Explain to a Zoomer why so many of you consider this the perfect OS (or at the very least, Microsoft's best)

This is the second time today that I posted on the wrong board. Was meant for /g/, but since we're already here then just answer with "Gayming" perspective in mind, to keep it in-topic.
>>
It was the last Windows OS designed for computers rather than tablets and other retard hardware.
>>
I don't. It doesn't have as many bsods.
It uses more resources. Currently mine crashes about once every 10 minutes.
It's a shit OS, Vista was probably better. XP is better. But even XP killed DOS so XP is shit.
MS should have kept building with 95 or 98. They most likely changed everything like they do once in a while because they don't know how to deal with what was done. They lose people. And reinvent the wheel to be some new fucked up faggot thing. Now with fucking jeets.

Also Windows was never good.
>>
Nothing. It's just typical retardation. People will pretend they didn't, but they cried about going from XP to Vista, from Vista to 7 and from 7 to 8. It's equally funny to see people "boycotting" Win 11 by refusing to abandon 10 when 11 is just the same as win 10 and people hated on 10 as well.

It's super stable, performant, very OFFLINE computer operating system, with a high level of compatibility throughout generations.

It does not try to appeal to the mobileslop device audiences like W8 and up, failing at both desktop and portable modes.

It does not try to be an online SERVICE like W10-11.

It does not require online registration,
does not force updates for you (remember when you could choose update policy ZERO - "NEVER check or download updates"?),
does NOT push adds into the UI.

What comes to UI, from Wee8 onwards, Windows essentially runs TWO (2) different file browsers / operating systems on top: the Explorer, and the Metro-style sloppa. And the more years go by, the more MS hides basic functions and options behind the latter, or COMPLETELY removes settings from the end-user.

W7 also does not support / force "Apps" into your computer, and you are NOT stuck with the shitty Windows Store releases by default. The install size and system requirements are also roughly HALF of that of W10, and less than 1/4th of Wee11's, requiring no TPM or other botnet backdoors.

You also get free HEVC support, support for just about any 32 and 64-bit program, and a piece of mind knowing that you "own" your PC.

The amount of butthurt my legally obtained W7 Ultimate SP1 install DVDs and their still valid activation key cause within the Jeet community is also quite hilarious.

Finally: W7 has the best mascot tan.

I had a Windows 7 until two years ago. It died. I upgraded it to WIndows 10 in 2020 but then switched it back.
Then I had to use my stupid Laptop with Windows 10 on it (originally windows 11 was on it but I "downgraded" it).
This year I bought a new pc and installed Linux on it and made it look like I'm using Windows XP including the iconic hill background.
I had two other laptops with Windows 10 on them before the Windows 11 one but they both got broken.

I don't think 7 was that good it's just that 8, 8.1(i think it was called?), 10 and 11(in particular) were so bad people are nostalgic for win 7 which was a decent product
Older people around me who used Vista hated it, and while I have nostalgia for XP because they were the first OS I used a lot of old people dislike it because it was buggy and insecure

I'd say some people would've still have 98 on their school computers (assuming their schools had computers/a computer lab) some ways into the XP era.
When all you're teaching elementary students is typing form, e-mail, basic web safety, etc. then it was more than enough.
>>
I wouldn't use perfect for any OS but Windows 7 with the classic shell felt like the right balance of usability with a lightweight interface. It felt snappy, responsive, looked clean and simple and straightforward. While plenty of GNU/Linux distros and DEs mimic the visual aesthetic, they lack the polish that a leading corporation is capable of. Sadly MS has squandered that, it's just not where their focus is anymore.
>>
I call it windows syndrome. Each version of windows is worst than the last and by the end of that versions lifetime its had enough fixes by the community and microscope that the product is usable just for the cycle to start all over.

DOS and later 3.11 were the first things I used. I sure as shit don't have nostalgia for either. I don't recall much about xp besides the visuals, but 7 was actually designed with EUX in mind, unlike 10.
When I downgraded to 10 it took me several fucking minutes to find out how to pin folders to quick access in the file explorer because you can't just pin current location and call it a day. That should NOT happen.

That's because the MS cycle has always been alternating between Works and Shit. Naturally most people skipped every other iteration. I hope the cycle continues and 12 won't be even worse than 11, but I'm not optimistic.
>>
I've been using Windows since '95, although I can't say much about Windows 95 and 98 because I was just a kid, but from the millennial era onwards I do remember.
Win XP/WIn 7>Win8.1>Win vista>Win 10/11>Win 8>Win millennial
Windows 8 for millennials was definitely garbage, much worse than Windows 11. Honestly, I think Windows 10 and 11 are the same; maybe 11 is a bit worse, but I've never been a fan of 10 either. Windows Vista isn't as bad as people remember, although I do miss things that XP had, which was much better, and which Windows 7 just has with a facelift. Windows 8.1 didn't seem as bad to me as Windows 8, and I think it's better than 10.

