary "good" calibration. I have an old dogshit benq xl2411 as my side monitor that only manages to do 60hz via HDMI and 144hz via DVI Dual Link. It's too old and budget-y to have had a DP port at the it was manufactured. Problem is that my 4070S doesn't have a DVI port. All the discussions surrounding it is quite old but I was just wondering if there's a way (adapter or otherwise) to get this sucker running at 144hz again because the 60hz ghosting is absolutely unbearable even as a side monitor and I remember it being smooth as butter and having zero ghosting at 144hz, at least in it's prime nearly a decade ago.I've tried DVI-DP adapters before but it seems like they're all single link (60hz) so I don't know if I'm just shit out of luck here.

I need a new 1440p monitor around $500. I mostly game and am fairly sensitive to poor motion clarity. Is a budget OLED my only option at this price range?I obviously want the best looking monitor I can get and with minimal to no ghosting but I am not very fond of the idea of a monitor that has to be maintained like a bonsai tree with the pixel shifting, lengthy refresh etc and still might only last me a few years.MiniLED seems like an option as well but I'm having a hard time finding any winners that are also available locally. I've heard they're not perfect either of course but at least you know what you're getting (improved IPS with dimming, if I've understood it right)So far I've considered the ASUS 27" ROG Strix XG27AQDMGR (a bit too expensive at MSRP but I've found an open box selling for $560 which could be worth overspending a bit) and the Xiaomi 27" G Pro 27Qi

>>109334002>xboxXbox was Ed Fries passion project and Xbox was a huge financial risk for microsoft. Those PC components cost a fortune compared to the cheap RISC hardware of PS2 and GC. They lost $125 for each console unit sold. Using a hard drive as a game data cache was also something never done before back in the day. There was a ton of creativity involved in the making of the xbox.It was an affordable way of playing Doom 3, Halo, Morrowind, KOTOR, etc. Xbox essentially shipped with a Pentium 3 733 MHz, 64MB DDR, a (slightly customized) Geforce 3, and an 8GB HDD for $299. A GeForce 3 was a pretty high-end card for 2001 too, a GeForce 2 and Directx 7 were really the standards still in 2001. Xbox OS was basically hyper-optimized Windows 2000, it's probably one of the most performant consumer-oriented x86 operating system ever written. It's so funny that Halo was used to advertise the NVIDIA GeForce 2 GTS and then that graphics card literally couldn't run Halo CE.Xbox 360 Xenos was factually the first commercial GPU to have unified shaders, and remained the only one until Nvidia released the 8000 series in late 2006. It wasn't possible for any contemporary GPU to do what the 360 was doing in 2005. DX9 and eDRAM, 10MB, and the Xbox 360 does MSAA for free if you can fit your render targets within that 10MB limit. Many game resolution on-screen was lowered to 960x544, with the developer deploying 4x multi-sampling anti-aliasing to smooth off the edges. One reason MS switched from x86 on the first Xbox to PPC on the 360 was it ran too hot. This was Pentium 4 era. They revisited x86-64 processors for the Xbox One (and Sony with PS4) because PowerPC was looking like a dead end at the time (ran too hot, bad choice for high performance embedded) and ARM hadn't caught up. Xbox One includes 8 GB DDR3 memory, which are connected using a 256-bit memory interface. Xbox One includes 12 GB GDDR5 memory, which are connected using a 384-bit memory interface.

Most GPUs were intentionally gimped out of Shader Model 2.0 and couldn't play Halo PC with specular highlights and bumpmapping. Gearbox had to potato-ify or remove many of the graphical effects when they ported the game to PC. Gearbox needed to write a fixed function renderer to support older 3D cards. Shaders had to be toned down for DX8 back then, the PC DirectX lacked a ton of calls present on the Og Xbox's DirectX.The fact that the DOOM 3 port and Morrowind worked as well as it did on the original Xbox is a testament to how powerful it was, as many people were upgrading their pcs just to play it, and the port was running on a console from 2001 if I remember correctly.
