Anybody thinking of getting Masters or PhD?
>>
After using Claude for a few months at work I'm left wondering how many of us will have a job in 5 years.
>>
>>109370947
I'm starting my bachelors in computer science next year
>>
>>109370984
not many I suspect, and not as well paid as we are today. I think out jobs will fundamentally change, but I'm not sure how. of course some people will manage agents and stuff, but that's assuming things will be done the same way they are done today, and not (almost) fully automated.
who knows what comes next. judging by how LLMs are even solving some math conjectures, it looks like they will change our society as a whole. the way we learn (it's already happening), resource management, knowledge tools, communications (they are fed from out written communications, so tech bros either impose full surveillance on everyone or break the internet), ...
>>
>>109371069
We will probably see a significant collapse of white collar jobs and literal riots before governments steps in. Shit looks bleak.

This is all good. Good stuff. Frees up unproductive labor to do productive things. LLMs improve the world as a whole.
>b-but where will i work
Other places, doing other things for society.
>>
>>109371084
who knows, anon. but considering that the tech bros that control the bigger language models are all jewish and the CEOs of their companies are indians, and they are in a war against open-source models... you can kind of see where things are going (they don't want competition and don't want the common man to use similar tools that are not under their control).
on the other hand, not all capitalists benefit from all of this, so it might even end in a civil war if these greedy fuckers don't realize that hyperconcentration of wealth in the hands of a few people destroys capitalism itself.
the worst part of this all is that we built all of this for them to benefit while they plan on destroying the middle class.
I might be too much of a doomer and things might not end this badly, but if you've read history books, you'd know that if leaders (politicians, kings, ...) don't act in time, conflicts and wars are bound to happen...

dynamic programming, a technique used to efficiently calculate a desired result by breaking the problem down to subproblems and then using those answers to build the next answer in the chain.
It's notoriously difficult to wrap your head around, there's tons of problem variations, and if you don't do it efficiently your code will blow up exponentially in time complexity.

So an easy example is lets say you have a grid of m rows and n columns. You start at the top left (0, 0), your goal is to move to the final cell, and you can only move down or right. How many different paths can you take?
# m = 4, n = 3
# S is start (0, 0), E is end (3, 2)
S X X
X X E

Well it takes 1 step to get to 0,0, and if you notice you can only move down or right, that means each cell in the top row only has 1 path, and each cell in the leftmost column also only has one path. so now you have
1 1 1
1 X X
1 X X
1 X E

So how many paths can you take to get to 1, 1? Well you could go from the cell to the left, or the cell above. So the number of paths you could take to get to 1,1 is (leftPaths + upPaths), so 2. In fact you can calculate all results like this. The formula used to calculate this result is called the recurrence relation. So if you have a grid called dp to store your answers, the answer to any row (r) and column (c) is
dp[r][c] = dp[r - 1][c] + dp[r][c - 1]

filled out our solution is
1 1 1
1 2 3
1 3 6
1 4 10

so 10 paths.

I don't like using AI at work. I enjoyed programming and that shit's gone. I do like being able to create an android app that fits my needs with little effort though.
At this point I think I can either
>stay at my current job slacking off as long as I can
>change fields
>fully embrace AI and try to make a product of my own
Any tips?

Anyone here ever worked as a Bob?
About 10 years ago, right out of university, I got hired as a "consultant" for agile best practices. Except most of my teams weren't developers, I was coaching lawyers, finance, IT, across a 40-person office. My job was to run "sprints" with each team lead, figure out what was going on, and help them deliver, because upper management said everyone was just stalling.
Turns out the real problem was people were expected to do their normal 8-hour workload and find time for extra "side projects." Nobody wants side projects after an 8-hour shift, so that setup was never going to work.
I tried explaining this to management and suggested they hire more staff or pay for extra hours. Upper management got visibly annoyed and kept pushing back.
For the first 6 months or so, they kept up the charade about "improving delivery." Then they finally dropped the act and straight up asked me to build a list of non-essential staff.
>mfw I realized I was a Bob
I never ended up making the list because I got a full-time job at another company.
I want to try a job like this again one day I want to do a job like this again.
Also after I quit I found out they had a nickname for me, "Robot", because I was very serious and emotionless

Maybe a piece of that in vulnerability identification. Vuln management teams have been shit for years so having something actually do the job is considered revolutionary. Job is literally scan device (not implement fixes) and they can't even be arsed to do that.

