Stare at some black text in light mode for ~10 seconds and look away and you might have a slight afterimage. And the top brightness setting on my SDR IPS screen is brighter than the top brightness on my older LCDs.Apart from that, I partly blame phones. For one, AMOLED screens look especially great on dark mode, and save battery power since they're making less light. For another, people use their phones in bed in the dark, and dark mode is much more comfortable on the eyes in that setting. So, people have gotten used to dark mode and want their computers to look that way too.

the usecase for light themes is on reflective lcd's or e-ink (and on bright sunny days for backlit screens)
