This permarandom gaymer did more for linux in last 2 years than what the linux og creator did since making it.
i don't know what permarandom means but retroactively supporting old radeon gpus under amdgpu was great. I think you're probably a terrible person though
goyims obsession with video games is intriguing
>>109403405He revolutionized... Windows gaming on Linux. And DRM. I guess the games run, but they're all proprietary. And the steam client is just awful. Hundreds of megs of updates, loads of background resources, constant telemetry, etc. GOG/humble don't typically require a launcher, but steam arbitrarily needs a program to manage your games. But hey, gamers are now using Linux, because so many people are used to steam, which are probably the worst users you'll ever talk to, especially on /g/.
>>109403405That's because he actually focused on the user's needs and not his needs.>be linux dev>spend three months finding the perfect programming socks>develop software that does something very specific that might benefit the community>make it dependant on obscure unmaintained libraries that have already been superseded in functionality by three others (that themselves are redundant because the devs don't want to work together)>make your software also dependant on all three of those other libraries>ignore all community feedback because it already does what you want it to in a way that suits your own needs>don't fix issues because "it werks on my machine" and someone will fork it anyway>don't bother with any user interface because you're happy with a CLI after spending the last 15 years using one and you are the only user you envisage using it>eventually someone forks it, but they're slightly right of Mao and maybe thinks your miniskirt is a bit sexualised, this makes them a nazi who you need to dedicate your entire life and programming efforts to destroyingAlong comes Gabe:>has end goals>"I'll pay professionals to deliver them">does just that
>>109403405>This permarandom gaymer did more for linux in last 2 years than what the linux og creator did since making it.That is true, but I recently thought about that... ever noticed how all those big Windows launchers arent on Linux? (EGS, Battlenet, GOG, Battlenet, R*, and more) Sure, it's great that most games are acutally on Steam and work with proton. But I can't see how a serious company like Epic or Blizzard would use fucking Proton for their own stores.>Let's say they port their Launchers to Linux (native)Do you really think they would have proton runners? A product of their competitor? I feel like they would rather use WINE and use the open source knowledge of WINE / Proton and maintain their own WINE runner. On the other hand... Proton is open source, it's even extremely permissive and can be turned proprietary, so maybe they would use it, they could maintain a proton fork and selectively implement upstream patches and even feed it with their codecs and make their version anti cheat competitive.>But bigger gamesI feel some games would even get a native port, like Fortnite for example.
>>109403405Because Linus is a mega-sperg hyper-focusing on ultra-low-level bs non-issues.>don't break the user space!Yeah, except Linux user space is constantly broken and what really triggered you to rant like a retard was someone's coding style not matching exactly what you like.
>>109403644that's a problem of FOSS, of freedom. Google had no problem building a stable and successful os on linux.
https://www.phoronix.com/news/Valve-Sponsors-RADV-WindowsLooks like they want to port radv to windows. Its looking like valve is now amd gpu driver developer which i guess is fine.
>>109403423this is 4chan anon, we're all terrible people here.
>>109403573xie feel personally attacked. reeeeee.
>>109403405The Linux OG creator did incredible work. The Linux kernel is THE most advanced kernel today. It's the desktop ecosystem that dropped the ball.
>>109403513>GOG/humble don't typically require a launcherHumble Bundle? They just give you Steam codes for games
>>109403513You don't even need to use Steam to use protonAlso, they contributed a bunch of kernel and driver shit
>>109405444No, not all of them. Games sold directly through humble often allow launcher-less playback, such as world of goo 2 and worms reloaded. They even distribute via torrent.>>109406162>You don't even need to use Steam to use protongreat if you need to play terrible windows-only games.>Also, they contributed a bunch of kernel and driver shitGlad about amd GPU drivers, but I use Intel integrated graphics. Not sure what else they did.
>>109406583They gave money to a bunch of foss coders. The girl behind Asahi linux (apple m1) was paid by valve if I recall correctly.
>>109406748>girl
>>109403405Linus is a corpo suit nowadays, he never really cared about free software and computing freedom. We need GNU/Hurd more then ever.
>>109406804Does guix offer Hurd? Debian? What's my options.
>>109406748Cool, I guess. Asahi is good for those people with Macs, probably. Not something I use, though.
>>109403405idk it just works for me
I still wish he did more, I want windows and consoles gone so Linux inherits all their benefits If he offered every hardware manufacturer a cut of revenue from sales made on their hardware running Linux that would be great
Why is gaming on linux inefficient and storage hungry? I need to make different prefixes that each take 2gb of space.
>>109403840>Its looking like valve is now amd gpu driver developer which i guess is fine. It's embarrassing that amd sucks at developing their own drivers so much that a third party took it upon themselves to fix it for them.
>>109403513You're a retarded idealistIf Valve didn't work on compatibility then they'd have to pay every single fucking game dev to port their gamesCry about proton all you want, it's a stopgapThere's already an incentive to use vulkan to develop games, it's called arm and valve will encourage making arm friendly games
>>109403513DRM doesn't mean proprietary, anon.99% of games on GOG are proprietary while being DRM free.
