>>109349943>cathedral builder doesn't want to give up authority4-color me surprised, because i am a torus
>>109349943>its not fair because im too stupid to understand the source code!!there are plenty of forks of the linux kernel that somehow manage just fine
>>109350109Like what?
>LinuxNo one uses this shit so it literally doesn't matter
Codeberg has spoken against AI and LLMs.If you maintain a fork of Linux there, it might not last long if it's a more recent kernel.
Anyway, death by a thousand forks. BSD wasn't as successful as it couldve been, because of this.
>>109349943>Linux cannot be forkedIt absolutely can be, but to build a community that can maintain a linux fork would require Linus to have truly fucked up and your side to be in the utmost right, neither of which happened. AI is a tool, if your own personal philosophy is to never use AI then never use it, nobody gaf, nor you should care about people who do use it, Linus could've worded it differently but he was absolutely right anyway.>We must table political, moral, and ethical blah blahTrannybabble
>>109349943I don't get it, what's wrong with using AI as a tool for programming? Plenty of bugs and security vulnerabilities in the kernel have been found and fixed recently with the use of AI.
>>109350182meh bait
>>109350194The problem is the dumpster truck of ai written slop code dropped onto the maintainers not ai found "bugs"
>>109349943It's a stupid argument. There is no ethical computation under fossil fuel electricity, and Linux maintenance policy started glowing roughly around 2003. There never was an "outside", because as soon as you care about beep boop on a personal level you are lost.
>>109350208You can just not include bad code. What the fuck are you talking about?
>>109350213>Linux maintenance policy started glowing roughly around 2003Explain???
>>109350231The VOLUME of it is the problem you retard. The godot maintainers had to put their foot down about it a while ago but linus is too much of a bitch to.
>>109350245How does the VOLUME change the fact that if they get slopcode they can simply... drop it?
AI can be useful but it's impossible to maintain a degree of quality if you open the floodgates in an open source repo. Unironically closed-source software that keeps the walled garden up and maintains strict coding guidelines and vetting will benefit from AI while open source will suffer a death by a million commits
>>109350123android, raspberry pi, wsl2
>>109350265They can't drop it. They have 10 times the volume of pull requests now and linus insists that the maintainers have to go over the slop requests just the same as the earnest ones.
>>109350270>2 massive glowing megacorps and a company that only has to support 2 boardsYou're not helping your argument.
>>109350292That's a spam issue, not an AI issue.
>>109350305It's both. If they were all good pull requests, even if it were also 10x the normal amount, then they wouldn't be spam. They're getting flooded with low quality shit.
>>109349943>Linux cannot be forkedLets just ignore the fact that Google alone has forked it several times for several purposes.
>>1093502422026 - 2003 = 23 => illuminati confirmed
>>109350321Yes if the spam wasn't spam then it wouldn't be spam. How is any of this retard monkey rhetoric an argument for dropping AI altogether?
>>109350372And if it wasn't written by ai it wouldn't be automatically shit.
>>109350231>>109350265Because you need to read the code before knowing whether it's shit or not. AI just increases the amount of code that needs to be read, while also that code that is created by AI is (allegedly) shit en masse. Reading code is pretty slow and difficult
>>109350443Then ban the spammers.
>>109349943I'm confused about how the whole Developer Certificate of Origin thing is gonna work with AI contributions. How do you guarantee that the code AI gives you is not someone else's code? When you make commits to the Linux project I thought that you had to git --signoff by saying that it's yours.>By making a contribution to this project, I certify that:>(a) The contribution was created in whole or in part by me and I have the right to submit it under the open source license indicated in the file; or> (b) The contribution is based upon previous work that, to the best of my knowledge, is covered under an appropriate open source license and I have the right under that license to submit that work with modifications, whether created in whole or in part by me, under the same open source license (unless I am permitted to submit under a different license), as indicated in the file; or > (c) The contribution was provided directly to me by some other person who certified (a), (b) or (c) and I have not modified it.I feel like bringing AI code in would cause a crazy legal issue like the SCO lawsuit.
>>109350265>they can simply... drop it?have you ever contributed to a codebase in your entire lifetime?
>>109350466What spammers? The PRs aren't coming from people who are consistently trying to get their code merged 50 times or something, it's a different person every time
I can understand how denying AI generated code would reduce the amount of review that needed to be done, but doesn't that only apply if people are being honest? If everyone submitting slop claims its hand-crafted artisan code then they still have to deal with the same volume of slop.
Why can't they just use AI to rewrite the kernel in Rust?
>>109349943Is this thread created by devault personally or something? It's not even indexed by Google yet.
>>109350466I wish they would ban all of india yeah.
>>109350472I think people are working on that because AI will spit out gpl3 code or whatever else without telling you.
>>109350486Just check for em dashes or emojis in the comments/replies.
>>109350515It would be so based if ddevault would post here.imagine just spamming sjw articles all day every day, but when nobody is looking you become a 4chan chud. I cannot think of anything more based
>>109350572What do you mean? He literally used to have 4chan in his bookmarks
>>109349943>linux cannot be forkedAren't distros just that?
>>109350321If it is low quality then why don't they just ignore the PR. If someone opens a pull request that is obviously low quality garbage made by an AI with no human supervision then they just get a perma ban. Only people who have some reputation should be able to make giant code changes that require a long time to review anyway. The problem would sort itself out after a month at most. But this obviously has nothing to do with spam and it is just a fake argument that anti AI activists want to push. This article even admits that AI improves code if it is used correctly and he only objects to it because of "morals" and "ethics". It is basically tech veganism and they will shame you for not being part of it. There is nothing more to it and you can only win against these people by not playing their stupid games.>"Nooooo you can't use AI!">"AI causes climate change and it will kill millions of indians because they can't afford air conditioners!">"AI makes computers expensive so indians won't be able to afford computers anymore!">"Indians can't compete with cheap AI!">"If all the indians die how is tech supposed to survive? We NEED millions of third worlders to code for us!"Lmaoing at the state of freetards
>>109349943Not reading drewdogshit after that kiked longhoused slave attacked Stallman.Hope that helps!
>>109350720The irony is that Drew has no confirmed jewish ancestry while Stallman is actually jewish ...
>>109350662Linux is a kernel. Linux distros just take the same Linux kernel and package it together with all kinds of other software and their own package repos to make it into a usable system. The only relevant fork of the Linux kernel is the Android kernel.
>>109349943>some irrelevant Finnish boomer and his toy OS wield "tremendous degree of power and influence"???kek
>>109350182basedThe amount of retards on nu gee that cant differentiate slop code from reviewed AI code is baffling.
>>109349943>LLM regurgitates a few hundred lines of GPLv3 code near verbatim>"looks good to me!">kernel is now on GPLv3Thanks LLM chads.
>>109349943With that argument, I really hope this guy isn't a supporter of the GNOME project and their undue influence on desktop linux through GTK that they use to force backwards opinionated design decisions on everyone. He's not a huge hypocrite, right? ..right?
>>109350472>How do you guarantee that the code AI gives you is not someone else's code? You would need to either 1) generate very small bits of code while programming without the LLM at times or 2) run some kind of plagiarism tool that has access to all the LLM training data.
>>109349943Isn't that the guy that tried to cancel Stallman?
>>109350299>goalposts.exe
>>109349943Being an anti-ai programmer in 2026 must be exhausting. Not only are they writing all their code by hand all day long, but they also spend hours writing posts like this trying to convince other people to be like them. Imagine their poor neglected wives children and families while they spends hours writing anti-AI blog posts and shitty bug filled code that will just eventually be fixed by someone else using AI anyway.
I just forked Linux, go check out my github page.
Snailcat arguments bore me.
AI-Luddites really are the closest thing to vegans have in the techsphere. Even their arguments sound almost exactly the same.

