Surely sooner or later whtn GTK 5 comes out and GTK 3 goes the way of GTK 2 it will be forked right?
I find that barely fucking anything I use needs GTK 4 or can work without GTK 4 but if GTK3 stops getting maintenance updates I imagine there would be some group of people that would just fork it
I only know of CTK but I don't know if that will exist long term because it's just one guy atm

Stop being retarded and help the projects you use move to GTK4. I'll give you good reasons:
1. GPU accelerated rendering using Vulkan
2. Android backend
3. Actual real fractional scaling
4. Better input controls
5. Less bloated and clean separation of backends
6. Less GNOME-y, platform styles and widgets moved to platform libraries, so GTK is now pure and gnome, elementary and xapp can build on top of it

There's 0 reasons to keep 3 alive. Inkscape, Meld, Handbrake, Transmission and most gnome and elementary stuff moved to 4 already

That's worse for the developers that used GTK for being a cross-platform toolkit though. Nobody wants libadwaita on Android, for example, nor do they want it on Windows, or on KDE, etc.
Ideally more devs should switch to Qt.
>>
>>109364587
I'll keep using gtk2, gaynigger.
>>
>>109365584
How is that worse? If developers don't want libadwaita they don't have to. Handbrake and inkscape for example are cross platform and use no platform library.
>Qt
Or use one of the modern GUI that are not money hungry (slint, kotlin multiplatform, flutter). Qt is a bloated mess and they forced us to purchase a license at work because the open source one doesn't do LTS, it's rolling only
>>
>>109364367
GTK2 was already forked by someone on the devuan forums though

Yes but 99% of projects have migrated to GTK3

Would it be possible to rewrite a gtk3 back into gtk2? I have been meddling with gtk3 code, and i've not see any gtk2 code yet, maybe i could create custom versions of some gtk3 apps i use to port them back into gtk2 since i would really like to use gtk2 themes
>>
>>109364367
>crying over gtk3
Look at this retard, lmao.
Gtk2 had some value thanks to its good widgets and layout. Gtk3 was a pure trash. Everyone should port their projects from gtk3 to gtk4 or move from gtk entirely.
The only good thing about gtk 3 is that it can be consistently themed with qt unlike gtk4, but that's small price to pay for being not complete fucking garbage.

>GPU accelerated rendering using Vulkan
Are we back in 1992 where even basic GUIs needed GPU acceleration to run at an acceptable speed?
>>
>>109364367
gtk4 is literally the most used GUI toolkit on linux
what are you on about?
>>
>>109366564
You probably could but it'd be much simpler honestly to just port the gtk2 themes to gtk3 yourself
Less fiddling around with source code

Nothing in gtk4 or libadwaita prevents it from being themed, just nobody from Qt cares about uniformity anymore, especially when flutter, electron and others became popular

"Why use the extremely powerful and fast component of your computer to render stuff at 0.000000001% of the time and resources when you could use that other component that's slower and shared between all your other processed doing expensive calculations"
If you don't like it you can make them use opengl again, they improved that backend too and can now do fractional scaling as well
>>
>>109366069
>it's rolling only
Not really a problem. They aren't breaking things often.
>>
>>109366720
Hardware acceleration is important you dumb fuck. When Microsoft moved GDI applications to software render in Windows Vista everyone lost their shit calling it slow as fuck.
>>
>>109366069
>because the open source one doesn't do LTS, it's rolling only
Qt is ABI compatible inside major version. You can compile application with qt 6.0 and it will still work with latest Qt 6
>>
>>109366707
don't they launch a separate sandboxed process for every icon and image in gtk4 applications now?
>>
>>109367780
Gtk3 does this as well, they share the same image decoding libraries
>>
>>109367251
>>109367757
yes, that's how semver works, no breaking changes in minor versions. But the problem is security, they dont backport security fixes.
>>
>>109364367
Yes, CTK might take off but there's actually a lot of energy around reviving GTK 2 in Devuan aligned communities right now. There's even talks of a translation layer to make GTK 3 apps run in GTK 2.
>>109364587
I'd rather my GPU not be wasted on a fucking calculator.
>>109366564
Yes, they're planning on forking XFCE and a long list of software. Most of which doesn't even need to be ported, it's just a compiler flag like ENABLE_GTK2=true or something.
>>
>>109364367
Anything after GTK 2 is a wrongful abomination that should never have been created.

GTK = GIMP ToolKit
GIMP = GNU Image Manipulation Program
GNU = GNU's not Unix

GNU's Image Manipulation Program Toolkit

Do you all consider something that has been created for drawing images as good base for serious work like SAP in corpos?

If security is your concern, pick a language with managed memory.
>>
>>109366069
>because the open source one doesn't do LTS
You can just use the version KDE maintains if you want to freeload. Probably it is good that your work licenses it though. Businesses licensing it is the reason Qt can do open source at all.

>There's even talks of a translation layer to make GTK 3 apps run in GTK 2.
If that happens that would be really cool to the point I might actually try using it
I remmeber Stefan was writing something like that. and Yeah gtk2-ng seems to be quite active but in the beginning i figured if no one's going to write a gtk3 compatibility layer then what is the point, but hopefully something like that comes around and maybe some apps will switch back to supporting gtk2 build methods again...
CTK caught my eye as well.

GTK+ is a dead framework walking. The whole concept is wrong.
