I first got a zsa moonlander, which was a big mistake, very bulky and the red thumb buttons made me angry, very ugly thing. Then I got the zsa voyager, on which I'm typing right now actually.

Typing on the voyager is overall a very good experience, butttttttt

I can't really explain it, but I'll try my best to do so.... somehow split keyboards just irritate me, maybe it's the way they look, they way they somehow make your desk look like a mess (especially the f'n cables! lord!) and also even though I am the only person looking at it, I feel as if it doesn't match with how I perceive myself. It looks like a contraption for the infirm, and the extremely nerdy. I just don't really see myself that way, although I'm big on ergonomics.

So I considered going back to a regular keyboard. A nice clean looking one without wires and without funky design. Something that you would see on the desk of a serious person, not gale bettinger.

Can anyone relate and has anyone gone through this process? Please let me know.
>>
I never had a split-kb but I previously got myself an ergo kb and later went back to typing on a laptop
I realised that your habits matter more than your hardware
Look at your posture, look at your wrist position. You can either change them, or add ergo-crutches to "fix" whatever issues you have without actually fixing anything
>>
>>109366120
even if they did fix something, I feel it's not worth sacrificing your self respect

i got a trackball and im considering getting an alyexpress fake charrybird. some key combos are hard now because of the left handed trackball. say super+scroll etc. not sure if will help me. i also find it annoying moving my hand off the mouse. when filling forms and stuff so im thinking getting thge trackball on the right side of the keyboard for fine movements when typing and kjeeping the standalone on the left for other shit
>>
>>109366139
all these weird paraphernalia will eat away at how you perceive yourself, one day you will wake up and recognize you hate what you've become
>>
>>109366143
man the trackball has been nice as fuck. i didn't get it for some bs ergo but because i was too lazy to clean up my desk and use a regular mouse . i use it on the left because as a left handed person i never felt comfortable using a mouse on the left, but with the ball, i am home.

but yeah im, doubting split shit keyboards. i just use microsoft office keyboards

I have the Q8 Pro, which is very similar but with less keys. It took about a week to get accustomed to the space bars and to stop accidentally hitting one of the special keys. It rarely happens now. The only thing I really dislike is that the ESC key is next to the 1 key, making it very easy to accidentally hit. The layout you posted puts ESC on the function row, which avoids the problem.

I used an Ergodox for a few years at home for wrist issues from a lot of computer use but I used a laptop at work with its keyboard. Was not really a fan of how bulky the Ergodox was with its cabling and although I was 99% used to the ortholinear keys and layout, that 1% of operating friction was annoying. Aesthetically I always liked human-centered design versus designs that are purely aesthetic e.g. knobs and buttons in cars rather than touchscreens. Even then, QWERTY is kind of unergonomic and when I switched to DVORAK for a while (RIP JCD), while it was superior from an ergonomic view it wasn't practical.

That said I use a Razer Joro (though I think I would prefer a Logitech MX Mini because Razer software still stinks and the Logitech layout seems a little more logical) because it's a thin keyboard that helps reduce wrist flex when combined with the wrist rests from the Ergodox while at the same time looks a lot less bulky. Hopefully I won't have to bust out the Ergodox again but I'm keeping it in case.
>>
>>109366925
It prevents ulnar deviation, actually. You can type on it and keep your wrists straight. You would have to do the same thing with a split keyboard if you were keeping both halves directly in front of you instead of shoulder-width apart.

You are a lot more self-conscious than is warranted here. You're inventing perceptions someone might have about you, and then letting that decide how you have your room set up.
It's just a keyboard. It has no connection to human dignity or self respect. Dignity is not downstream from keyboard form factor.

The fact that the function row indicated that it's back-lit is really the only thing it has going for it. If I'm going to care that much about how my keyboard looks, I might as well wear lipstick and start talking like a woman. Standard, full-size, normal profile keyboards with abs plastic are good enough, but I do like keyboards with extra keys to the left, like the k55, the g15, and some keychrons, so I can have up and down arrow keys for my left hand and have shift-tab on one key.

I don't want to. The only reason I'd have to turn the lights on is if I can't see the keyboard in my peripheral vision. I use a full size, and only my right hand stays perpendicular to the keyboard. Without light from the keyboard, I need a to turn a light on so I'm not missing the keys I need when I go from the mouse back to the keyboard. I keep my mouse straight out from my left hand. I spend half of the time on my computer lazily slouched in my chair, sitting with the lower half of my back.

I'm using the exact keyboard in that image, actually, a Kinesis Freestyle 2. They're nothing special (no QMK, membrane keyboard), but I'd recommend it to anybody that just wants to try out a split keyboard that isn't meme shit with a bunch of layers, but also doesn't want to spend much on something they aren't sure is actually going to fix their issues.

Since Kinesis is a name brand in ergo keyboards, tons of wagies buy 'em (or get them through their company), try em out, and sell em for cheap (you can find them as office surplus too, I'm sure). I got a Freestyle 2 with the accessory kit (which would normally cost $150) for $40 that looked like it was unused, still in the original packaging and everything.

Personally, it helped the major wrist pain issues I had using a normal keyboard. The pain on the outside of my right hand flared up a bit when I switched to it, but I think once my hands got used to it that went away too.

it's a godsend for tall/large people. being able to have my arms extended naturally forward and have the keys right there is how it should be. the thumbcluster, having a few options besides space for your most agile digit is a warm welcome as well.

the only thing i truly miss and required more effort than i thought, is using the keyboard as a toolbox for lets say photoshop. a flat full keyed keyboard like the old apple aluminium was great, where you slide your fingers blindy over the letters, knowing where everything is. impossible on a split or even comfortably on most mechanical keyboards.

i have a long cable between both parts, which means i can extend them straight towards the back of my desk. this means no cable horizontally between them.

Here's a tip I've found incredibly useful, ask:

"What is the long term gain of going out of the standard."

For example, i thought 2 monitors would "increase productivity", it is a non-standard approach - it never increased anything other than visual distractions. (this would be different if you were a student or need reference material)

I thought going keto would make me healthier, it helped me lose >40kg but it wasn't maintainable and added a lot of friction, what's the standard diet for losing weight? Before people started basically lying on youtube videos for ad revenue it was cut out the fat and walk more, found it very easy to maintain with next to no fat + walking, near 0 friction, I'm lighter than I've ever been. (no fat + walking is what professional body builders do for contest prep, so it works)

I've been dabbling with Linux for 20 years, but what have i always received for going out of the standard? Friction. I'm not a "tinkerer" and just want a stable system that doesn't break in weird ways - turns out windows IoT LTSC is perfect for that. (and the previous branches stretching back to 2016 LTSB).

What's the long term gain for a split keyboard? That when you're typing it is >5%~ more efficient/faster? Now you're probably saddled with a higher entry cost, higher repair cost, a little bit of worry niggling at the back of your mind, non-standard drivers, compatibility?

I bought a mech keyboard in 2015~ because i wanted increased reliability in keystrokes (because i was going fucking balls to the wall in OSRS and wanted tick-perfect 16 hour sessions), it's still good today. Just something to consider and a few examples. Sometimes the standard is fine.