I assume they discovered some months ago that their models can run pentests and code audits, so they probably threw more resources to train them for cybersec. They know or realized that there is a lot of money in the industry so it's a new niche for them, and they are pushing it hard. Something similar is going on with math research.
But while models are getting bigger and bigger, apparently there are no new advancements. And it seems to show, since the bubble seems to be bursting.
>>
>>109376100
Ok but this is all shit that companies who currently survive mostly on speculative investment rather than pure profit claim. Why should I believe them?
>>
>>109376124
>Why should I believe them?
Believe what? That they are good at finding vulns? You can see the spike in number of published vulnerabilities/CVE IDs during the last couple of months. The math stuff? Look at all those "chatgpt/fable disproved X conjecture". The problem is that they won't be able to make much money from all of that unless they sell to governments or some shit, and that's a huge can of worms LMAO. Plus, the very fact that their models can be used as tools to find stuff means there is less stuff to discover over time...

if you make faang money then it's a wash compared to other markets. sure your rent is massive but you're earning 3x what people in flyover country make, and many goods such as clothes or electronics are the same price everywhere (giving you an edge for anything that comes after rent), so if you game it right you can still come out ahead.

If I was 20 years younger I'd say take the initiative, do meetings with the team and propose a solution since you are aware of difficulties and are supposedly smart.
But now I say fuck it, keep your head low, do what's asked and make your contribution known. Psychopath managers don't like when their slaves forget themselves and step out of line.

Those managers can't take an ounce of well laid out criticism. They see it as a threat when most teams are built off of the backs of cooperative environments. My last manager was like this until shit tanked and he among 3 other shit bags got fired ie his lazy friends.

Shit, another round of layoffs hit the company I work for. Seems like we have layoffs every 4-5 months now. There's nowhere to go. Even back-breaking blue collar jobs for minimum wage and with mandatory unpaid overtime have no shortage of candidates willing to work for peanuts just to survive a little bit longer. I wonder if this is how people in the USSR felt when the system reached its terminal phase and started to crumble all around them.

I am doing those things, it doesn't help me to not worry. >>
>>109385212
What's wrong with a mortgage? It's about 1/3 the average rent, at least in my area. It's basically immune to fluctuations unless I want to lower it and I can play against the amortization table and if everything goes well, it'll be gone in 6 years anyway. The mortgage isn't really the problem, it's more about life just being an unending string of shit to do and manage, and the existential threat of generalized "shit I can't account for." I guess if I went out on my ass I'd have at least a year to figure something out insofar as the mortgage goes, and it beats renting by a few country miles, at least for my situation.

I need to hire a few software engineers. Problem is, last time we did this was 1 year ago and we didn't allow AI, but now I want them to use it. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations of what we could do?

I was thinking of giving them a module with a multiple files with a mix of good, wrong and inefficient code and ask them to refactor, fix bugs and implement some new feature. Also, I was thinking of giving them an AGENTS.md that made wrong code on purpose to see if they'd check it, but that may be too asshole-y. What do you guys think?
>>
>>109385091
I will use AI to kill you instead.
>>
>>109385283
Just ask them to build a full stack application of their choosing, and watch them work with the agent. Should tell you everything you need to know.
>>
>>109377301
Going from gov to contractor is a system shock because often the contractors are taking up the shitslack part of your field, which you'll be expected to just do expertly. Maybe you can or maybe it's different in your field but I'm contracting now and I'd do anything to get a gov position and cling to that sweet, sweet, stability. Imo don't give it up.
>>
>>109385315
Just different degrees of parasite. Going from contractor to b2b is another system shock, same with b2b to b2c.

If not American:
-only invite people with a BSc/MSc in CS or related
-5+ yoe (verifiable)
-do a simple programming test to start with
-do a reasoning test in an existing application
-make them refactor code with AI and reason about what got improved and why
-make them create a simple fullstack app from scratch with AI and watch them reason about architectural decisions

If American:
-only invite people with a BSc/MSc from a good uni in the US/UK/Europe/China (NOT India/Canada)
-5-7+ yoe
-make them do a leetcode light/medium
-do a reasoning test in an existing application
-ask some small system design questions
-make them create a simple fullstack app from scratch with AI and watch them reason about architectural decisions
>>
>>109385311
But that's not enough. If I do that I won't see if they can read and understand existing code, and check that the AI didn't break something that used to work.
>>
>>109385357
Agreed. In the grand scheme of things, the best jobs are the ones that pay the most for the least amount of effort. Whatever has the best E:P ratio is king, and gov jobs are usually the best. Pay typically isn't the highest but at least from my experience you can telework and pass emails around for 101k a year assuming your steps are in.