>>109403405>>109403573>>109407000He ruin Linux by making gamers over reliance on Windows. You can’t play native Linux. Gabe introduced DRM on Linux when community hated it. People are unaware of an operating system and declared SteamOS a operating system instead of a software that boots first with Arch. Linux had smart people, cultists are dumb people who follow lies.Only bad things happen. Gabe put profit over Linux ethics and transparency.
>>109407000>valve will encourage making arm friendly gamesGreat, hopefully they can pay for Linux to actually work on the majority of arm devices rather than their own headset. And hopefully those games are released without the steam launcher, which forces users to run software on their computer to even download and run a video game. The same software constantly connected to the internet, with constant telemetry and pop up ads, that has a godawful embedded web browser constantly running.>>109407012I am not conflating the two, I am saying that most of valves work on Linux centers around running proprietary software. DRM is a seperate issue that valve has normalized.Point is, if you didn't like proprietary software, then you probably wouldn't see most of valve's "contributions" as valuable.
>>109407335I'm one of the few weirdos that doesn't use steam anyway.I just am appreciative of valves work because I am a linux user.I just buy games on gog or pirate them if they're not on gog.
>>109403405That's because he worked at Microsoft when it was actually good.
>>109406812>Does guix offer Hurd? yes>Debian?yes
>>109403405I find it so sad that people in this boars give credit to this faggot. Sure, Valve as an organization has helped Linux a bit, but those contributions are made by individuals. But the biggest contributions didn't come from Valve, but from individual developers in the open-source world. And it didn't take a couple of years, it's been decades of fixing and improving stuff.Valve took that and fixed/added their own things on top of it
>>109403405I've been using linux for a decade+ and it was perfectly usable then and it's the same amount of usable now. All this talk of "omg it's improved so much!!!" is just collective psychosis.
>>109403405>fatass DRM kike has stripped more freetards of their rights in the last 2 years than all of globohomo's combined history
Well, you're better off running these games on GNU/Linux. And a small handful of free software games have been made. But it continues to expose the weakness that people need to keep adding non-free software to GNU/Linux, because free software is often missing functionality or can feel inferior.
>>109406812Guix does, but only VM images are supported and there's no x11/wayland yet.Debian does, but Sid is a very naughty boy and might decide your toys had better days.
>>109403405He got Windows games to run on Steam and in doing so killed any prospect of developers making Linux ports.
>>109407541>why change anything, it werks on my machineYou are the reason why people stuck with windows for so long. If it were up to people like you, everything would be done through a CLI and almost no one would bother with linux.See:>>109403573
>>109403513>I guess the games run, but they're all proprietary.Yes you fucking moron games are proprietary because unlike pampered fossfaggots who live off corpo grants, game devs have to actually earn money with their products.
>>109403405You may be half joking, but HDR support was there through gamescope 2 whole years before it was implemented in wayland.
>hailed as a hero for bringing his DRM cancer on linuxSad.
>>109407964Not all free software projects are backed by corporate greed. Sometimes they only have one or two people working on them alone.Just chuck your free game on itch. You might at least be able to make something.
Now someone just has to make Linux non-steam reliant while still having the benefits.
>>109408075I'm quite sure that the proton improvements get backported in to winehq over time, aside from the fact you can use proton without steam.
>>109408058The (positive) outcome of porting steam to linux is that gabe standardized game related tools, for example steam-libs, which is a collection of (already existing but, prior to that, fragmented) system independent resources you may then easily convert in a standalone runtime you can refer to develop and run ANY native game without incurring in problems. You don't need to use the steam platform for enjoying the advantages it fostered.
>>109407090>He'll ruin Linux by making the only rational move and solving the chicken and egg situation in the most rational and least labour intensive wayStop being retarsed, you're not running windows, you're not using directx>People are unaware of an operating system and declared SteamOS a operating system instead of a software that boots first with Arch. What retardation is this? It's a distro
>>109407335The problem with arm Linux on arm is arm, not Linux The standard is fundamentally fucked, no UEFI, locked bootloaders Surely someone will be encouraged to open it up for Linux
>>109403450Don't worry, we won. The goyim only care in masturbating to cartoons and playing video games. EZ
>>109403644>>don't break the user space!>Yeah, except Linux user space is constantly brokenThese two are not polar opposites. If your boss puts up a sign that "Do NOT spill coffee on keyboards!" it doesn't mean a keyboard can't possibly break in any way and is now bulletproof. Kernel developers aren't user space developers, they just try not to make it even worse.
>>109407964>pampered fossfaggotsYou have absolutely no idea how this works, do you?>game devs have to actually earn money with their products.I have bought free software games anyways, your point is invalid. I've probably spent hundreds on games with free software. >>109408361Except that many of their "tools" (such as steam input) only work within steam. It is an obvious effort to create a walled garden with advanced forms of DRM.>>109408911>no UEFI, locked bootloaders Grim.
>>109403405and that's fairLinus Torvalds probably doesn't care about gamesGabe Newell however needed an OS his customers can play the games he sells on that isn't Windows.
>>109403405>fatass DRM kike tinkertrannied his DRM kike store on top of a kernel>calls it a new OS>brain dead DRMcucks worship him for it
