The original Cranky Geek, John C Dvorak has died and I am sad. I enjoyed listening to his hot takes on tech for the past decades and helped me realize everyone is a shill and everything is a scam in tech.

Now what will I look forward to on Thursdays and Sundays?
>>
>>109347995
Rip In Piss, in the morning.
>>
>>109348017
kys shill
>>
>>109347995
vax status?
>>
>>109348090
He was very anti vax
>>
Literally who?
>>
>>109348164
If you don't know who he is why are you even on /g/?
>>
>>109348164
Forgot the name of the band, but his uncle was a keyboarder, almost a century ago
>>
>>109348164
apparently he was a writer for some technology magazines decades ago and did some other tech journalism stuff.

i've also never heard of him, maybe he's more well-known in america
>>
>>109348164
He invented a keyboard that nobody uses.
>>
>>109348099
interesting... sounds like a cool guy
>>
>>109348358
That was his uncle. He was one of the first tech trolls. He probably visited /g/ every now and then. Damn it John, why couldn't you have given us four more years.
>>
>>109347995
>everyone is a shill and everything is a scam

what video exactly?
>>
>>109347995
at least he made it to 80.
>>
>>109348453
He said it all the time on No Agenda, he often mocked the TWiT panel the corporate shills they are.

Damn, I didn't know Sunday's show would have been his last show. John was like the tech dad I always wanted.
>>
>>109348164
Yikes, iPad kid...
>>
Okay. That is sad. Im genuinely hoping Adam Curry is coping. They did a pidcast on July 19. Dvorak died on July 20.
>>
ITM John. And Fuck that fat fuck Leo over at twit.

Thoughts to Adam who is now dealing with the utter joy of becoming a Grandfather combined with the death of a close friend and colleague.

It's crazy what a massive piece of shit he became.

>>109349186
NGL I had to check if twit was still active before I made the comment. Seems they abandoned the rented studios they spent ~$100k renovating and now everyone remotes in. Ironic really considering Leo was so anti having presenters remote host that he canned Tom.
>>
>>109347995
You could commune with his ghost through spiritism and the occult.
>>
>>109349381
They lost the lease because Leo's new wife Lisa who is an accountant forgot to renew it lol

This is one of those things that sounds so stupid that it's gotta be bullcrap - then you realize it's 100% possible given some of the decisions she made in the past.

he's not famous for the podcast, he's mostly known for being a popular columnist at PC Magazine in the 80s back when tech was fun. so yeah a lot of boomer techies love him but zillenials either don't know him or only know him for running a chud podcast
>>

>>109352381
the podcast is dead, curry is ok but really needs JCD to balance him out. listened to a couple of the eps with john's wife filling in while he got heart surgery and it was complete dogshit.

also kinda poor taste that their newsletter announcement had so much donation begging. john was 80 and i'm sure did well for himself, his kids are all adults with jobs, this isn't some case where the family is going to be destitute and desperately needs financial support. that whole thing has always annoyed me about no agenda, for how much they talk about the show being "ad-free", like a third of every episode is centered on donations and they bitch and moan every week about donations being low. RIP john
>>
>>109354015
The newsletter always had a lot of donation nagging but I appreciated them being able to say what they wanted without having to be advertiser friendly or censored by some company. I think coming from their traditional media backgrounds they weren't able to come up with a better model. I've always enjoyed Dvorak and didn't think I would enjoy Curry but he grew on me. I doubt I would have listened if it was a solo from either so I hope they figure it out.
>>
>>109354015

Yeah, Adam being a recent born again Christian will probably make him pretty insufferable if he doesnt have someone to reign him in.
looking at the twit podcasts they even honor him on windows weekly. maybe leo is a little more remorseful than i expected considering the public fight they had

John won at life, he had a beautiful loving wife, wonderful kids and touched the lives of a lot of people. I aspire to be like John.

>>109354015
I haven't had the chance to listen to the latest episode but I'd imagine once the 1 / 2 special tribute episodes are in the can Curry will try and continue the podcast with Mimi and a rotating list of guest hosts.

But realistically the podcast died Monday with John.

