I wanna know if I should buy these Adam Audio D3V speakers (active with USB) or a pair of passive Dali Kupids with a cheap class D amp. Which ones would sound better on a desktop without a sub?
>>
I could also get a pair of Dali Sonik 1s as they also go down to 50hz like the Adam Audios.
>>

Logitech speakers are the best. They'll outlast your need for them
>>
I had some Adam studio monitors and the power supply fried itself after a couple years

iLouds also have issues with their board randomly dying. Seems to come with the territory, sadly.

Logitech is the way to go, their speaker line up has a solid track record, and depending on the model you are not going to have an empty wallet after buying.

why bother when you can get some boomers $500 speakers from the early 2000's for like $50 regularly?

build a pair yourself instead instead of wasting money for some cheapass chunks of plastic. and get a sub, or better yet, make that yourself too.
>>
>>109390358
That's silly. The necessary tools are expensive and that assumes one has the necessary skill for the job.
>>
>>109390436
all that you need is an electric drill, that you probably already have, a circular saw which is around 70-80 bucks and usually come with a decent blade with good tooth count for mdf, or better yet a table saw (slightly more expensive), a router which is around 30-40 bucks and that too comes with the required bits usually, and some clamps for gluing shit together.
>necessary skills
you are not building a rocket. the router takes some time getting used to, and you could kill yourself with it, but you are not a retard now, are you?
>>
>>109388947
D3V has a problem where the tweeter will fucking turn off at low volume. I'll always keep buying passive because of bullshit like that. They're always trying to cheat the measurements, add delay and just straight up have bugs. More likely to hiss too. Meanwhile a dedicated class D amp that won't hiss with any speaker is $99 nowadays.
>>
I just use 30 dollar logitech speakers I've had for almost 20 years. If I want LOUD or good quality, I use my nice headphones. Audiophilia is a dangerous and expensive path to go down, I'd pump the brakes.
>>
>>109388947
Gonna by honest with you anon, while I have not listened to either of those speakers so cannot speak on any in particular, you should not expect miracles in terms of low-end out of small speakers.

In my experience there's no real replacement for driver size & enclosure volume when it comes to low-end performance. I think 50Hz frequency response out of a 3.5" driver is basically going to be fictional, you will not get any significant output as low as that, especially not at a volume level that is otherwise comfortable.

In terms of active speakers or passive + external amp, I personally prefer passive speakers. A lot of active speakers have issues with hiss, I find this kind of baffling but on the other hand passive speakers with a decent amp rarely seem to have this issue. Having a separate amp is also a bit more flexible and if the amp dies or malfunctions you can easily replace it. The passive speakers themselves should last far longer, speakers don't really break unless they're way overdriven or get physically damaged.

Thanks for the advice. But according to Erin (the guy who measures a bunch) the Adams actually go down to 50hz without any dropoff, and it's a 3 inch woofer I think. But yeah I totally understand the size factor.

If I were to add a sub, do you think I could get away with a 6 inch sub that only goes down to 50hz in an apartment? I don't think I could use a "real" sub like a 10 or 12 incher that goes down to 30 hz, that would surely annoy the neighbors. I had one like that in a house before.

The 50hz sub I was considering is called Argon Audio Malmö Sub 6 and costs about 300 euro bucks.
>>
>>109391082
Apparently this has been fixed with the latest firmware. My only concern about it now is that you can't turn off the LED light on the front panel. But I could hopefully tape this over. Also these only play to around 90db before they start to distort. Is that enough for nearfield listening or am I gonna wish for more volume?
>>
>>109391561
I had a pair of Klipsch RP-8000F in my house, they were awesome. But now I'm moving into a studio apartment.
>>
>>109391321
>I think 50Hz frequency response out of a 3.5" driver is basically going to be fictional,
They boost it at low volume and reduce the boost the more you increase the volume. So if you're adding a sub you'll have to keep the volume at max and regulate it elsewhere. And if they're doing it dynamically, not based on the volume knob position, then you'll have to throw them in the trash.
>>
>>109391489
They look cool. But they have bluetooth. I just returned a pair of Ruark Audio MR1 MK3's because the bluetooth couldnt be turned off. I dont want to sit in a radioactive field.
>>
>>109391825
So you can't EQ the bass (like doing a +3db boost)?
>>
>>109392183
NTA
You can boost the bass but it will become very distorted. The bass output is limited by physics here. Plan on getting a subwoofer and applying an active crossover to it. Better yet use DSP for the crossover and apply a target curve.
If it is any consolation, any small speakers you buy will not have good bass output and will need subs. Buy these if you think they're a good deal and fit your budget, then just save up for a sub or two and other pieces you'll need for the DSP. Your psychoacoustic ear-brain system is remarkably good at tolerating subpar sound reproduction once it gets used to it, so you can always just plan for objective improvements in the future.
>>
>>109391825
>They boost it at low volume and reduce the boost the more you increase the volume.
Yeah I guess they might do that, like I said I've never listened to any of the speakers OP mentioned. I will say though I never really heard proper bass out of any speaker small than ~6" and even at that point you'll likely still want a sub in my experience (with bookshelf speakers I mean, not larger floorstanders).

