What's the verdict on the PS3 and Xbox 360 on a technical level?

Xbox GPU had unified shaders and "almost free" MSAAx2. PS3 had CELL.

PS3 has 256MB system RAM and 256MB VRAM.
X360 has 512MB unified RAM.

Xbox 360 Xenos was factually the first commercial GPU to have unified shaders, and remained the only one until Nvidia released the 8000 series in late 2006. It wasn't possible for any contemporary GPU to do what the 360 was doing in 2005. DX9 and eDRAM, 10MB, and the Xbox 360 does MSAA for free if you can fit your render targets within that 10MB limit

For gaming the xbox 360 is best but for media center use PS3 mogs 360. Snoy released a firmware update for the PS3 bluray drive as recently as 2025 to keep it compatible with the latest disks. A PS3 with a 1TB drive and custom firmware is suprisingly capable for watching videos, listening to music, and game emulation.

Playstation 3 was definitely better on the technical level, the mod scene was on par with xbox 360 but the ps3 was easier to mod, xbox 360 didn't have shit on ps3 in terms of exclusives though. I kinda wish I still had mine so i could install Yellowdog on it just for the fun of it. I remember playing Jetpack Joyride on it, along with Playstation Home. Last of Us, also Bioshock Infinite (definitely my favourite game of that generation)

More on the technical level I really liked XBMC. It still exists but under the name Kodi now, which sucks. As for design the XMB was better than the Xbox 360's dashboard (especially the blade dashboard)
>>
>>109416615
I imagine the PS3 OS was heavier than the 360 OS so that RAM was actually worse
>>
>>109416587
Yeah if you removed the HDD from PS3 it no longer boots. If you remove the HDD from 360 it will still work.
>>
>>109416894
>but the ps3 was easier to mod
One place the ps3 beats 360 is hard drive upgrades. On the 360 the drives are encrypted to the system but with ps3 you can just swap in any 2.5 inch computer drive and the system will accept it. One wonky thing about the ps3 though is that the drives can only be formatted FAT32.
>>
>>109416540
360 was superior CPU/GPU/unified RAM setup wise, PS3 was superior disc/build quality wise. Maybe you could get superior multi-thread perf on the Cell if you were a god programmer but most games weren't limited that way.
Kinda easy to see with the party chat or just any multiplat.
There was also some difference with gamma. Maybe 360 had a fucked gamma curve?
360 also launched with no HDMI and I think the 360 controllers were always broke shit.

>360

480mb unified ram available for games to be split anyway they liked, and most games split it like 100/380

>ps3
256/256 ram/vram
64/32 reserved by OS
192/224 available for games, and devs COULD borrow from system ram, but it required a shit load of work to get around the horseshit that was the PPE/SPE/ram/vram swapping bullshit so most didn't bother at all

so just like crapple's curryniggerbooks that's loaded up the ass with javascript hardware accelerators and is good at one specific task, it doesn't matter if no one cares about that one specific task and people actually want to do other things on it
>>
>>109416908
Probably. When I check memory usage on the PS3 using webman, it says there's less than 2MB free on the dashboard.
But then in game it also says less than 2MB free, so it probably aggressively unloads most of the OS.
One thing interesting about the unified memory of the X360 is that it is connected to the GPU, not the CPU, which means that cache misses are EXTREMELY costly.
I'm not sure if that was worth it. Having the RAM on the CPU side seems like it would have been a better configuration.

You couldn't even access the PS3's OS whilst playing a game at launch. The 360 always had the ability to bring up the overlay to look at friends' profiles and such, whereas on the PS3 it just gave you an option to quit the game. It took Sony until July 2008 to add in-game XMB access, but even then it was painfully slow and got even slower when playing a demanding game.
>>
>>109416540
people forget that the ps3 was supposed to be the premium option
>The launch MSRP for the PlayStation 3 was $499 (20 GB) and $599 (60 GB), while the Xbox 360 launched at $299 (Core/Standard) and $399 (Pro/Hard Drive model
i always prefered the ps3 aesthetically especially its menus and it had better games. but xbox 360 just had a better community since thats what everybody got. it was funner
>>
>>109416540
If MSAA can be free on console how come it's never free on a PC?
>>
Maybe I'm misremembering, but I remember when the PS3 and x360 were "current," the comparison screenshots always looked different. The colours and contrast of the screenshots from one console were always off, as if the gamma and saturation were not right. Why was that?
>>
>>109417159
I wonder why devs even cared about the 2D grass sticking out of the ground, to me it always felt super cheap
>>
>>109417379
there was a point where 2x msaa WAS damn near free and 4x was only a few percent of loss, depended on the game and card, but dx10/11 ruined all of that because "lmao we can't pipeline msaa into PBO renders"
since msaa dropped out of the rendering pipeline by necessity, gpu designers did not pursue further or continued hardware msaa handling.

