Ive come to the realize that gnome is the best desktop environment on linux. Here is my reasoning:

>Looks super clean.
The GNOME desktop looks polished and feels very cohesive imo. Has nice animations as well.
>Stable and well supported
Default DE in many distros, regularly updated, wayland support.
>The gnome workflow is very good
On other DE's i sometimes had like 5 different browser window open. GNOME forces you to stay organized. That also makes it easier to actually stay focused on the thing youre working on. Ive been way more productive since i started using GNOME.
>Limited customization
This is actually a good thing. Fucking around with your desktop config is fun, but ultimately its a waste of time.

Its not actually perfect (nothing is desu) For example something i dont really like is the lack of a system tray. Also the alt tab behaviour took a little bit to get used to. But overall it does what it should do better than any other linux DE.
>>
can you show your actual gnome desktop while in use? every desktop env looks clean when nothing is being done.
>>
>>109414425
GNOME is controlled opposition for KDE
the devs are planted and funded to be as incompetent as possible making decisions that no sane person would make just so kde wouldn't have a monopoly
>>

there are no screenshots of gnome in use, because nobody who uses gnome does any actual work

I use it for music production, video editing, gaming, browsing the web basically. Tried a bunch of different stuff, but gnome just works best for me. I think its really good, and by far the most over hated DE

the hate is justified IMHO. You can use it and like it. I can honestly say from afar it is nice to look at. I enjoy the clean looking applications, however, when in use, the desktop itself pisses me the fuck right off.
>no desktop icons
>no task bar
>no window controls
adding them bogs it down to a snail's pace on even high end hardware.
>>
>>109414559
I usually have like 2-3 workspaces. I actually close programs when im done with them, im not editing a video and producing music and playing a game at the same time.
Thats also kinda what i mean when i say gnome forces you to be more organized, to work efficiently with it you cant keep too many programs open that youre not using. and i feel like thats not something you should ever want anyway, having a bunch of unused programs running in the background
>>

I can see why that would be annoying, but honestly i rarely ever used these features anyway.

Dont use desktop icons, searching for programs is usually easier for me since you dont have to switch from keyboard to mouse

If you wanna see the task at just press the meta key

I use shortcuts for window controls. meta+a for toggle maximization, and meta+q for closing the app

either Canonical did a miracle with gnome or its just not that bad. >why would you ever use alt-tab, gnome has proper workspaces
I can't remember if this is the default behavior, but on my machine a single Alt+Tab switches to the previously-focused application across all workspaces. So if I'm frequently switching between, say, the browser and the terminal, Alt+Tab is easier than Ctrl+Alt+Left and Ctrl+Alt+Right (or switching to the mouse, moving it to the workspace indicator, and horizontally scrolling), even though I have the browser and terminal in adjacent workspaces.

>Redpill: GNOME is the best linux desktop environment
I'm already redpilled. GNOME is the Linux DE, if you install Debian and select "Debian Desktop", you will end up with GNOME. Or if you are an enterprise customer, Canonical, RedHat, SUSE... they all come with the GNOME Desktop. Stable releases, doesn't crash and enterprise friendly. Sure, it's a bit slower on adapting new features, but when they come, they are stable.
Even the recent Benchmark shows, that in all Enterprise Applications, GNOME wins by a lot, but gaming is actually tied, but even in some Games, GNOME wins by ~5FPS. But KDEtards will seethe (picrel).
>SteamOS
But I feel like KDE could get better gayming perf, with Valve in the back, but thinking about it, they don't really care for the desktop, their gaming are running in gamescope, without a desktop.

You can simply enable an extension for desktop icons, if you really need them. Just like Ubuntu does it and they don't randomly "break". This just happens on rolling release distros, when the maintainers can't catch up, so this will never happen on LTS.
>>
>>109416217
yes but I dont like those, I have 10 fixed workspaces and it works. the configs were just not added to the UI

I just checked, and my keybinds aren't the default, but they're configurable without extensions. (I'm not sure how they interact with multiple monitors, though; I only have my laptop's built-in display right now. I do also have Settings -> Multitasking -> App Switching set to "Include apps from all workspaces", and I'm not sure which is the default there.)

