My childhood dream was to be a computer programmer
I am now a grown man broken by manual labor
Please give me any reason, any hope to pursue my childhood dream in the age of AI.

Well.
If I know you had a soul, I'd say personal fulfillment.

Do you have one?

It's not as much as a megamind task as the fart sniffing circle jerkers ego maniac cultists want you to believe it is.
Mastery is probably just as hard, if not harder than other tasks, but there are avenues.
What is your level of knowledge

You can always do it for fun in your free time. If you do I recommend you pick Lisp. They seem to have one of the healthiest and friendlier communities for hobbyists.

The first step is simple, just start. You won't be a programmer if you don't trying it. The way is simple: Algorithms, first language like C, little projects.
And doesn't has fear, the AI is your friend to help you in code review and other situations. And to be a good AI user, you will need be a good programmer too.
Start using some courses from Youtube, choice a way, example:
>Oh, man i wanna be a back-ender
>Way: Algorithms, C, HTML/CSS, JS and PHP TO BACK END
>Oh man, i wanna be a data-annalist
>Way: Algorithms, C, Python and math to help you.

Some notes:
Buy books, some things the books will help you more than a YouTube course
>But i don't want
Your problem.

>php
yuck. if he wants to be a backend dev c# or java are better markets to target in pretty much every conceivable metric. learning C can also be completely ignored if his desire is just to get a job.