>>109417159
sure, sure, but in that specific example the alpha dithering on the moonwalker and loss of long distance detail are noticeably worse
>>
>>109417431
Why is it some games like CS2 still have proper MSAA alongside upscalers whilst being DX11? Is it because valve are making an effort do it it?
>>
>>109417379
Because PC GPUs don't have an entire other die on the card that makes such things practically free - namely the 10MB of eDRAM that the 360 had.

>>109417431
>there was a point where 2x msaa WAS damn near free and 4x was only a few percent of loss
That was never, ever the case. MSAA has always been extremely heavy on PC. If you ever saw benchmarks suggesting otherwise than it was because the card was CPU-bottlenecked out the ass, which WAS common in the late 90s and early 00s. Even cards as weak as a Voodoo 3 (or Voodoo 2 SLI) were held back by CPUs of the time, which is why they overheat when paired with more modern CPUs in retro rigs and can run at their full potential (with nothing but passive cooling).
>>
>>109417379
The EDRAM had internal logic that could do the MSAA on its own.
>>
>>109417459
the peak pre-GPGPU era, the 7000 series, literally physically had hardware for 4x msaa handling on the card as part of the RBOs
if the card was big enough and the game not outside of it's pixel throughput limits, 2-4x msaa was basically free

you can call this underutilization if you want, but I'm also not going to call Crysis the typical example of use.

don't get me wrong, i still think cell was an interesting idea, i even have a blade server with two cell cpus, but it just makes no sense at all in a game console

the 360 was a 3 core 6 threaded monster.

the ps3 was single core, single thread and like 6 nigger cores that could do vector math really fast

360 had better gpu,
it was no wonder all the multiplatform games run way way better on the 360

The more superficial nonsense you can put on screen the more perceived power the system has. Only low power systems have to display bare bone worlds. It's a luxury thing.

People back then would brag up shit like that because it showed how "real" the game was and by extension how capable the machine running the game was, which is why they attack PS3 for having no grass. I remember reading articles about Crysis back in 2007 where they were talking about how realistic the bark on the trees looked. People really cared a lot about graphics and realism back then when things were still constantly improving hardware wise.

DESU, with how underutilized the CELL was up until the end of the generation and how many inferior ports the PS3 got as a result of its use (>>109417159,>>109417239) , this is kinda a moot point. It doesn't really matter outside of Linux tinkering if 90% of gamedevs decided its confusing architecture was a dead-weight as opposed to a strength.

Microsoft understood that ease-of-use for developers was the most important thing for cultivating a console ecosystem. They took what they learned from the original Xbox to make what was basically a regular PC, just running PowerPC ISA instead of x86, because PowerPC was all the rage those days.

Technically, when used correctly, the PS3 is more powerful. However, from a developer standpoint, this is one of the few times Microsoft was not too far up its own ass while Sony was miles up its own, and most of that power was left on the table by most game studios for the sake of ease of development.

If you consider the design of the PS2, it seems clear that the concept with the PS3 was similar. Sony likely thought that developers would build new engines for the PS3 based on what they had done on the PS2, but many developers were building engines for PC where it was easier to rebuild for the Xbox360. Having to basically do an entire different engine for the PS3 required considerable work.
So companies that went PS3 first had pretty good engines that used the hardware well, but companies that started on PC or Xbox360 and rushed the engine onto the PS3 had disappointing shit.

They're basically just PCs, so doing cross platform shit was far easier.

The first generation of Xbox 360 models were trash. No HDMI output and almost all of them died within a couple of years (red ring). Also it had no bluray player like the ps3.

A later Xbox 360 model was nice though and more fun for local multiplayer. PS3 was over engineered, expensive to make and games weren't really optimized for it.

PS2 owners kept saying Separate Ways made the bad graphics worth it.

According to Capcom, the character Leon was modeled with 10.000 polygons on the Gamecube, and on the PS2 the polygon count will be almost half of that number. By comparison, the Snake on Metal Gear Solid 3 has 4.000 polygons, 1.000 less than the PS2 RE4 Leon.

The textures, that on the Gamecube were on the 24bits color standard, will be lowered to 4 or 8 bits. On the other hand, the wider and superior memory bandwidth on the Playstation 2 will allow the use of more varied textures than that used on the Cube.

