PUFFED PACK QUESTION

I left my phone in my car for a few hours last Friday. When I got it out, the back had been torn off and had maybe an eighth of an inch gap to the phone chassis. IOW the battery had swollen enormously.

I assumed that meant it was fucked and was about to buy a replacement off Amazon but the swelling has gone down almost completely. I didn't even know that was possible.

Is this a sign that there is a leak? Should I replace the battery anyway? Or is this normal and I shouldn't worry about it?

You mean like partitioning your drive with let's say 100GB partition for Windows and the rest for D:\? Makes sense if and when you want to nuke your Windows installation you can still keep your animes on D:\ drive.

Not exactly; I run Fedora 44 Workstation, and I just setup Windows 11 in Boxes last night for the hell of it. Setup an offline account, and using a debloating tool to remove a bunch of garbage. Probably going play Runescape on it at some point. Though, if I dual-boot, I can use more hardware, and run games that require anti-cheat, and maybe get back into FL Studio. I currently do my gaming on a playstation, and do my web browsing and host a few servers from my desktop.

Follow up to this for anyone who cares, I ended up settling on Handy with the Moonshine Base model.
Total file size including the model is about 200MB. About 60MB of ram at idle, spiking up to a bit over a hundred during transcribing. Much more lightweight than the other piece of crap I was using, and it seems pretty accurate.

Any lightweight FOSS image viewer for windows that isn't malware? somehow the microjeets found a way to make their in-house photo viewer in w10 spike power and resource consumption under certain circumstances, I disabled that shit and my computer noticeably runs better but I'm stuck opening photos in paint.net now. I asked a chatbot to find me one and the very first thing it recommended was easily googleable malware kek

Are you asking how to host your VM image other than have it as a one big file? Yes, you can do a physical drive partition and assign that to your VM. Or do a Logical Volume Group on that partition and splice some volumes for your random VMs, I assume that's the smart way to do it.
(also remember to give your Windows VM the virtIO driver CD when installing so you can install it onto a virtIO drive instead of emulating SATA or whatever (what you do is give the VM two optical drives, one containing the Windows installer DVD and the other containing the virtIO driver CD))
>>
>>109418148
No, I'm asking if it's worth having a dual boot if I will almost never use Windows.

Not FOSS, but the old windows 7 photo viewer still ships even on modern windows if that interests you. You can easily enable it with a couple registry keys.

I want to use veracrypt to encrypt my PC but I'm paranoid and I have some questions.

1. I have windows 10 and it seems you don't need a clean install to put veracrypt. Does it encapsulate the whole system or does it interact with windows in any way? I don't trust Microsoft and I fear something bugs out and it destroys my data.

2. If my PC suddenly turns off, can my data be corrupted and getting my self locked out of the pc?

3. If I have multiple hardeives, what is actually being encrypted?

I'm afraid that I might have copied a line of code that had too many functions in a sequence and might trigger as plagiarized by the college software plagarism checker. I might get a 0 for it. I've to wait 1 month now until I get the results. I'm sweating bullets. Fuck CompSci so fucking much. This plagiarism thing is such bullshit because coding is nothing like writing a paper in English. You're much more limited to the variance and the fact that english is spoken to you from the day you're born so your English vocab is much much larger than your knowledge in code.

For my new laptop, I was thinking of switching to Apple.
Pros
>it’s not windows

Cons

The other option was to put in a new motherboard and memory because I have a framework 13.
Pros

Cons

>Installing Linux on a USB drive to install it onto another USB drive is retarded
You aren't "installing" anything, you are flashing an ISO image.
>I want a portable Linux where you can boot into it just by changing the boot order
I did that with a custom kernel. Could give you some pointers but it will require some heavy neckbearding:
-embed some features into the kernel image: USB support along with SCSI support, support for the filesystem in question
-embed the boot parameters into the image: "root=PARTUUID=blah rootwait"
And when it's finally compiled, place the image at \\EFI\boot\bootx64.efi
Had such a system on picrel, can't remember the partition layout exactly but I quess it was: small FAT32 EFI system partition, small'ish EXT4 for Linux and rest of the drive as exFAT for generic use and carrying data around.

