Ostensibly it was to simplify the water cooling segment while promising the extra performance from it to more users by making it more accessible. De facto they're useful to save space and get a less cluttered fishtank.

I have recently begun to admire more stealth builds which are minimal on RGB lighting and focus more on tasteful metal (such as an air cooler heatsink) and simplicty. Not every PC build needs to be a neon glass window.
