I absolutely want to see the old web coming back BUT... I don't care about nature and book reviews. I'm surprised no one "reverse-engineered" and revived sites like planet half life. Someone did revive quake3world at least.

The thing I hate about most of these indie web sites is they're all style and no substance, and make everything about the person themselves and not their hobbies or random autistic shit they like.It's like these people all have created a facsimile of the old internet that is somehow nothing actually like it.

Reddit is over moderated by AI (I got a permanent ban for commenting one word, "hero," on a post about a Palestinian man). Facebook and x are under moderated and filled with AI slop. There's just no reason to spend time on these websites anymore.

It's one of those testaments to how bad at creative problem-solving people are. They made the right diagnosis about the flaws of modern internet, sure, but they can't reason about them on an abstract level and come up with new ideas, so the only course of action available is to return to the previous observable state and try again. Now they're all making eye-rape websites with no visitors, no reason to exist, and nothing to do except blog in the vacuum, i.e. the problems modern internet had solved.

Updating a personal site and viewing all your friends' personal sites takes too much effort and the updates come in too slowly. Much easier to go on social media and find the shocking thing of the day to get stimulated.
