It's not that everyone is gone, it's that most people are drones programmed by the algos from X, Instagram and other social media (this is why every thread is about LLMs). 4chan in particular also has a huge bot problem now. It's hard to quantify, but if I found out there were more LLM posts than human ones, I wouldn't be surprised.

Irrespective of everyone's objective IQ, there's something about online discourse/interactions that compel oneself to act like a complete fucking moron, more so than they would IRL. This has always been the case--even during Usenet days, going by anecdotal evidence--but it's exacerbated nowadays what with the modern userbase--many of whom are simply seeking quick entertainment instead of enlightenment), and the algorithms that influence them. Instead of resigning to disregard the majority of users; i.e. normalfags, as niggercattle, I would instead be interested in efforts aimed at elevating them to a higher standard. There have been incidental efforts to do so on the part of privacy mindfulness, but it's primarily performative imo in the sense that they just follow along with it; they don't understand the underlying technologies and the reasons for needing to do something, it's just another personality trait to tack on. Perhaps we'll see a change out of necessity when Western governments collectively carpet-bomb the free Internet (for the sake of teh children, of course!).
