ITT: Tech that never "took off"
>>109382882I had one, it was good shit and had potential. Shame.
>>109382908Problem I think is because it's not standard across all Macs, there was no strong incentive to support it. And you don't want to make it a strong part of your application's interface if there's no comparable non-touchbar analog.
>>109383097it was cheaper to not offer it, just how it goes, shit had some pseudo intelligence, it knew which controls were the main ones from each entity you were focusing.
>>109382882I know it's still exists but it's a mystery to me why this didn't take off, especially in the third world where many people can't afford a personal PC but have a phone.
>>109382882
>>109383298You realize this was a toy correct? It wasn't supposed to "take off"
>>109383317It was the future...
>>109383262I've wanted this to be mainstream for a looooong time. It makes so much sense to me. The phone in my pocket is stronger than my laptop from 2015. There's no reason not to do this.
>>109383262Precisely because of thatIt's a product whose potential customers are third worlders while it's only sold in first world western nations. Also the devices that have a desktop mode and usb c 3.0 screen mirroring like premium galaxy or pixel devices aren't popular in the third world. And third, third worlders already have cheap android 'laptops' that can give the same experience while being half the price.
>>109383336So no then
>>109382882Androids with the pop up camera
>>109382882absolutely retarded. you could just have that on your screen instead of adding another screen to the fucking keyboard.
>>109382882The entire internet made fun of Apple for doing this instead of just giving their computer a touch screen.
>>109382882i like the touchbar had in on two of myy work machines its comfy. another one applel did was 3d touch i think they got rid off that after 1 or 2 phone gens
>>109383354its only really samsung who put serious work into making the desktop experience nice too, if google pushed harder for it it probably would have taken off better but them doing so would have cut into chromebook sales. most people who want a laptop want it for the windows or macos. if not theyd just stick to their phone most normies do not own a computer
Lol I don't use any of those things, just looks like the kind of spam I see on most sites
>>109383298Jesus FUCK what a horrendous D-pad
>>109382882Function keys are superior in every way.
>>109382908I had one too. I kinda never figured out a good use for it.
>>109382882That's a laptop, and I see them all the time.Where do you live to not see a laptop?
>>109383776You're so cool
>>109383764I don't recall specifically, bu I used it, it was useful enough to display focused content relevant menus, it was good shit, it had potential
>>109383097Yeah it would have been fine if they didn't take the F key row away at the same time, there's clearly plenty of room to have both and it would let people adaptThere's clearly a demand for customizable macro keypads like the stream deck but losing functionality first is a hard sell
>>109385815the F key row is still available in the bar by holding the fn key>>109383753they're not context sensitive, resizeable, slideable or customizalbe so that's wrong
Optane
>>109382962???
>>109382908>>109383764>>109382882i think those 'stream decks' are similar in spirit
>>109385905>just hold theno, fuck you
>>109383354I kind of want one of these to use as a shitposting machine
>>109382882I kinda like it. Not instead of a row of keys, but in addition it could have been fire.
>>109386485This. Everyone forgets that Lelnovo tried this first, failed massively, and then creatively bankrupt Apple tried it, and then failed massively for the second time.
>>109383262>>109382882Razer had something that I would have killed for, it was called project Linda, and it was basically a laptop with a USB connector. You would slide the phone into the dock, which was where the touch pad would normally be, and the phone screen would become the touchpad, and the phone would serve as the actual computing device. The rest of the laptop was supposedly a giant battery, keyboard, and screen.Would have been nice if Razer had made it.https://www.razer.com/concepts/project-linda
>>109383262this would've been cool if it took off. but you need a flagship smartphone because websites are so bloated these days. And even still it would lag. It might be better now though since processors are more powerful since MS continuum 10 years ago.
>>109386076what a piece of shit this was, had a laptop with it and was slow to a crawl. i replaced the octane 32 for a 256ssd and the thing flew.
>>109383262because you are still limited to a mobile os that can only run mobile apps. no real usecase. Windows 11 would have been useful here since it can emulate X86 64bit programs. a steamdeck is unironically more useful
>>109386076intel killed it early
>>109388895Seems like the only use case for this would be if you wanted to play Android games on a big blown up screen, which I don't think would translate well since they're made for the aspect ratio of a phone.
