You have to look straight into the device, sit extremely still and have a misshapen head so the IR camera doesn't recognise you as human.

First of all if you are moving then the laser sees something moving larger than a mosquito and doesn't zap. There is also a camera (and IR diode) with basic image recognition to detect faces inside the plane of zapping.