>>109353437Why would you even want that? Even if it was allowed, even if it was encouraged by society, nobody would actually fuck a child, because the idea itself is un natural and just feels wrong, just like homosexuality feels wrong.Except this feels even more wrong.
>>109353437Pedophiles have always been welcomed to contribute to the kernel.
>>109350082This is literally every rom hacking and decomp tranny.
>>109349943Linux already exists in a highly forked and stable state.People may have to stop writing code for newer kernel ABIs before larger steps are taken or become unnecessary when the internet gets famously paused in 2027.
>>109353530>stableStale, autocorrect.Same difference.
>>109349943Linus is backed against a wall. He can't just ignore all the security vulnerabilities AI finds. And so many people use AI that he's worried someone WOULD fork if he adopted an anti-AI stance.
A bit off topic, but has anyone noticed that the guy maintaining Linux just happened to be called Linus.I mean, what are the odds?
>>109353629The official story is he was against the name because it made him look full of himself (he is), but someone else on the project went with it.
>>109353575I don't think anyone is concerned about Linus using AI to find vulnerabilities in Linux. That's not what this is about.
>>109350701>AI is boiling the Indians alive!!I already like it, you don't need to sell me on it.

it's entirely practical to fork the linux kernel nowtrivial evenyou just have to work at anthropic or openai

big project does something people don't like>heh, just make your own fork if you care that muchbig project does something people don't like (but AI)>abloobloo it's not realistic to make a successful fork :(where there's a will there's a way. sack up or go pound sand