>>109383642the 2030s will be VR's decade
>>109387617The touchbar was actually in the development pipeline when Jobs was still alive.
>>109386334Yes, these were dynamic though every website or application you loaded, placed different set of menu items in the bar, for example the volume was nice to have a touchbar for it, pretty coolio
>>109382882Should have just put it on screen, you know... along the bottom. Get rid of the Dock, which sucks anyways. And make it part of the OS instead of a separate thing you need to touch with your hand, you'd use the cursor to access the tasks on that bar.A taskbar, if you will.Seriously I have no fucking idea why Apple insists on that piece of shit dock, one icon per program is such awful garbage and it creates all this weird wasted space in the corners, just implement a taskbar already.
>>109382882I imagine it'd easily break and be even more annoying to repair>>109389183>Windows phoneI member
>>109386485>>109387617lenovo's implementation sucked. zero advantage over just having an fn row.Apple's implementation actually had upsides over an fn row (mainly that you could have various sliders)
>>109383780Thanks fren.
>>109389742Infinity Fabrics and UMAs displaced them.
>>109382882It runs Doom though.
>>109388895this could make a comeback with how much money Valve is putting into FEX
>>109383262When I worked for RadioShack I switched to sprint because I thought the Photon was the future of phones. Fucking dual core and could plug into its own dedicated dock with keyboard and screen and turn into a laptop. Shit was awesome but that never caught on.
>>109391644>genuinely believed a gimmick would be the future thats just sad
>>109391876It worked and worked well. Was the only phone powerful enough to do that. Then before you know it multiple cores aren't even advertised anymore because it's just commonplace.
>>109382882should've put it between the keyboard and the touchpad and made it recessed
>>109383262most people own phone only AND are ok with it. not exactly a rocket science.
>>109390710Doubtful. A not insignificant portion of people can't get past the motion sickness and eye fatigue. Meta also gave up on the low cost VR niche. So unless the chinks can break into that market niche across the west it will go back to being a pricy enthusiast toy.
>>109391473what do horses have to do with it?
>>109392288If there's one thing the Quest succeeded at it's giving a bunch of kids access to VR who are going to grow up already acclimated to it. Panels are just going to get cheaper as manufacturing goes up, and now I'm beginning to see the huge shift of focus on ergonomics. Pimax for example are actually competing with Bigscreen Beyond in weight now. We've gone from giant bricks to swimming goggles. Graphics and computing are also going to improve of course, albeit slower than before. The main thing is to improve the experiences people have so that they want to keep using VR.I don't see the current situation as giving up. There's some hurdles, but the great part is that they're not impossibly high, we just need time.
>>109391506Badly
>>109382882> faggot buttons on my laptopiFaggots
this was a fun time.Google were excited and thought they were on the cutting edge of inventing the future. And then normalfags collectively icked at the entire concept, and they were cringe overnight.
internal laptop chargers/AC adapters
>>109386485lelnopo got shafted massively over the production line for the adaptive row, had to buy it only to use it exactly once lmao, poor yields too
>>109391403just wait til 12
>>109382882I had a work issued macbook with one of these. After two months it started flickering white and service desk replaced it with one that didn't have the bar. Other people had similar issues and they got cycled out very quickly.
>>109382882I had one of these for work. There was no ESC key as it was part of the touch bar, which as a vim user, is a key I'm going to constantly hit. I refused to use this piece of shit as a laptop and only ever used it when connected to a monitor and proper keyboard/mouse.
>>109392430As soon as VR displays with super high resolution come down in cost and become practical to sell to consumers it will explode in popularity.
>>109398124The CEO certainly took off in one of these, off a cliff that's it!.
>>109398129Displays are cheap, driving high resolutions is not.
>>109382882Anyone else remember appleās cringe announcement event where they had a guy DJing on the touchbar?
>>109398308and despite them never really taking off, have permanently altered the english language as people keep saying "segway" instead of the original word (segue)
>>109390864MORE DANGER INDEED LMAO
>>109383262Forgive me for not being into phones like most people. But can't you just run a monitor via usb C and a mouse via monitor setup to do the same thing? Gaming wise you can make up for it with dolphin, or direct ports if its on the storefront. Hell i think wine might have a port too.
>>109383298get into meshtastic and meshcore