Significant improvement over XP and early Vista, with a much smaller level of garbage you had to disable than what came after. Was way more stable than XP, I don't think I saw a BSOD over several years of using it. Aero is the best looking UI Windows has ever had even if 7's version of it was slightly worse than Vista's and Windows has looked like shit on a stick ever since 8.
>>
>>109383934
With Windows Vista, although also somewhat unstable, most of the complaints were because people didn't have PCs with more than 256MB of RAM and without a dedicated GPU. I used it on a Dual Core E2140 PC with 2GB of RAM and a GT 8500, so it wasn't such a bad experience, actually.
>>

It's not the best OS or best Windows - Windows 11 is way better than Windows 7 in almost every way imaginable, but the UX specifically is much better on 7. I think to most users, the UX is the most important part of an OS when it comes to perception of how good or bad it is.
Like I don't think using 7 is any better than Vista given the same exact hardware, but because Vista was released a while before 7 it provided a really shitty UX due to the toasters of the time being unable to run it smoothly.

Since this thread is full of OSfags, can someone explain to me why W11's multi-monitor support is SO MUCH FUCKING WORSE than W10's? I swear I have to do a different series of switching from Single/Duplicate/Extend/MainMonitor on the software end, and plugging/uplugging monitor cables, on/offing monitors, every single time to get what I want.
For reference, I have 3 monitors which I cycle through these settings:
Single Monitor 1
Extend Monitor 1 and 2
Single Monitor 3
This worked fine one W10 but it's a mess on W11.

Vista was equally good. Windows 2000 was a different animal, much lighter and more spartan. As a zillenial who used XP, Vista, 7 and currently holding onto an old 10 machine: a lot of people hated Vista, but it had a lot of improvements over XP, stability and security wise, the problem was it was heavy for the time.
Windows 7 is a repackaged Vista, but the computers it ran on were actually made with 64 bit in mind and were more powerful. It was also the last time were the computer felt 'yours' rather than wrestling with Microsoft for your own desktop, at least from a standard user perspective. If you had used Windows before, everything was familiar. Same start menu idea and your task bar worked the same as Microsoft didn't push the metro interface just to 'fix' it on 10.
A lot of issues with 11 are the same I had (and still have) with going from 7 to 10, just even worse. And I'm sure a lot of people had coming from 95/98/ME to XP. Such is the nature of Microsoft.

Package management, or what you can call program installation management, is superior on gnu/linux. Imagine if you can go to the control panel and download all your programs from the installation list. You don't even have to double-click .exe and tardwrangle the install, it is automatically installed for you after you simply type in the name, hit enter, and press y. No need to choose a folder or location, no need to tick off complementary bundled services like installing google search. No need to keep pressing next, next, next. And these programs are all free. Of course, if you didn't want to, you can actually manually install them via your distro's websites. But you're too retarded to find said websites.

If you're too brainlet for that, stick with your abomination of windows and its copycat of the android and apple store.

The lack of a monetized, business oriented ecosystem is what appeals to me. From the ground up gnu/linux wasn't made to cater to businessmen, it's a paradise for tech geeks who couldn't stand closed-source software. You also can't expect a bunch of nerds to have a front-end mindset like fancy GUI when they're used to working server rooms and such. For the recent converts who are rabidly promoting gnu/linux though they're only making it worse by trying to force everyone off microsoft.
I may be a contrarian when I type this, but I think Microsoft or closed systems are necessary if only to keep the normalfags out, just as gnu/linux is necessary to keep the autists in place. You only need to look at the mass adoption of smartphones to see how dumbed down intellectually the tech sector has become compared to say when it was limited to desktop and office computers and a floating online population of 100m across europe and america. The chinese had the right idea of having a firewall to keep their insane netizens in.

Your mental model is flawed. Each version of windows is not a distinct thing, they are snapshots of a continuous process of development. Windows 7 is a snapshot. Its not being forced into obsolescence, it is obsolete by definition. In regards to saying that windows 7 could easily support these new features, well yes, its called windows 8/10/11 etc, newer snapshots of the development branch.

What a ridiculous "mental model". Why do you need a new full blown "snapshot" (7->10) just to run a new version of Chrome that didn't add any significant change? If you the source to a program and compile it with a 7-compatible Windows SDK, it will run on 7. Use that exact same source, but compile it using a non 7-compatible Windows SDK, it won't run on 7. Are you saying that is not forced obsolescence? The program didn't require anything extra from the new SDK but still could not run.

>>
>>109386754
You are mixing up different things, OS version and SDK/software versions.

But lets address the SDK side of things. Each version of windows adds new features. Some are killer features. The windows api has numerous warts, sometimes a new api solves one of these warts. Software can then be simplified as it no longer has to work around these warts. Sometimes software will leave a fallback code path for older windows versions. And Microsoft SDKs have been doing this for years. But usually it gets to a point where supporting an older version results in an architectural cost for the software. So eventually they cut off older versions. As a programmer I don't fault people for doing this, some of the older windows apis are real awkward and make certain things basically impossible without hacks.