Unfortunately, 4chanX's javascript index does not re-create them so those html elements only be accessible inside threads

you could look at the current dropping to near zero and disable power at that point, but then the problem becomes different
1. devices will keep sipping current to sustain themselves instead of running on battery while connected, depending on the device you wouldn't find a suitable cut off point without messing with the charging process itself
2. devices that will pull no current after being charged will eventually self-discharge to a point of requesting the full charging current to trickle charge for a fraction of a second

the correct solution is to either:
1. not worry about the 'damage'
2. adjust habits
3. learn soldering, pcb making to make a custom charging circuit
4. mess with an oscilloscope and a microcontroller, callibrating variables until it fits most of your usecases

Not a problem, just curious why. I backup my files to two places: a usb flashdrive, and a laptop hdd in an external enclosure that connects via usb. Copying the same files to the flashdrive takes SIGNIFICANTLY longer than to the HDD. Why's that? (with the ports and devices being used, the actual type of usb connection is not a factor here)

I want to "buy a laptop", in the stupid naive retardo way of an old xoomer who hasn't used a laptop in 10-2X years. Is there any hope of being able to install a basic Windows 10 LTSC iso on a modern laptop and have it justwerk? My memories of laptops back in the day was that driver support sucked ass if you didn't just use it with the pre-installed OS out of the box, but then every single thing installed on it would be malware. I don't want win11 ever, but I need a machine for windows dev.

Did something happen to chrome or specifically youtube on chrome very recently?
Noticed lag and unresponsiveness on chrome in the past week when going between tabs, and when I briefly try it on firefox it seems fine.
Searching around others don't seem to have any issues.
Didn't seem related to extension updates like ublock lite origin, but maybe I wasn't too thorough while testing.

I'll probably finally do the switch and get on firefox as main, but still curious if there's a very obvious answer to something changing recently.

Most likely the outlet has a bad ground connection. Try it with a 2 prong adapter and see if it goes away. If it doesn't that means there's a line side wiring fault in the PC. Which would actually be pretty dangerous.

You need to check the seed/leech ratio: if there are far more leechers than seeders, the seeders won't be able to serve everyone at top speed. The available bandwidth gets divided among the leechers until more seeders become available.

As you download parts of the file, you automatically start sharing the pieces you already have with others so they can download them too - and the same goes for everyone else.

For you to have such a high seed/leech ratio, it’s probably a file with low overall availability. You can check the availability in your client's stats to see how many people actually have the file at 100%. If that number is low or zero, it explains your ss, or what least is what I’m assuming is going on.

Good evening gents
I have this amd driver error that's driving me insane since i haven't been able to fix it for fuckin years now, any help will be truly appreciated.
I've got a windows 11, and an MSI laptop that's running rx6600m. It's not the best but been good enough for me. For about 2/3 years now, everytime i try to update the AMD driver i get an error 1603 by amd. When i use the AMD repair tool it momentarily fixes the issue by uninstalling the driver and downloading the latest one. But just after restart the screen becomes "glitchy" and choppy, as if it is lagging. And for some reason windows immediately starts auto installing a new display driver which is the old driver that causes the error 1603. After windows installs the older driver the laggy screen returns to normal.
I hope i adequately described my issue for someone to help me, PLEASE.
>>
>internet fine this morning
>leave for work for about 4 hours
>come back, no connected internet "unidentified network"
>windblows telling me "ethernet doesn't have a valid ip configuration"
>done all sort of the 'fixes' via cmd, reboot devices, restore router to factory settings
>reinstall network drivers
interestingly, plugging the ethernet to a laptop has it work
so the problem appears to be the pc itself, could it be possible that the hardware fried itself? how would that even happen between waking up from sleep?
though i do wonder if its a windows 10 and mobo issue, apparently the mobo doesn't natively support wifi for windows 10 and i had to nab a driver from dell
then again i've had this thing for over a year and this is my first time encountering this issue

cheap flash drives are slow as fuck since they use the worst quality flash chips.
look into chip binning to learn more, but basically good chips are hard to make, so they come out with varying quality, the best ones are sold in high end devices, while the bad ones end up in low end devices, which is how you can get fast 128G ssd's and slow as fuck 128G usb drives.
if you want a fast usb drive, get a usb m.2 enclosure and put an ssd in it

what's a good way to secure a jellyfin server? i want to help a friend open his so friends/family can use it, but i don't trust them to set good passwords. is there host-based whitelisting or something that can be done? ip-based doesn't make much sense these days
>>
>>109457675
yeah, wouldn't recommend opening up ports on a non tech person's household. Use something like Tailscale instead and add the jellyfin server to the tailnet.
>>
>>109457675
Create a separate network segment for the jellyfin server and have him join his household LAN to it over VPN. Ask AI for examples. I would never directly expose any of these household web apps to the internet.
>>
>>109457731
a vpn is what i'd use for my own stuff, but i can't really do that for the people who might use it. i'd have enough trouble guiding them through installing wholphin on their tv's alone.
even if i wanted to, how would that work? they don't have home servers or an openwrt router i could setup vpn software on
>>
>>109457779
Any computer on the network can function as a VPN gateway. It's marginally more convenient if it's the router, but you can just add a static route to whatever device has the VPN connection.
>>
>>109457855
seems the wireguard android app can run on android tv's, though i'm not sure how easy it'd be to teach someone to use it before opening wholphin. i agree this'd be the safest option.
i saw other options like totp, fail2ban, known bad ip blacklists, but unlike a vpn they wouldn't save it if jellyfin had a vuln that didn't require logging in. there's also some authenticating reverse proxy stuff which i haven't looked into before (all my own stuff is over ssh or wg only), but idk if wholphin supports something like that
>>
>>109457984
It would need to be a computer where you have pretty good control over the network stack. You probably don't want his Android TV just fencing all its network traffic off your internet, and that would probably break apps in his house anyway.
>>
>>109458143
you misunderstand, i'm talking about a home server i've setup for a friend at his own place, not my own server. also i'm not intending to route internet traffic through wireguard, unless you're saying the android wg app only supports making itself the default gateway and not an independent network like how i'd normally use it
>>
>>109458203
looks like "wg tunnel" has everything i'd need to do this over wireguard for android tv's. not as convenient as just using wholphin but probably should just use a vpn. i saw lots of options it's probably not going to be any more convenient to use. wg tunnel set to auto start with split tunneling set to only apply to wholphin should be easy to use though i'd say i'll have to visit people to set it up for them, which i'd prefer to have avoided