Technology journalists back then are a lot different from today. He worked as a chemist for an oil company, then did wine reviews for Bon Apetit I think. Started a software company in the late 70s and then started writing about computers in the 80s and 90s at Infoworld and PC Magazine when they would have hundreds of pages and cover hundreds of different companies and technologies. The TV version was Computer Chronicles. His appearance on the show with the PS/2 was pretty funny. Every month there was always something new and interesting in the computing landscape unlike now where a dozen companies dominate the news cycle. But back then it was so much more fun. I remember he covered some tinkerer in Taiwan who had overclocked a 286 so that it was a lot faster than a 386 for instance. Desktop publishing was new, photo editing was new, digital photography was new, printers, scanners, spreadsheets, 3d graphics, sound cards, monitors, modems, and tons of zany peripherals. Encarta, browsers, CD-ROMS, early web. You could look at the back of these magazines and there would be all kinds of mom and pop shops and 900 lines lol. He was around when the mouse was introduced and famously thought it was shit. In the 2000s he had his own show "Silicon Spin" and "Cranky Geeks" until 2010. He was a guest on This Week in Tech where he would sometimes take the host's phone and change the language to Chinese. He was the 10th most followed Twitter user back when it started and was a co-host on his boomer chud podcast with the inventor of podcasts.

He kept his old Lexus because he didn't like all the computerization in later cars and also kept his smartphone off in a drawer because he didn't want to be tracked. Zoomillenial tech journalists would never.
>>
Was pretty based until he started shilling for Israel and Trump.
>>
John said he was 74 years old but they said that he died at 80 years old. 6 year discrepancy.
>>
>>109361384
>Technology journalists back then are a lot different from today
You could argue journalists in general were different back then.
But yeah, he was something of a renaissance man.
>Computer Chronicles
He appeared on that show with Jared Taylor, whose niche back then was spreadsheet programs instead of hwite nationalism

Yeah journalists back then, for all the awfulness that mainstream media could bring, were at least competently trained. Enthusiasts like Tom's Hardware and Anandtech aped that style even if they could never quite pull it off but now tech sites don't even do that. PC Magazine is absolute shit now and is a temu version of Wirecutter which is itself a stupid affiliate listicle review site run by clueless vibe writers.

As for Jared Taylor who was big into tech and become an IQ-race guy, I can't blame him.

>>109361744
He'd been in the game long enough and actually had a lot of insider connections to notice that every startup promised to be a game-changer but most of them fizzled so his default reaction to any new technology after a while was usually "IT'S A SCAM". When the cloud was a big thing he thought it was just a rehash of the 90s thin-client computing model and would fail in the same way. At least he wanted it to. When AI came around it reminded him of the failed "expert systems" that were supposed to revolutionize everything in the 80s. When AI got better, he used it to make celebrities say stupid shit and he thought it was hilarious because he's an eternal boomer. Other than the older Lexus and keeping his cellphone off (he even used a prepaid plan), I think he stuck with Windows 10 on his main machine although he eventually became a fan of Linux. For all his hate of Apple I think the product he hated the most was the Chromebook. He hated software as a service, subscription models, and any software especially on a portable machine that required the internet. His takes on tech are all over the place but I think his main gripe was that tech journalism has basically become just fads and shilling.

>JCD and Adam would always call themselves antiwar.
>Now they're quick to say that war is America's #1 export.
Those aren't mutually exclusive. I'm antiwar but also notice that the US likes to chuck bombs people at home get antsy and I think Adam goes further and says the US just likes war period. As for Gaza, their discussion was "This seems like an inside job to keep Netanyahu in power because how could the IDF and Mossad miss this. We can't get any reliable information from there about how things are going because the news is all propaganda. The US wasted a ton of money on that humanitarian bridge. These pro-Gaza protests are probably inorganic. Jews are scared. Those Gaza tunnels seem fake. The media reporting is doing the classic explosions in the background coverage. Biden's government wants peace but never asked for a ceasefire so they're a bunch of hypocrites. Kushner and his Arab buddies are probably going to try to make money off reconstruction. Trump doesn't want to put troops in and I agree but they have no plan just like Iraq and Afghanistan. Stop asking us to take sides."

JCD absolutely hated the modern democrat party and its shift toward the democratic-socialist bloc. He used to be one though.

John deeply embraced the absurdity of the tech world, corporate structure and the media. He seemed to choose his opinions not based on some inner compass of what side of an situation was right, but by which side would be the most fun to argue.

He was a deep well of knowledge about the OG personal computing industry... he had dirt on all the big names, but wasn't nasty about it.

>>109361535
>John said he was 74 years old but they said that he died at 80 years old. 6 year discrepancy.

This got discussed in his memorial podcast episode. He lied about his age and birthplace to a New York Times reporter once and it got in printed in the paper. Right in the feels. I didn't know Cheifet died less than a year ago. When I was a kid I always thought he was kind of rude to the nice and enthusiastic presenters and didn't let them talk about their product in depth. Apparently a lot of people felt that way but it turns out that he knew that the industry norm was to shill as hard as possible for as long as possible and he forced them to keep things to a short demo.

