I recently upgraded from my old Lenovo RTX 2050 laptop to a second hand MSI Katana with an RTX 4060. The game performance is pretty good but what bothers me is that the battery dies so quickly. Tried messing around with the settings in MSI center, putting it on power saving mode but it still dies pretty fast compared to my old laptop. And I kinda feel bad about upgrading when I realize I won't even be able to watch a movie in full length without having to charge it. Also the keyboard fucking sucks. The enter key is too small and the WASD keys look different from the other keys because "we are le gamers". That could be the worst design decision I've ever seen. Are all modern laptops like this? How can you guys cope with it?

Those are more cheap desktop replacements, the battery is more for show or consider it a built-in UPS.

I just buy a laptop based on the longest possible battery life I can find and then use a desktop for anything intensive. I have found compromising is like what you're getting, the literal worst of all worlds. yor only real option is underclocking and undervolting the shit out of everything to the lowest possible stable settings

Gaming laptops are meant to be used when plugged in. Puny batteries aren't going to be able to supply hundreds of watts of power these GPUs demand.

Did You Turn off the CPU power boost when on battery? It makes a huge difference. I dont know why it's turned on by the default. my 5600 chuggs 45W when its boosting itself to 3.9ghz

The battery on a gaming laptop should be thought of more as a portable UPS. It's to keep the thing on between a move from one outlet to another or to not lose work if there's an outage.

>second hand
Needs a new battery.

Imagine where we might be right now if windows wasnt bloated more and more with every release

>I won't even be able to watch a movie in full length without having to charge it.
means there's something wrong with the battery.

Use MSI afterburner to underclock your GPU.

If you have pre-12th gen Intel, use throttle stop to under volt your CPU.

If you have 12th gen or AMD then lawl.

Next time buy 16 inch macbook pro silicon.

install gentoo

you can reduce the boost clock. I have a 13th gen intel that can't undervolt, but I can reduce the boost clock from 5.3 to whatever and it improves thermals.
I ran stress test and determined that 4.2ghz is the only frequency it can sustain without throttling.
Then I vibe coded a program that makes it very easy to do that.

Bait thread but if you want battery life get a fucking macbook. If you want games... plug it the fuck in because Apple doesn't have games

>buying anything with a dgpu and expecting the battery life to be good
lol

I have an Alienware 15 R4 and I've changed the battery 3 times, now I just keep it behind cable. The CPU goes up to 93 degrees celsius so I don't have to heat my furnace in the winter.

This. When i had my laptop it stayed plugged in during gaming 100% of the time and when browsing i got a good 1h

You can switch over to the IGPU and power off the Nvidia card entirely when you dont need it on some laptops...Undervolting helps too but the main culprit will probably be an old battery that needs replacing...Intel has only gotten power efficient in laptops in the last 1-2 years so dont expect miracles even after switching the battery.

Older gaming laptops are really just portable desktops with a small footprint and a built-in UPS.

skill issue, you fucked something up in config.
with just igpu running and with light browsing it should run for hours.
see if gpu is really disabled, also note there's some issue with jewidia drivers, if you use jewidia hd audio output it'll run gpu all the time.