>What's wrong with a mortgage?
You're a slave to your bank now.
Also, houses always have issues.
And prices are starting to fall, so if you bought in the last ~5 years, so might end up "losing" money (if you sell).

>it's more about life just being an unending string of shit to do and manage, and the existential threat of generalized "shit I can't account for.
I agree, yeah. Shit fucking sucks, but maybe try doing things easier to yourself? Like, have bills get paid automatically through your credit cards, automate stuff at home so they waste less of your time, etc.

I also didn't realize something from your previous post
>I don't like side hustling but I do get tipped beer money per regularly by drawing portraits in a "draw me" subreddit.
This seems like a waste of time. Unless you enjoy it, of course.

Anyway, take my opinion with a grain of salt. I'm no authority, I'm just some random retard
>>
>>109385537
You're a slave no matter what though, unless there's some hidden path to having a stable home that doesn't involve paying for it, or just living with someone else who pays for it? Either you rent something and you're a slave to the landlord or you mortgage it and you're on the hook until it's paid. At least mortgages end and the only recurring payment is yearly tax assessments. As for issues, I mean, there's always issues, with everything. From my experience I'd rather tackle the issue of replacing my carpets than tackle the issue of my apartment neighbor packing 9 people into a 2 bedroom apartment. Besides that, who cares about "losing money" on a house? I'm not speculating on it, I want it to live in, resale means practically nothing to me. What should people be doing instead, then?
>>
>>109385486
I think it's worth noting that the p(unicorn) is actually higher in the pool of no degree applicants than degree'd applicants even if the p(unhireable) is also higher. Something to think about.
>>
>>109385664
I'd argue that a genius is more likely to get a degree since it's very easy for them.
>>
>>109385626
I actually agree with you on everything, it's just that the alternative for a house would be to save as much as possible, buy some cheap thing and build from there on.
And, yeah, we are slaves to banks, employers, clients, the system... Nothing to do with that. I guess the less slavery thing would be some passive business that doesn't require Mich maintenance, but even then has its costs and worries
>>
>>109385691

>>
>>109385708
These days no one needs a unicorn who can't work with other people.
>>
>>109385718
We might actually be entering the days where that's the optimal configuration. Solo end to end product engineers.
>>
>>109385703
You're right, if I had a chance to get a do over I would have spent more time saving and tried to knock out a bigger chunk of this house right from the beginning, rather than just cover the costs of going under the mortgage. At least I can be a hermit while working and throw all the available cash at the house and maybe get out from underneath the biggest payment every month...but then there's water, lights, Internet, food etc to cover every month, it just never ends. If I knew some secret to passive income I'd share it, all I can think of in that regard is wrapped up in streaming or patreon culture, to just be someone that people pay to exist, but that's just another job. Either that or invent something, or invest aggressively until you have an account that pays dividends enough to cover monthly expenses. No clue, we all just plug leaks in our boats until it's time to die I guess, lol.

Every time there are layoffs they assign the survivors to the team I work in. We have 13 people now and 3 managers. Our leadership gives conflicting and contradictory orders, changes priorities all the time, argues among themselves openly and doesn't take responsibility for anything. They do however band together immediately when any of us tries to criticise any of them even a little bit, no matter how valid and polite this criticism may be.

I’m worried about society. I recently took up AA online (I’m a stress drinker) and the normies are suffering financially no matter the social class or jobs. mortgages, bills, women leaving with the kids, delaying retirements, etc.

I predict increases in citizen-to-citizen theft and fraud just to keep afloat before the riots and roving gangs of future komissars become normalized. There’s no way all the DEI hires i used to work with SV are thriving. Everyone is being bled dry right now but putting up the best appearances right now.

The golden years of my tech career started over a decade ago and that feeling of optimism is gone now. It doesn’t matter how hard you work now, the larger plot is unfolding on top of us all.