In Settings -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Navigation, I have:
- "Switch applications" mapped to Alt+Tab (default is Super+Tab, but as far as I can tell, Alt+Tab has the same behavior by default, unless you map Super+Tab elsewhere, in which case Alt+Tab does nothing unless you explicitly map it here)
- "Switch windows" mapped to Super+Tab (default is disabled) (I mainly use this one for switching between different browser windows)

>thats why I made the "previous-workspace" extension with mod+backtick keybind
I was going to tell you there's a configurable "Switch to last workspace" keybind in the same section I described above, but apparently "last" means final/rightmost, not previously-focused. They really should add that to the stock list, even if they leave it unbound by default.

This confuses the jew. The jewish brain can’t comprehend more than one thing at a time. They lack the ability to have more than one coherent parallel thought. They need to be told what to do. Their natural state is to be slaves because they’re simply too stupid to do anything more. They’re a few iq points above niggers. Still within the range of mental retardation. slowest fucking boot ive ever seen, jesus christ you suck op. you are probably a dumb europoor zoomer so ill give you the benefit of the doubt for not experiencing the GOAT gnome 2.0 era, but windows 8 came out with this retarded tile UI and gnome devs, being the retarded autists they are, thought "mobile ui for desktop" was the future and went all in. they fucked the pooch on gnome3

ya, and if you file a bug report they'll probably fix it in the next release. gnome's answer to this problem would be "usecase for calendar?"
>>
>>109417577
Gnome has a calendar widget too and it works basically the same as the kde one. It just isn't functionally ugly.

niri is retarded, it brings back the floating wm concept of hidden windows, which is the twm's main advantage

make sure you have the remaining 2 sticks in ram slot #2 and #4 or #1 and #3, and not any other combination, then you have proper dual channel bandwidth

I just installed UBENTO a couple of days ago and I hate it. You have to open the settings to get to a volume mixer. What the fuck?

KDE Is unusable garbage thoughbeit. It looks like shit, it's laggy, has inconsistent interfaces / fonts, the devs are even bigger faggots than GNOME devs. Unironically KDE is heavier than GNOME. I can run GNOME on an x200. KDE was just slow as shit and unusable.

the default gnome behavior regarding window switching is weird. you can use
gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings
to list all window-related keybindings and make adjustments. for example, you can set alt-tab from switch-applications to switch-windows. also there is the cycle-windows keybinding. but this is not exposed in the settings gui, maybe in gnome tweaks, idk

except maya is only officially supported on alma, retard. i didnt list companies that only use those distros as a server tty. if i counted those, the list would be endless

I'd call Gnome garbage but at least garbage has some use and can be burned for heat

Can I freely fuck around with extensions to see which ones I'll like or do I risk bugs that necessitate a reinstall of the entire DE?
>>
>>109421207
>bugs that necessitate a reinstall of the entire DE
you'll be fine as long as you don't go installing random shit from github, get them from the extension site

OP is right. It just works.
>>
>>109422785
I prefer plasma for rolling release and gnome for point release, that way the extension maintainers can keep up, I've noticed some extensions on Arch can take a couple day to actually work, you don't have this problem with Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora
>>
>>109422785
>OP is replying to his own thread to validate his jew existence

It's true. I only update gnome after a week of its release on arch for this reason.

>>you mean bundling those icons together in a dropout menu? because it definitely does support tray icons (on ubuntu)
Yes, it USED to work like that. Now you won't always get them depending on the program, for example Dropbox is completely invisible to GNOME now
>>
>>109415345
Linus used KDE as soon as the licensing issue was resolved. Nowadays he just uses macOS depressingly

Yea, we in the industry call it coping.