I have one laptop and I got a new laptop with a same-sized SSD. I want to just clone my current SSD into the new one and go from there.
What's the easiest way? Right now in my mind the way to do it is dd my disk onto a temporary external drive with enough space (about ~1.5GB) and then DD that external drive onto the new laptop's SSD. But is there a way to do it laptop-to-laptop directly?

My root system is btrfs so I could also maybe set up the partitions and filesystems on the new drive and then btrfs-send it, but I'd need to replicate the partitions manually and then manually handle each subvolume, while dd-ing the drive just works to copy everything in one go. Hmm.

Yes, and they are also known as "integrated" and "discrete" GPU.
Also if and when your OS and GPU drivers support it, you can get both out of a single physical output, gaming laptops do that by default.

I'm trying to stream for my friends on discord, I'm on linux.
I can stream, but it doesn't let me select a specific window as an audio source, and instead it's either I select ALL desktop audio or NO desktop audio.
if I have audio enabled for the stream then if people in the voice call speak they hear themselves echo in the stream, and I don't want that.
I've tried the official discord client, vesktop, equicord, equibop, webcord, goofcord, datcord, and NO client I've tried has let me select a single window as an audio source.
am I just fucked if I want to stream on discord?

Linear tactile and clicky are still the main categories and you should be able to find linears easily. Creamy/thocky are placebo descriptions of sound, silent should be self-descriptive (comes with some silencing mechanism like dampeners - doesn't exist on clickies), lubed means factory lubed (a good thing unless you're autistic enough to want to lube them yourself which is retarded)
Weight is determined by spring strength, decent switch listings will often list both the activation force and bottom-out force, though springs are pretty standard and can be swapped (if you can be bothered to open a few dozen switches and swap the springs)

Ask in /mkg/ for actual recs, "a light linear switch" is a perfectly normal thing to ask for and should easily get you some good answers
>>
>>109466235
If you genuinely don't need a lot then yeah sure
Main downsides you have to use macos and only 8GB memory. For just watching videos and browsing social media both of those should be entirely fine

I use my hosts file to block some porn boorus and stuff, it's obviously not foolproof but the fact that it requires an extra ~20 seconds to enter my sudo password, edit the file etc. is often enough to stop myself from impulsively opening it to look at anime girls at random times of day
Is there anything similar I can do on a non-rooted android phone (so no actual hosts file access), without using the android VPN feature (because I use an actual VPN and android still to this day only supports a single active VPN provider)? And without being some ad-ridden closed source spyware masquerading as a helpful app.

>>
>>109466648
What do you mean leaking your shit? The only thing IRC leaks by default is your IP address, and modern servers don't display that. Hiding it is called cloaking. If you're not sure then just use a VPN to guarantee safety until you figure out how it works.
It's not like an IP address is hyper sensitive though, unless you're afraid some kid will DDoS your home or something

IRC is decades old and while the protocol is system the software around it and the typical practices have definitely changed over the years so a lot of stuff might be outdated or specific only to some server types or whatever

The new "trust" system with the captcha/cookies is absolute ass cancer. "IP temporarily blocked for abuse" doesn't actually mean your entire IP was blocked, it means that browser's cookies (in combination with your IP) are now no longer trusted and so 4chan blocks your browser.
I have no idea how to regain "trust", I guess you have nothing to lose by resetting the cookies but there's zero guarantee that brand new fresh cookies will be in any way better.

There have been many many questions in /sqt/ in recent weeks/months from people who, for example, can post on one desktop browser but cannot post on their phone, or vice-versa, or can post on one browser but not another.
Yes it's extremely cancerous but I'm not aware of anything that can be done. Buying passu probably helps. Or move to an altchan or something lmao.

