What's the verdict on the Xbox consoles? It was an affordable way of playing Doom 3, Halo, Morrowind, KOTOR, etc. Xbox essentially shipped with a Pentium 3 733 MHz, 64MB DDR, a (slightly customized) Geforce 3, and an 8GB HDD for $299. A GeForce 3 was a pretty high-end card for 2001 too, a GeForce 2 and Directx 7 were really the standards still in 2001. Xbox OS was basically hyper-optimized Windows 2000, it's probably one of the most performant consumer-oriented x86 operating system ever written. Xbox 360 Xenos was factually the first commercial GPU to have unified shaders, and remained the only one until Nvidia released the 8000 series in late 2006. It wasn't possible for any contemporary GPU to do what the 360 was doing in 2005.