>I can't imagine dropping spending that much on a computer these days
you likely wouldnt have a computer back then. relatively few households had one.
as for the cost people do drop that much on one today. anyone buying a dgx spark or a strix halo(framework desktop, or some other chinkbox) today is dropping $4k on a computer.
back then there were word processors; computers with screens that only ran a text editor that was only a few hundred dollars, if you only needed to type text to a document.
>>
>>109372109
Which ones of Art's 3 wives was a witch?
>>
>>109372159
That 8.5k Dell was a low to mid-tier model. 8.5k today gets you a top-tier system easily even with the insane AI pricing. Although most households did not have a 386 in 1990, there were probably a couple million that did. I doubt there are over even one million households with a DGX spark now despite the higher population and higher inflation adjusted incomes. People aren't buying $9000 machines because a $1000 machine is fast and useful enough for most people and gaymerz are generally fine with a $2000 one. Back then, doubling CPU performance was really noticeable but that's not the case for most people today.

That's what corps were paying. They're paying a little less now per seat, for far more PCs. And $8K is pretty entry level for pro mac systems.

Families were buying sub $2000, sometimes sub $1000, sometimes cheaper Commodores/Apple II systems.
>>
>>109378900
corporations are paying a little under $8,400 per PC these days? Aren't their machines normally pretty dinky Office things?
>>
>>109379017
Depends. I'm at a fairly big place, multi-cities, and different departments have different needs. Cheapest spec is about $450, some seats are about $4K, laptops run about $2500-$3000, design dept gets some great gear, mac and not, for $8K - $10K.

What would you the average is? It's gotta be well under $8,400.

I guess the comparison works with the design department. Since the 90s Dell with a color monitor works out to $11K-13K today with the 1MB RAM machines let alone the top spec 16MB config you could say that's not that far off $8K-10K. But if we look at Mac pricing, their high end Apple IIfx is over $17,000 today and I'm sure it could be optioned out quite a bit.

>>109379165
Hard to say the average, I don't have complete data (not at all my department, I just know what some of them run).

The high end Mac is super high end though -- we usually get the whatever, mac studio specced highly for our designers, although I don't think we've gotten any since this past winter -- I bet they'd want to compromise if they bought a few today.

>And $8K is pretty entry level for pro mac systems.

Yes. Listen to this talk radio call from the early 90s. Bitch thought her $10k mac would last 10 years.

I guess normies weren't really tracking the super rapid changes back then. A 10 year old computer would have been an absolute dinosaur in 1990 or 2000 but here I am on my machine from 2013 and it does everything I want.

Right on the money. Switching old computers to SSD made them feel 10x faster than when they were new. Booting and starting a lot of programs used to take long enough that I would grab a drink while the machine was going crrrrrrrr crunch crunch crrrrrrr but now it's all done in seconds, if that.

Leo is a retard and people should just ignore him, same goes with Adam Curry

I've listened to their podcast and it always seemed like Adam was running it for the most part and JCD was a color commentator. Since I mainly listened for JCD's stories, I'm glad Adam made that possible.
>>
>>109389645
i was always more impressed by JCD's analysis than Curry's. Curry is great at production, but over the last 6-8 years, Adam has spread himself pretty thin between all of the different podcasts he is hosting.

I will say the No Agenda improved greatly once Adam stopped getting high af before every show. It's a shame they both got so fixated on Covid. There were hour long segments on covid for YEARS... it was like hearing "the sky is blue" over and over. Yes... there was a lot of bullshit that went down, but it's boring af to hear ad nauseam.
>>
>>109389725
Their analyses seemed all over the place. Like with the Iran thing: something about breaking a North Sea British conspiracy, military industrial complex paying off AIPAC lobbyists, long-term strat against China, and probably a bunch of other theories I forgot. The main point of the show, media deconstruction, was solid and it does seem like JCD brought more to the table there but I think you could get the essentials after maybe a dozen episodes.

I could never really take Adam seriously after he tried to do an IRL meet with someone who claimed to be an alien. Him not getting high was an improvement definitely. Agree that the Covid segments got tedious but when I heard some of the memorial segment, so many people were thankful about their Covid coverage and how it helped them through the intense fearmongering campaign that I can forgive that.

practically. roughly, anyway. approximately. He wasn't perfect. He was dry, and he was very un-optimistic.

There was some benefit to the assymetry of the power of writers, because it was less "chatty".

Yes and Yes.

If I had to guess it'll be members of the Dvorak family and people like Void Zero, Darren O'Neil, and others who provide high "value" to the show.

They were already hemorrhaging listeners since they started supporting war in Iran and Trump. Might as well retire and collect SS

that their boostagrams were costing them more to host than receiving and upset a lot of people building it

considering a boostagram is a small json file thats not what they said at all. all the hosting costs are the database of podcast RSS feeds they call the podcast index and all the automations and APIs they maintain to not make that index go down or fill with spam.
