How do we fix USB-C?

I knew people would start hating on USB-C when it started becoming the standard. This why meaningless government interventions like you see in the EU are stupid.

We don't.

good thing some retard mandated this shitty standard to be used in all phones

After having dealt with multiple loose USB-C connections I want to go back to micro usb. Ideally they'd have a standard that's both tight and unidirectional in the way you can plug it in.

Why do americans always seethe about the good parts of the EU but never the enforced gayness or chat control?

> Why do americans always seethe about the good parts of the EU but never the enforced gayness or chat control?
Nope, I am a Eurosceptic living in Europe.
I am not against useful regulation, and I am not advocating for the American capitalism.
However, we are regulating ourselves out of a future.
These laws are weaponized by big corporations to flood smaller, up and coming competitors with paperwork and legal overhead that only they can afford to navigate.
Here is an example: Microsoft actively lobbied for the DMA with the intent to handicap rivals like Apple and Google:
https://ec.europa.eu/info/law/better-regulation/have-your-say/initiatives/12418-Digital-Services-Act-package-ex-ante-regulatory-instrument-of-very-large-online-platforms-acting-as-gatekeepers/F2256709_en
And discussed by analysts here: https://cepa.org/article/europes-dma-a-protectionist-weapon/
TLDR; EU regulation is just a giant battle ground for Big US corporation to throw the book at one another while negatively effecting European businesses.

The obvious issue is the standard is basically useless if it only defines the ports and ignores the specs of the inside.

Also a very good point, but they can't say freeze what USB-C can do at the making of the law.

Pretty much a bad faith, This was happening far before the EU made it a mandate, the only one who wasn't interested in it was apple, even corporations like Nintendo were moving to USB-C as a standard even them and they are the apple of gaming.
>>
>>109366404
USB-C connectors and sockets are garbage. There's no excuse for having a higher failure rate than connectors designed 50 years ago.

Yes! The minute I show an exception to the rule, you grasp the straws and attack me with an Ad hominem. The industry was already for the most part moving to it as a standard way before the EU mandated it, you are making it seem that it's because of the EU instead of it being a meaningless enforcement. All you could have done is just not buy an iPhone and you would have one cable for all too. Even Apple's Macbooks used usb-c at that point.

All of this could've been avoided if the standard just mandated markings on the connectors describing the speed, whether it's for charging or data, whether it supports Thunderbolt, whether it does DP-Alt mode, etc. The ports typically have these markings, so why not the cables?

I always thought the old apple laptop sockets with built in magnets to keep them in place so there was no need for a deep socket was the superior design, we should go to a magnet based connection for all mobile devices and remove the giant hole that allows water and dirt and lint into the interior of the devices

usb-c got developed by Apple and Apple were the first to offer an USB-C only device.
Just that it was called thunderbolt and then later the USB dudes agreed to adopt Apples connector.

Micro usb is easier to solder than type C.
>>
>>109365974

The only way to fix it is to get rid of it. USB-C is the worst cable ever. EU communists made everyone's lives worse when they declared that only one standard should exist, and that it should be USB-C. These cables break after only two months of use. This has never happened with Micro-USB or Lightning cables.

This same logic can be applied to ethernet as well, except ethernet cables label their speeds on the cables themselves. Basically what >>109367461 is recommending to be done. It's a better idea than making yet another plug standard and going back to the age where you have to keep a box full of various different USB connectors and adapters.
>>
It's better than every cord before it. Except the 3.5mm jack, that one was always perfectly reliable

I've charged my phone and other devices with the same cable for 8 years at least and it's still in perfect condition. You might just be a retarded gorilla if you break cables ever 2 months.

>>109367634
40Gbps on a 3m cable is potentially stretching it, I'm not saying it's impossible or anything but you're in the area where you cannot confidently believe that you buy the cable and it just works, despite what the specs say. You might buy it and find out it just doesn't work with your devices, or it works unreliably if you actually need the 40Gbps connection. This is kind of the problem.

>>109367507
This is a lie, USB-C was developed by the USB forum. Apple is a member but it was Intel and a few other companies who took the lead on USB-C.

>>109365974
I've seen 3 main problems:
1. Lack of proper labeling and USB standards after like the baseline USB3 being a complete fucking mess. Different signaling rates, different power transfer capabilities, cables branded for display signal use, thunderbolt this, thunderbolt that, it's a fucking mess.
2. Lack of a good way to determine cable quality, any shop you go to has shitloads of USB-C cables available, all from random brands you have never heard of, and it's impossible to tell which are trustworthy and live up to their spec and which aren't. Not sure how to solve this, testing & some sort of official approval stamp? Tricky
3. Lack of QA / reliability in the connector, kind of related to point #2, I've had cables that are extremely unreliable. Like I have a device connected to a dock and barely touching the connector can make the screen blank out, or the USB2.0 connection for peripherals drops and so on. I've had the bad luck to have a dodgy connector like this on a Dell dock with a captive cable, so the whole thing is rather useless because the connector is unreliable.

There are many, super tiny contacts in there but at the same time the connector isn't super stable and has a lot of wiggle.

Or, get this, not every piece of hardware ships with the same quality because the USB-C standard doesn't require it. Your data point of 1 is not relevant. They aren't the gorilla they are just unlucky, in a situation where luck should play no role at all.
Fucking morons.

It will never not be amusing to think there are people that are literally incapable of ascertaining that the black one is likely incapable of thunderbolt and it's impossible to tell the difference between these two cables.
>>
>>109367887
They really should be labeled though. This problem isn't specific to USB C, but it's annoying going through several identical cables trying to find one that can do data transfer, not just charging. Your example there is obvious, but in most cases cords with different functions look exactly the same.
>>
>>109367909
>but in most cases cords with different functions look exactly the same.
They don't tho, that's the thing.
They should be labeled but personally I've had little issues determining what cable is which. Something like a 20gb cable feels and sometimes looks way different than a basic USB 2.0 cable.
There 20 conductors is a high speed cable. You can feel that in how stiff the cable is. Sometimes you can see it as they coil the conductors internally.

There should be a better way to determine but it's not nearly as bad people make it out to be.

>>109367696

So true, Nintendo is known for their expensive consoles that people buy as status symbols since there are no games to play on them. I am more talking about ascetics aspects of apple.
Nintendo is very similar to that, you know the console, everyone knows Nintendo (Not litterally) it's bigger than it's peers and has a bigger well known identity, and if you don't know that then you sure know Mario. You really can't say that about Xbox or Playstation.
>>
>>109368747
In that sense, Nintendo is more like the Disney of gaming. Very IP-focused, and extremely protective of said IPs. Often what people think of when they think about video games, like how Disney is often what people think of when they think of animated films.
