I was a Sys Admin for a year and realized my job is about to get axed hard.We just dealt with L1 L2 issues (hate these terms btw) my boss was very cool. She would issue all types of issues to ServiceNow and distribute them to Seniors and Noobs. Of course a lot of L3 issues were gate kept regardless.Any L3 issue can be solved with ChatGPT. Server is down? Ask ChatGPT. And the Seniors would have the audacity to lie that they figured it out themselves. One Senior "wrote" the scripts for imaging. Of course he used ChatGPT. I could even see where the AI was hallucinating with if-else statements and creating shit code.90% of my job as "IT Engineer" was setting up laptops and installing Adobe Acrobat. Work that L3's didn't want to do or we got AI to automate away.So I quit for a job at REDACTED MAJOR DATACENTER COMPANY. It's more technical and I'm a parasite for a major company automating everything else away. Probably be Cloud OPs or a Network Engineer soon.Anyone else have the same thought process as me? If you're getting paid $100k per year (and these L3's are) and you just sit around all day prompting AI and not doing shit your days are limited.

I do L3 sysadmin work in an MSP. One of our clients has a lot of data science guys that think they can claude their way through what I do, it's a shitshow.I don't see my job going away because the majority of people have no interest in learning how networking/filesystems/compute actually works and AI won't tell them their ideas suck, so they halfass build systems that will never work properly. One guy was trying to set his home dir to an efs filesystem and escalated to me when he was running into issues, turns out he and claude vibe coded some custom python file locking system to stop his stupid ass from modifying files during job runs. At no point did the AI tell him this whole idea is retarded and he needs to adjust his expectations.I don't see the job going away for a while because people see IT knowledge as janitorial work. It's like plumbers thinking their jobs are going away because there's a new chink septic snake on the market. People would rather pay someone to do the shit work than learn how to do it themselves, even with the right tools for cheap.

I work at a MSP as a sysadmin well, also seeing a lot of similar bullshit.I'm quite sure they'll push me out the door by end of year, although I haven't been told explicitly, because I've been asked to train a colleague which I think will be my replacement.The whole place is toxic and I feel people are acting shitty to me in particular to make me leave. The only upside is remote work.I don't know what to do next or what my options are. Join another MSP? Go work at an office and do what, still sysadmin or some other role?Full-remote work is impossible to find right now and job market is shit. I've been wondering if I shouldn't just leave IT and change careers.

Atleast you're not me, I actually wanted to get into L3 SysAdmin but somehow ended up with App Support Engineer L3 because my recruiter was a dumbass, and it's painful I missed my L2 SysAdmin works and you know I can't quit right now as the job landscape is hell.

I am sysadmin and we have no distinction between L1, L2,L3 or QA. I don't see our job disappearing any time soon for the sole reason you need someone with a know-how to apply AI at all

Printer disconnectedBasic shit like password resets are now portals, etc but as the world continues and more tech is shoved in, it outpaces what AI can 'learn' - we'll be more needed in the future
