Okay, so I was randomly thinking, like yesterday or the day before, of this Canadian pizza reviewer guy, for the first time in like 2 years or more.

The thing is, I watch literally thousands of videos of food/shorts every week, on both YouTube and Instagram. I have a few creators I watch consistently, but I have not thought about this guy specifically for a very very long time.

I did not talk about him out loud, did not try looking for his videos, and did basically nothing different from my regular shorts activity to warrant a suggestion from his account on my feed.

I literally just thought about it the other day, and he’s now suggested on my feed. The reason I brought it up now is because this isn’t the first time I feel like this same thing has happened.

Is there anything we know about current phone technology to explain this? It seems quite common nowadays from other users experiences as well.

There's nothing mysterious about this, "they" just have so much data on you that you're easily predictable

You didn't "just think about it", you were programmed to think about it. The algorithm has been feeding you content intended to trigger thoughts about particular topics, so when it later shows you something, you think to yourself, "hey, there's that thing I was thinking about, let me click on it". It's not mind reading, it's mind control, which is arguably scarier.

i regret reading this

did you by any chance maxvaxxed?

Yeah, it’s cute. I wanted to find him again anyway, so it’s not like the outcome is bad. I can see how this could just happen to people and they just blow over it for that reason alone

But unless it’s some completely random variance, I still want to know how my phone knew to suggest it

Right, so there’s an actual process behind it. But it’s so suttle that it actually makes you think you’re going crazy.

Kind of based

Yeah, it’s possible that it’s just a suggestion from watching another closely related account. But what about mind reading? No?

nah, you definitely saw him on a feed but didn't register it at the time

In fact it probably stuck a recommended video of this guy in his line of site and he was not consciously aware of it so doesn't remember.

You've got it backwards. It's programming your mind, not reading it.

>Can our phones read our minds?
Obviously not. Experimental tech exists for reading some things out of a brain, but it's currently only working under lab conditions and requires dozens of electrodes pasted to your head to get a decent quality EEG.

You are however more predictable than you think, and it's eerie how good predictions can be when they have as much activity data from across the web, phone location data, microphone data depending on apps and settings, etc.

Also, every time you scroll your YouTube feed, it makes dozens of suggestions. The algorithm seems to give you mostly what you've been watching recently, and then occasionally digs up stuff you used to watch or entirely new stuff to see if you're interested. All the times it does this and you weren't thinking about it recently, you think nothing of it and scroll on. Then the occasional time it digs up something you were thinking about, you focus on that and wonder how it did that.