>use verify email address for session
>captcha invalid or expired
This I'm not sure, I have no idea how verifying your email works when you lack trusted cookies. It could be yet more fuckery still intentionally preventing you from posting, or it could be the captcha genuinely being broken in this case. Try later maybe, or try in a different browser with the same verified email.

Working at a small startup. There is a piece of shit legacy software we have to use, that our team needs access to occasionally. It requires windows to run. Most of the team are on mac or linux, so we're looking at some sort of virtual desktop solution so whichever one of us needs to access it at any given point can just login and go.

At my previous job, we used amazon workspaces, but those are both slow and expensive. Are there any better solutions currently?
>>
>>109469218
A VM would be my choice. Does the startup really absolutely have to use it (since presumably everyone in the startup is equally annoyed, and it's not mandated by higher-ups)?

A decade ago I worked in a web shop making government SaaS and we had to (manually) test our shit on Internet Explorer and Edge (I remember our office literally celebrating when our company officially dropped support for IE6). For this we downloaded official VM images off microsoft and just ran them in virtualbox. It was slow as SHIT because everyone had like 2014-era macbooks that would thermal throttle the moment you opened two google chrome tabs and running the entirety of Windows 10 in a VM brought them to their knees, but with a modern laptop it really should be very feasible.

yeah unfortunately, it's a tool that is a defacto monopoly in the industry we service, which we "have" to maintain an integration with

will see if I can spin up a W10 or W11 VM that will run it "good enough" but unfortunately it does need updated every couple of months so someone will have to maintain the VM - that's why I was hoping a virtual desktop somewhere would be viable
>>
>>109469627
Just make a snapshot you boot from. Maintaining it should be as simple as opening the VM, updating the tool, and making a new snapshot for everyone to use.
It's annoying but it doesn't sound like the end of the world, since it's mandatory.

charge cycles are what cause most wear on batteries

if it's consistently bypassed the battery and designed properly, it's mostly been unused so you aren't losing much capacity over time
>>
>>109471897
Use batteries that are well characterized, don't set the charge point too high, and don't touch the battery while it's in the charging cradle unless it drifts more than like 5-10% off the charge point. The only reason lithium batteries don't last 10-20 years in everything is mfgs keep trying to scam adults on battery life specs.

scripting language advantages
>often simpler syntax (the interpreter takes care of everything so you can write less code)
>sometimes come with live environments/REPL for interactive writing
>don't need to bother compiling as long as you have the interpreter (one less step when running a quick script, no worrying about linking and binary compatibility if distributing to others)

compiled language advantages
>almost universally more performance when doing the same thing
>not related to compilation, but coincidentally often come with stronger type systems so you it might be easier to avoid bugs in your program

In other words if you don't need performance at all, then pick whatever language makes it easiest to write
For quick scripts interpreted languages make it a lot easier to just whip something up and execute it, or even piece it together in a REPL. For shit that will be doing lots of work and you want it to be done fast, you'll need to compile it. There's a relatively wide grey area in-between where in medium sized projects, a scripting language's features provide little advantage but you don't really need max performance either, and then you literally just pick whatever language you prefer writing or reading
>>
>>109472778
Use them when you are most likely just running other programs, collecting their outputs and making sense of them. Or when you are writing simple utilities.

Otherwise, USE COMPILED LANGUAGES.
>>
>>109472778
Use scripting languages by default and only engage with the compiler when script bindings are unsatisfactory. As in not concise enough or too much overhead. Sometimes I'll start out writing a bash script and end up kicking it over to python where there are better bindings, or write a tiny helper program in C that makes the exact API calls I want and relays the results in a way I know won't change. Or kick python over to C or rust if I care about being able to handle literally every possible error case.
>>
>>109472778
I'm glad to see that there's no consensus. I just thought I was dumb. Guess I'll stick to C.

Trying to make a timelapse out of dashcam videos with FFmpeg, without taking hours, but I can't figure it out.
I have 6 hours of footage in mostly 1 minute HEVC MP4 clips, put into a concat file. This works, but takes literally forever.
fmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i list.txt -an -filter:v "setpts=PTS/120" -c:v libsvtav1 -preset 8 -crf 50 output.mkv

Almost all the time is spent in the decoder. Is there any way to make it skip over frames completely without decoding them? These videos are ~90GB altogether so being able to seek instead of read consecutively would save tons of time.
Some sites online said to use
-discard nokey
or
-skip_frame nokey
with other options, but they don't do anything. I also saw a clever way to use a bitstream filter that drops packets, but doesn't work because discard nokey is broken.

wine doesn't translate any syscalls. windows is different to linux, windows programs don't touch syscalls for most normal programs, instead they import libraries like kernel32 to make the syscalls for them, so wine doesn't need to handle syscalls. it's why kernel anticheats are hard to support, as they're one of the few things which do make direct syscalls