The PS2 had far-and-away worse hardware than the Xbox, while the PS3 rivals and even surpasses the 360 under ideal conditions. Horse shit in both respects. There are fleetingly few 1080p games on PS3 and the 360 was capable of it as well. Virtua Tennis 3 is one of the few complex 3D games which is 1080p on both platforms. Almost everything else is basic indie shit. Sony's hype about 1080p was marketing bullshit.
>muh gran turismo!!!
GT5 renders at 1280x1080 in its "1080p" mode. It also uses shitty post-process antialiasing, versus 4x MSAA in its native 720p mode.
>>
>>109434403
FM4 ran in 1080 too
>>
>>109434408
Nope. It's native 720p. The 1080p mode is just upscaled internally.

No, because the GPU is analogous to the GS in the PS2, but I am talking more about the VPUs.
VPU1 was often used to assist the GS, but that could be done with CELL as well, using one ore more SPUs to crunch data before sending it off to the GPU.

Xbox 360 had a much saner architecture, it was simply better at most things most of the time.

PS3 was kind of a weird amalgamation between slightly dated architecture and something so wonderfully unique and powerful that I can't help but like it more.

PS3 almost always loses in multi-platform showdowns, but it shines brilliantly in exclusives

Funniest part of the Uncharted screenshot is it's not even real. It's an ultra high res in-engine bullshot from a dev machine at maximum quality then downscaled for magazines and online publication, but they still can't get around the shit tier 192MB VRAM cap of the PSTriple.

it wasn't a traditional powerpc cpu. it was like a 6 core processor when 360 was a straight foward triple core and it was during the time of crysis when dual cores were just being utilized and single cores were still the norm.
>>
I used to go to GameSpot's System Wars, a constant theme was how Xbox 360 is 10% better looking than PS3, reality was that they both sucked donkey balls in that era with almost all games at 30 fps.
>>
>>109438375

Yeah i don't think that was the problem. My hunch is that it was a completely retarded design that, even now, grinds development down to a halt.

Apart from being COMPLETELY different.

yeah imagine the fucking code for that shit, they just made devs put 10x the effort to match what the 360 can do already and then forget it because nothing after had such a dumbassed architecture KEK
there is literally no reason why you would do it like this besides having sunk costs on a collaboration to make a stream processor with IBM... which is exactly what they did kek

The most common thing they were used for was MLAA, which was a shitty post-process antialiasing solution that looked like ass, but was essentially free if you weren't using the SPUs for anything else (and most third-party devs weren't).

You may be joking, but I do consider Xbox 360 retro since it didn't even get a HDMI port until 2 years after it launched and couldn't even output 1080p until it got a software update. Watch this video to get an idea just how different the world was back in 2005; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTs0AoaMYGA

The sliding timeline triggers people, but gen alpha are considering stuff like Angry Birds and Temple Run "retro" now. But jannies won't open a "midtro" board for stuff that's not the latest console but not "old enough".

As much as I know nothing about this and am a turbo brainlet giga retard, the 360 CPU arch makes more sense to me in a gaming console because at the end of the day, you just needed to get games out on the system. The CELL seems cool on paper, but isn't writing hello world like 100 loc and to actually utilize the SPEs to do the theoretical massive floating point throughput a massive pain where you're essentially writing two programs at once? The Xenon CPU seemed more traditional where you could just throw code at a compiler and call it a day.
>>
>>109416540
The 360 was the best console of that era. You could actually install games onto the hard drive. Not to mention the Indie games were fun. This is coming from a guy who grew up with the PS3. You could not even message your friends while playing some games because the memory couldn't handle opening up the XMB simultaneously. I never had that problem on the 360.
>>
>>109450729
just ignore how the ps3 doesn't have any busses fast enough to do this in a meaningful way
>>
>>109452357
imagine the original intel atom but 3c6t and with AVX instructions, this is basically the xenon CPU
it's very good for its intended use case
>>
>>109452339
>but isn't writing hello world like 100 loc
It's the same number of lines as hello world on the 360 unless you want to have the SPEs do it.

the RSX/GF7800 is closer architecturally to the NV2A than it is to the GeForce 8800.

>>
>>109455230
>... which is the whole point of Cell, to have SPEs doing things, otherwise it literally becomes a third of a 360?
Sure, but we were talking about "hello world".
You're not using more than a third of the 360 to do that. You aren't parallelizing multiple threads to do it.
The questioner was under the impression it was harder to do even the most basic things on the CELL. It isn't until you actually bring the SPEs into it.

>>109455223
You don't have to keep the OG Xbox in mind because that wasn't driving the design decision for the CELL.
Why did they pursue the CELL architecture when Xenon was so much better for developers? Because Sony's previous console was the PS2 and the CELL architecture was an extension or expansion of that design.
At the time it would have seemed to them like a logical progression that developers from the PS2 would be able (and willing) to shift into. That turned out not to be the case.
