My man knows nothing about GNOME

Mint is a pointless distro at this point in time, along with Debian itself and all other Debian-based offshoots. Just use Arch with limine + btrfs or Fedora if you’re still somehow too afraid of stuff breaking despite rollbacks.
>>
I'll probably put it on my desktop then because it's so much better than every other distro. It took me hours to get all my AI / venv shit and launchers and programs working on KDE so that's the only reason I haven't jumped back to Mint. Cinnamon is so nice, I love using my Mint laptop. It's much comfier than KDE on my desktop, which is a jagged and sharp experience compared to the soft, relaxing feeling of Cinnamon.
>>
>>109390934
Debian definitely sucks, it's gay hipster shit. Ubuntu is FINE... but Mint is great. Vast majority of desktop linux users use Ubuntu whether you like it or not, and that means when problems come up someone else has already figured it out
>muh the arch wiki
I don't want to fuck around and learn shit
>muh Fedora recommendation
I am on Fedora right now and it's one of the worst experiences in Linux I've ever had. Way worse than Ubuntu/Mint were even 10 years ago, and it doesn't "just work" I've had to fuck around and split hairs to get shit working that I never had to worry about in Mint
>>
>>109390911
The reason I don't like to use derivatives is because of how it lags behind the original codebase.
Cinnamon, XFCE, Mate are at the whims of GNOME and will spend the rest of their lifecycle trying to catch up or patch their retarded decisions. Not innovate.
Arch + KDE user, not hating on Mint but it is what it is.
>>
>>109391156
Look at GNOME's "innovation" is that where you want to be? MATE and Cinnamon are forks that gained popularity when it went gay. If KDE went gay would you keep using it?

that and incredibly slow speeds on updates. I guess they don't have mirrors or something? Some of my updates are like fucking dial up tier. I literally have a Mint computer on the other side of the room and Mint's update manager allows you to select the fastest mirror.
Oh yeah, and for Nvidia drivers I installed, they were still using the fucking open ones. Technically worked but I had to use ChatGPT to figure that one out. In Mint you just click a button or two and it works.
"discovery" is total shit compared to Mint's update manager.

I'm tired of retards like you flocking to linux and not understanding that you need to adapt to a fundamentally different way of doing things. Fedora is easy, Mint is easy, Arch is easy, just use them properly, if you expect to just download apps from browser and click buttons for everything like on windows, you will eventually break shit and not understand how or why because you never adapted to the workflow
>>
This was my first distro and used it for like three months before going back to Windows.
All the games I played display stuttered because of X11
Wayland had gay weird issues
Technically the most just werks distro by far, had the least amount of issues, but still.

Annoying

Clem being retarded was established when he used the Linux Mint blog to virtue signal his pro-Palestine stance back in 2009. Maybe if he didn’t tell potentially millions of people to not donate or contribute to his project if they didn’t also hate Israel, Mint would actually be a decent distro

There's no point to Mint because Debian is just as easy to use and configure as Mint these days and you can choose a real DE during installation instead of meme Cinnamon. There's no point to Ubuntu anymore either

They've rebased Mutter several times already. It's everything else they have to reimplement. Before the latest version, they still relied on libgnomekbd, which was already made obsolete in GNOME 3.6
>>
>>109392141
Call me crazy, but I think GNOME is cheating.
I actually saw an increase in frame rate by running in windowed mode, but only when it's already in the triple digits. My theory is that it only blits to the framebuffer once per V-blank, which at 60Hz shaves off enough work to be measurable.

mint has mostly sane defaults. the same cannot be said about 90% of distros

Mint is so nice, it's hard to imagine switching. The only thing that would get me to move away from it is if I can put together an equivalent desktop setup in NixOS. I already have a server, and I am starting to get the appeal, but haven't tried it on a desktop, and I assume it's got more warts there.
But anything else would feel like a waste. Fedora, Arch, and their derivatives would require learning yet more conventions, more new distro quirks, but getting less from the effort compared to NixOS.

Mint would be great if it had proper KDE support. KDE is basically the de facto Linux desktop at this point. The others still don't even have extremely basic shit like media thumbnail previews on folders.
>>
>>109399122
Nemo shows media thumbnails. Mint supports MATE, Xfce and Cinnamon. I recall Mint offering KDE at one point.
Of course, Mint's crown jewel is Cinnamon. I love Cinnamon. It's much better than KDE outside of customization. If you want to customize go Mint Xfce.
But Cinnamon is pretty much the cleanest, nicest DE ootb.
I'm not a big ricer. I am typing on a KDE machine and everything is bone stock save the wallpaper. But Cinnamon is a very attractive, no-nonsense DE if that's what you're into.

Qt and KDE are rolling they don't provide support for anything but the latest version. So mint will never ship KDE unless you want an insecure buggy mess, more than the usual KDE bs.
>KDE is basically the de facto Linux desktop at this point.
kek, it's easy to spot redditors. XFCE and Mint have more installations that krashde
>The others still don't even have extremely basic shit like media thumbnail previews on folders.
Name one.
XFCE and Cinnamon do.
GNOME even uses the actual file manager for picking with global search on top of it.
COSMIC does too.
KrashDE fags live in their own little reddit world and think everyone else is just as incompetent as them and deal with a billion krashes per second just to have a feature nobody asked for or will use a month earlier
>>
>>109399122
>>109399137
Funny you guys mention KDE. I flipped between Mint's KDE and Xfce versions in the 2010's, but once I finally tried Cinnamon (idk 2018?) I liked it better and haven't looked at other DEs since. I did hear that KDE good now. I just haven't had motivation to try it in almost a decade. Plus Mint dropped their version anyway.

I haven't thought too much about desktop NixOS, but it might be a reason for me to go back to KDE? It's just been a stray thought. I love Cinnamon, but because it is so closely developed alongside Mint, I can't imagine there's a team of people porting over all of that stuff to NixOS. Or even if there is I would feel a little nervous about its support.

>>109399137
>I am typing on a KDE machine and everything is bone stock save the wallpaper.
Yeah that's kind of me as well. I was a ricer in my teens because I had the spare time, now I just want something to install, maybe set up a few custom keyboard shortcuts, and have it stay out of my way. That's what kept me on Cinnamon.
>>
>>109399180
>GNOME even uses the actual file manager for picking with global search on top of it
crazy how rare this is to see, I despise how much of a hassle it is to get GNOME's desktop portal working in other environments, their file picker is so much better it's not even funny.

Mint with Cinnamon is the only distro I've used for years with zero issues.
I want to use KDE, but it's perpetually broken.
Even when the devs say they fixed a gorillion bugs, whenever I give it another chance something breaks.
I'm sure they are in fact patching bugs but it's like trying to fill a sieve with water.

Can I show just my folder's "folder.jpg" instead of random files? How customizable is it? Folder previews are important for me because I use folder.jpg in all my files to organize and preview photos-art-movie-musicalbum cover contents. Last time I had to use something called cover-thumbnailer for it.