>>
>>109386835
I'm not mixing anything. Support (or lack of support) for certain OSs boils down to the Windows SDK. Projects want to use the latest SDK for countless reasons, and that forces them to drop support for older OSs. It's as simple as that.
A simple "Hello world" compiled with the latest Windows SDK or MSYS2 (which uses a 10+ version of the SDK) won't run on Windows 7 (and probably 8). Programmers will need to bend over backwards to support an OS that is unsupported by the SDK. It's not an issue that the actual program requires a new feature that's only available on the new OS.
>>
>>109387564

>>
>>109383862
Brother if you're really a zoomer you should have experienced it at least once in your life.

But the answer is it was the last true Windows. After 7 there was a restructuring in Microsoft and Windows has had an identity crisis ever since.
The UI was functional and consistent, you could actually choose between a classic or modern look, there was no vibecode or webslop, no forced "Microsoft accounts", no bloat or ads like candy crush being installed by default. It just worked. The perfect balance between functionality and aesthetic.
I wouldn't even say it was all perfect. But compared to everything since it's an absolute gem.

No matter how far the user went, there was always a way to get what they needed back. I always refer to hail Mary tech workarounds at "Windows 7 Level Shenanigans."

its not, windows users are just dead afraid of progress and clamp to whatever theyre using until the very last moment when microsoft forces them to switch
and even then when their computer is becoming a security risk its still difficult to convince them to upgrade
10 was just as much as a disaster at launch, by now it has over a decade worth of patches and fixes ironing out any of the early problems

I think the alternating love/hate trend with windows versions stopped with 10. Windows 10 was not "loved"; people had to be dragged by their ears away from 7 for years with repeated free upgrade campaigns to make it the majority adopted Windows OS. It did become a solid stable OS eventually, but nobody was excited to change off of 7 to it. I bet most consumers just got squeezed off of 7 from lack of software support.

Elder Millennial here.

Windows 7 had the best of everything, all the shit we liked about Vista, XP, and 98 but it didn't crash and actually worked. Oh you can't find the driver? No big deal, 7 will find it for you (originally introduced in XP) it looked good like Vista but didn't crash and needlessly hog a bunch of resources. It had the program compatibility of 98 almost everything written for 7 at the time had a 98 driver and vice versa, people wrote Windows 7 drivers for the 3dfx Voodoo cards. It didn't nag at you for updates. It didn't spy on you. It was stable and lightweight, you could run it on a mobile Coppermine Pentium 3 with a little extra memory. Those tiny Netbooks, all could run 7 Starter and they weren't slow like all the other Netbook OS's.

It wasn't bloated, and if it had bloat you could easily remove it. It didn't force updates, it didn't harvest your information. It didn't come pre-installed with malware, if 10 and 11 were released 20 years ago no one would have bought it and it would have been labeled as malware by every single anti-virus software option at the time. You didn't have to do a bunch of crap to it to make it not shitty when you installed it. You didn't need a Microsoft account.

Now, granted almost all of these things are available in 10 or 11 IoT LTSC but with a lot more work and a couple scripts. I use both and once debloated and with the telemetry removed they are decent and all the info to do those things to it are readily available with a simple Google search if you're not stupid.

7 was just a good plain honest operating system. I have two front-line production machines that I use that still run it with VxKex, pic related Unreal 1999 online on almost period hardware.

I can only give you my version of why Windows 7 is so liked. So, I was born in 1990, and I remember when XP came out, I was excited because it had so many new cool features, a new UI. It felt so fresh. It felt so, like, Y2K, because before that, Windows ME was fucking atrocious garbage. So by comparison, it felt like, wow, we're moving ahead into the future. It was great. And then Windows Vista came out. I used that for around three years, and I liked where it was going. It had quite a bit of an improvement over XP, but in reality, it was just XP with a newer kind of glassy look and a whole bunch of bugs. Like, it was the buggiest OS I've ever used besides, like, a Linux OS. So, it was, like, I remember having to use Firefox, and every few seconds it would crash, and you'd have to hit don't send, and then something else would crash, and then you'd have to hit don't send again. And then it was just a constant hitting don't send, using it, then hitting don't send. And then when Windows 7 first came out, I fucking hated it, and I thought it was trash, but then I realized it looked cooler than Vista, and it was basically an improvement in every possible way because it didn't have any of the bugs that Vista was plagued with, and it didn't have any of the botnet garbage, the ads, the, like, telemetry, that when Windows 8 came out, it was awful looking. I was like, oh my god, they did, like, a complete 180 of the direction they should have been going. And then 10 just, like, doubled down on it, and it just made it even worse. And then 11 was basically just the most enchitification style garbage that there could have ever been. So, it was more of, yeah, it just worked than it was anything that was like, wow, it was exceptional. Because the products today are so garbage, it's kind of the last OS from Microsoft that wasn't absolute trash.

Why do all gay men such as yourself act like, like, like such obnoxious faggots desperate for cock. A post saying youre a faggot and desperate for attention would have, like, had more dignity. And when I was 15 in 2005 and had windows XP i could give less of a single shit about it feeling like le hegging fruity algo or if vista had more features. Like, try to like, not be such a stupid FUCK
