It was an odd time. The PC was on its way to becoming *the* computer but everything was still basically DOS. Windows was still dogshit. Even then, the future was still open. It could go any way.Apple had the Mac but it was a business machine and very expensive. They were still supporting the 8-bit Apple II and 16-bit IIGS but no one expected that to last. Apple basically didn't give a shit about the home market and everyone knew it. Bad decisions from bad management they wouldn't get out from under until Jobs returned and transitioned them into portable devices.Atari and Commodore were still relevant and even had new models on the horizon, while still supporting their old 8 bit machines too. They were home machines built for gaming and multimedia. They had the best graphics and sound tech you could cheaply get but man were they being run by the worst corpo suit shitheads in the industry. They made Apple's management look competent. PCs were still mostly business machines, unless they supported Tandy graphics/sounds. 3rd party cards were still very new. AdLib and Roland had only hit the market in 87 and SoundBlaster had just come out in 89. VGA was also pretty new, also debuting in 87. The 486 had also just dropped and was just starting to appear in PCs. Windows 3.0 also hit in '90. While these technologies were available they were not common yet.Just a few years later it was a very different landscape. Atari had dropped out of the computer market and Commodore was staring down bankruptcy. Apple was sliding further into irrelevancy, desperately trying hold on. This would ultimately fail due to the underwhelming PowerPC transition and 'Copland' OS disaster.Meanwhile the PC was king. Windows 3.0 and 3.1 had changed the game. PCs now had a real GUI and 95 was on the horizon. They also took over gaming, with titles like Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and X-Wing showing what it could do.
>>109392289One of the stranger artifacts I've run across from the early '90s is an build of the linux kernel as a DOS TSR for the purposes of providing DOS programs with a freely licensed TCP stack.
>>109392680>t. guy who was actually thereAll true.PCs were somewhat garbage in 1990, but they were cheap/flexible garbage. PCs could be bought barebones. You could upgrade or forgo specific components. A PC running Lotus 123 for the finance dept maybe might not have a sound card or even a mouse. Some could run windows 3 some couldn't. It was a shitshow but alternatives were expensive or, as you mentioned, going down the toilet due to mismanagement/etc.
Just got back from the Library, found all kinds of cool books about ancient machines using the computer catalog.

>>109380672Dont forget rejecting color monitors because monochrome is "better on the eyes". Yes this apparently really happened.
>>109394299This wasn’t stupid if you compare EGA to a monochrome Mac
>>109394299There is actually a method to the madness. Monochrome CRTs don't use a shadow mask to separate the pixels. This allows for a sharper image. They effectively have infinite resolution and can match the source images resolution. Color CRTs have to separate the pixels using a shadow mask or (for Trinitrons) an aperture grill. This means that the color display likely has a different resolution than the source image. This can cause a moire effect or other types of blurriness. Monochrome displays could also have much brighter intensities, which could make viewing easier in a bright office for example. So, they did in fact reduce eye strain and that kind of thing.

>>109395163Huh this is my first time hearing that they had infinity resolution. Is the shadow mask really that big of a deal?
>>109394299if you've actually seen a monochrome crt and compared it to an old colour crt with a fat dot pitch you'd understand whyi used to own a little portable 4" black and white television, and sometimes played my playstation on it. the picture was sharp as fuck since b/w screens have no mask, it's just one solid coating of phosphor. i'd say the picture was sharper than the 14" colour television i also hadportable colour televisions had hilariously low resolutions since their dot mask wasn't any smaller than a regular tv's. at one point i had a 6" colour portable but i rarely used it because the resolution was terrible. good enough for tv shows i suppose but good luck reading any text on it
>>109397134it's not infinite, the screen resolution is indefinite, in that it's just a uniform phosphor coating with no inherent resolution limitations, but the driving circuitry still can only handle as many lines as it was designed for. the horizontal resolution can be much greater than colour displays of the same size
Take a look at this close up. See all of that black between the red, green, and blue bars/dots? That is the shadow mask. A shadow mask is a metal sheet with a bunch of holes in it. It can significantly reduce the brightness of the display vs a monochrome one because the sheet is blocking a significant amount of the electron guns' beam. This means less energy hits less phosphor and it don't glow as brightly. It also means that the display has a fixed number of pixels compared to monochrome, as >>109397203 did a better job of explaining then my first attempt.Early color TVs had poor brightness because of this. We are talking 85% of the beam blocked. It took them years to advance the technology to solve this problem. It was not a simple fix either. It required a combination of things. Monochrome CRTs only need a single electron gun and had no mask at all but color ones need three guns and a mask. Keeping these focused across the entire screen so the correct gun hit the proper phosphor dot was hell. That is why early CRTs had such a pronounced curve. They looked like a fishbowl. This was to help with hitting the corners of the screen while staying focused. The advent of the 'slot mask' (left image) instead of the triad of dots (right image) helped. You now had three large 'bars' of color instead of dots so the brightness increased. They also used higher power electron guns mounted in a row (instead of a cluster of three) and more advanced focusing systems to make sure that the beams were properly on target and focused to allow maximum brightness through the mask. So, the brightness issue was much improved but you still had the resolution issue. As >>109397170 shows, even shitty, tiny monochrome displays can handle 480i and make nice, sharp images. A similar quality 4 inch color display would look like it was covered in Vaseline. That is also why the original Macintosh was usable with the tiny monochrome display. It was comparatively 'high resolution' and looked good.
Then along came Sony and blew everyone's dicks off with the Trinitron in the late 60's. Instead of using three sperate electron guns, which required careful focusing systems and regular calibration, they used one gun with three cathodes. Since they were fixed in place you only needed to calibrate the system at the factory using simple permanent magnets placed around the yoke of the CRT. No more finicky extra systems to keep the color beams focused. They also abandoned the shadow mask and used the aperture grill. Instead of a sheet with holes you had super thin wires running vertically. The wires were thinner than the boarders on even a slot mask. On top of that, each row had no top or bottom boarder around it. Picture related. This allowed for even brighter imagery and sharper pixels. It also meant that the CRT had no curve top to bottom. You didn't have to worry about the beams hitting the mask at a bad angle near the top and bottom of the screen because there was no mask to hit. This is the technology that put Sony on the map and made them a premium brand. Prior to this they were just another Japanese electronics company. Sony, Sanyo, Sansui, whatever. All the same. Trinitron is what elevated them. In fact, without it, they likely would have gone under due to the failure of the Chromatron television they had tried to bring to market.
>>109398063So the Triniton the reason why we have gay ass Sony now.
>>109398063Most boomers know Sony as the transistor radio company. They were one of the first transistor mfgs in Japan. Trinitron was always a thing but never super popular in the grand scheme of TVs. I could never unsee those wires running across the screen.>>109398139Nah that's the goycattle who put up their shit and their private capital overlords creating perverse incentives.