>the larger plot is unfolding on top of us all
our parents and their parents built their entire economy on boons from the world wars and industrial revolution, and then kicked the can down for decades on a pyramid scheme and using immigrants and globalization as alternatives to modern slave labor. at this point, we can't really kick the can anymore, so either we all eat the shit sandwich that our parents doomed us to (while they get to die, scot-free), or we begin another set of world wars that will determine which countries will have to eat everyone's shit sandwich.

to be honest, I don't think there is a solution besides war. We are simply doomed. The few that make it to the upper class will be able to successfully hoard and accumulate wealth and live decent lives, while the other classes will all get dissolved into one big slave class that has no rights, freedoms, or ability to maneuver upward in society, in a decaying and negative economy.

i was about to say /lmg/ might not be the best place as there isn't too much agentic content but compared to the smooth brain nonsense that is /vcg/ they probably have qwen3.5 and gemma 4 workflows that outperform the former

>ai providers are incentivized to make their software usable by literal 70IQ smoothbrains, it will start the agents and all that shit for you
This is what I say every time C suite boomers push for AI training.
I was really good at using 2025 Cursor, I knew just how to coax the AI into writing legible code. In 2026, all of that is possible with "change the backend to do x instead of y".

Nice quads lol. Nobody is getting out of the dystopian shit festival. The issue in America is that our priorities are so out of whack and our politics are so utterly fucked. If I were a Gen Alpha or a late Gen Z, yeah, I'd be a fucking NEET too, the rat race is looking less and less interesting each year. I fully expect an entire subset of the population to collectively wake up and check out of bothering to pay for credit and debt, bills, and rent/mortgage, and instead spend their limited time drinking and doing drugs and maybe achieving some sliver of happiness or hedonistic pleasure, rather than chasing an increasingly impossible metric in a game people know they can't win?

I've even hears they want the population to decrease. It means less people to deal with and more resources per person. And in the future, when the earth is resurce starved, that may be all we can afford to keep.

The job market will unironically recover as soon as the Russo-Ukrainian war ends, it's obvious, it's not a coincidence that the job market went down almost exactly after the war started, what the hell are you doing if you're not trying to end the war

They gave us a bunch of WFH "days" that you can "book off" but I've been going through them like crazy just because of so much "yeah fuck work" scenarios. Maybe it's bad for me, but I'm just banking on getting fired or quitting before winter. I'd rather use all of them up before I quit/get fired then get fired/quit and it's pretty much useless to me.

>>
>>109392568
>companies have gone all in on Indians + AI.
ngl it's depressing to see how much of a dip the quality of our products and projects have been but nobody cares because they're forcing overtime on interior staff to catch things up otherwise they threaten with the layoffs. It's a screwed if they do, screwed if they don't scenario. even if it is a dip executives don't fucking care anyway. I wonder when they'll really start being like "oh fuck we gotta stop being retarded". Maybe after this wave rides their golden parachute?
>>
>>109392568
I don't think Indians are nearly as big of a problem, especially since the job market going to shit is not just a US thing, and not even limited to the SWE
>>
>>109392813
one thing I notice is they value speed over quality. maybe my company just hired the cheapest consulting firms.
>>
>>109392813

Of course it is, like 30% of American corporate jobs are currently sitting in India being grifted away. We could be at full employment and keeping American wealth/income from getting cycled out of our economy entirely.
>>
Job stealing Indians are based and it's hilarious watching liberal globalism backfire and blow up in the face of its white-collar class advocates.
>>
>>109392867
umm sweetie it is not how that works since indians are not a cultural fit for HR and management roles and women are anyway diverse by definition :)

hot stinky curry diarrhea gets only poured down the collars of white guys who are already doing 99% of the meaningful work :)

I love when retards get hired into leadership positions, especially ones like "Controller".
6 months in and the honey moon phase ends. Retard e-mails me why something wasn't done. I told him that the entire e-mail was for him to do as I don't have access to the bank.
Every hour on the hour since he tried throwing me under the bus I have e-mailed "Just waiting for you to complete your portion of the job, people don't have access to the bank until you do." and copied the president of the company like he did on his initial e-mail but since removed him on all e-mails following.
I love professionally humiliating people who don't even take the initiative to read or even attempt to do their own job.

Wow anon, you're actually weak. Tell people you will get to it when you can and when 5pm hits you're out. Don't look at teams or email notifications. Deal with it next day. When your manager says you can't just leave at 5pm, say you had to take a mental health break because he's demanding too much and you think you need to step away right now too. Do that every time he questions your decisions while the senior is out
