Why can't they just make it a login website like Geforce now? Why does anyone have to buy a playstation?

You are forgetting a detail platform security, this is why valve is doing the steam deck and steam machines, they don't want to be on someones else's turf, Devices are like land and an entry point, if you control that you establish dominance that competition can't take away form you.
>>
>>109366880
It will come to that eventually. They just can't do that transition too fast or people would complain. Remember the backlash when Microsoft said Xbox would be digital only? Now with Playstation most people don't even care

Because non-exclusive/multiplatform games exist. Selling your locked down proprietary device, even at a loss, will (in theory) result in more sales because tje customer is far more likely to buy the new third party games from you instead of buying another machine for the same game(s). If you switch to just being a store on PC then you face the risk of competition. On PC you're competing to sell individual games, with consoles you're competing to sell entire libraries.
>>
>>109367700
On top of this, a cloud based game streaming system would mean having to house, maintain, and operate all the hardware instead of offloading that responsibility onto the customer. It's clear that they'll eventually go the route of game streaming with proprietary "consoles" that can only access their respective company's services, but the infrastructure to get away with something like that isn't ready.

Because the difference between an internet connection capable of downloading GTAVI and one capable of streaming GTAVI is vast.
And if you're in the unlucky camp of not having good enough internet for game streaming, then you're just fucked. There is literally nothing that you can do besides moving houses and hoping to get lucky with the next one, and even then the route your internet goes from your house to the Xbox Cloud or Geforce Now datacentre can change at any time.
Microsoft has the data about all this, and it's the reason why they haven't gone all in on cloud gaming yet. And there is literally nothing they can do to fix this situation.

The issue with game streaming isn't bandwidth, it's latency. If you can stream a video from any website or service without buffering, then you can stream a game at the same resolution no problem. You could have sub-standard bandwidth and beat a modern game through game streaming in less time than it takes to download it.
>>
All of a sudden, datacenters need more fiber optic cables and will buy it all in droves.
So you will own no fiber optic cables either.
>>
>>109368296
It's not just latency, it's jitter.
Since streamed games can't buffer the video significantly, any spikes in latency are noticed and felt immediately with either lag or the image quality falling off a cliff.
Video services like Youtube and Netflix have a few second buffer just in case there's a momentary connection issue, and it's there by default for a reason.

Xbox and PlayStation are turbonormie consoles. They have virtually no games, people just buy them as a status symbol, maybe play the latest FIFA. When Nintendo tries doing it, expect huge backlash from the autistic fanbase
>>
Still bugs me that all these datacenters will be "AI, AI, AI, temporarily switch off AI to stream vidya for someone, AI, AI, AI, etc"
>>
>>109366880
PCs exist and no one has a problem buying digital only games.

$600,000 currently would buy your about 148 ounces of gold. In 1970 an ounce of gold was $35, so that means to have the same purchasing power (in terms of gold) in 1970 you would need $5,180, and given the minimum wage of $1.60 per hour at the time, that means you would need to work 3,238 hours so assuming a regular 8 hour workday that's 405 days so assuming a 5 day work week working 48 weeks per year that comes out to ~1.7 years. So that means a random boomer working a minimum wage job in 1970 (that he got with a high school diploma and a firm handshake) was earning the equivalent of about $353,000/year, so ultimately we get down to the fact that an unskilled boomer making minimum wage made about 60% of what a zoomer believes is required to be successful, whereas a zoomer today making minimum wage, were he lucky enough to even get full time employment, at the federal minimum wage of $7.25/hr would make ~$14k/year. To make that boomer minimum wage of $353k/year would require he earn about $184 per hour. AI tells me that in 1970 a salary of $9,870.00 was considered to be pretty good, and given the price of gold at $35/oz, that comes out to a salary of 282 ounces of gold ($1,143,510.00) per annum. It appears the zoomer vastly underestimates what financially successful is.

Interesting.

Makes sense. There's even PC cross play on a lot of titles now. I really don't see any point to having those consoles besides showing them off but I don't want those ugly nigger boxes in my house so I see no reason to buy.
>>
>>109368551
Holy fucking shit, things are even much worse than I thought. Boomers had it so good. Millenial here stressing the fuck out about A.I. coming for our jobs.
>>
>>109368472
That's precisely my point in mentioning the lack of infrastructure earlier and explicitly stating 'without buffering' in the post you replied to. We're probably about a decade away from console makers investing in their game streaming data centers and at least another decade after that for the overall infrastructure of ISP to be capable of providing low enough latency to make the services viable in enough regions.
>>
>>109368592
"""AI""" isn't coming for the working joe's jobs, just the middle class white collar pencil pushers. Blue collar jobs will be safe for quite some time.
>>
>>109366880
Having dedicated hardware sets a standard for performance and also locks you into that brand's ecosystem.
>>
>>109368592
Yeah, it's shocking. And hell, even if you go by the government's official numbers, which we all know are utter bullshit, a boomer making minimum wage made at least twice as much as a zoomer making minimum wage. Never mind how much easier they had it in absolutely every way. Even the laziest boomer could stroll into a factory and get a job making ample money to buy a house and multiple cars and recreational vehicles and support a large family on that single income and just coast along for decades doing fuck all and never a financial worry.

As to the OP, they just want money from all angles, Gaming as a subscription, but also selling you propriety bullshit they can brick at their leisure.

>>109368698
Considering offshoring of industry, outsourcing, and the infinite influx of foreigners, I wouldn't be so sure.
>>
>>109368985
The foreign threat is an entirely separate issue. Just as valid, but not relevant to the current conversation.