tools (electric drill, table saw, clamps, mdf, soldering iron station)
parts (xover, woofers/tweeter, damping material, wires, etc.) + shipping
time + space
projects that don't suck and have been measured/tested aren't cheap

vs

just buying a Kali/KEF/Neumann whatever + a measurement mic

DIY is arguably more expensive and worse, especially if this is your 1st attempt
>>
>>109392523
Got it. Well, I wont be getting a subwoofer with these since they dont have a sub-out port. So then Id have to buy an interface. Then I might as well buy passive bookshelf speakers and an amp instead. So lets see how they sound when they get here. I am high hopes and expectations.

There’s a reason why they are impossible to beat for the price, i got the sub as well. They can overpower my klipsch floor standing at half volume. Only issue ive seen consistently is quality issues but you can rma easy.

Would kef speakers be good for a desktop in a small room?
>>
I use Fisher 100w speakers with a 400w sub and a 750w amp through a Rockfish DAC. seems to do the trick. In the floor I have a little 75w bass shaker screwed to the floor joist. Above my head I have a panel speaker. All I do is music.

still cringe, you have no clue what accurate audio is. Even if i cant justify spending 20k on concert hall speakers, i do understand what accurate audio sounds like. There are tons of cheap desktop speakers that sound better than multiple thousand dollar floor pairs.
>>
Don’t know much about speakers but asked Claude for you:

“ For a desktop setup, I’d take the Adam D3Vs: they’re designed for nearfield listening, have proper DSP, and avoid the gamble of pairing the Kupids with a bargain amp. The DALIs may sound bigger and warmer, but without a sub the D3Vs should give you tighter, more controlled bass and better clarity at close range. Unless you specifically want a relaxed hi-fi sound, the Adams are the safer choice.”

nice cope but if you're too poor to afford prosumer equipment how can you even say you know what accurate audio sounds like without that frame of reference?

you're just a sour grapes poorfag

i already said in my previous post tools are cheap, and once you buy them you can use them later for other stuff. do you seriously mean to say that you dont have an electric drill in you house already?
space is an issue though, i'll give you that.
you also dont even have to bother making a crossover if you use dsp which is much better as it allows much finer tuning.
>DIY is arguably more expensive and worse, especially if this is your 1st attempt
if all you need is some dogshit that spews sound for 50 bucks, then no shit its not worth it, but for hi-end diy is the real endgame since for around 1k bucks you can make a pair that easily beats whatever nearly every company offers as their hi-end, most expensive offering.
and making a cabinet is not hard as long as you do some basic research.
i myself was inspired by kef and mofi to make a coax pair for myself and it was well worth it, and plan to make a sub as well because after buying multiple subs from multiple reputable vendors and not liking any of them i decided to take matters in my own hands.
>>
>>109391799
I live in an apartment and have an RSL Speedwoofer 10e. It's a powerful sub that can go pretty low. I set it on a pad to get rid of any vibrations going into the floor and I run it at one third power and turn it off in the morning and late evening and haven't had any complaints so far. A small bass shouldn't be a problem I would think unless you were really blasting it.
>>
>>109396361
Where is the high-end equipment?
>>
>>109391954
>They look cool. But they have bluetooth.

also the sub woofer doesn't connect physically via cable to the two monitor speakers but some proprietary wireless technology. should i avoid?

if your room acoustic is shit even Kef can sound mediocre. Something like the LSX II can fit a desk however there are smaller active speakers but not necessarily better.

These Kali IN-5 monitors might be better than the Adam D3Vs. They're nearfield (sweet spot 1m) but a lot larger and with bigger woofers. And they have separate woofers for bass and mids. I think they can be connected straight into a DAC like the Topping E30. Might be the best 2.0 setup for PC outside of buying expensive Genelecs.
