I've been trying to be more private for the past 3 or 4 years. Got an android, lineageOS & only using F-Droid. Got linux, only using FOSS/FLOSS software. Delete cookies on browser close, using mullvad and librewolf and all that.But does any of this matter?I'm tired of having to make an account or getting a credit card and worry about denying targeted marketing and rejecting optional cookies and needing to use KeePass to log into all my accounts every time I open them up. Checking each app's permissions and data sharing before I download it.I found my old iPod touch, 4th gen, chrome back, it brought back memories. And when I was a kid I didn't worry about privacy. I thought "oh that app looks fun I'll download it!" and I downloaded it and had fun. Now I worry about whether I'm being tracked, what's marketed to me, etc.And seriously. What's gonna happen if I just give up on privacy. The only two groups I'm concerned about are the government and corporations. The government will get my data regardless of what I do (MYSTIC, RAMPART-A, DISHFIRE, etc.) like there's no getting around that one, anyone who thinks they're being private from the government is delusional. The government can see all your shit they just don't give a shit if you're buying drugs they just wanna make sure you're not the next MLK or something.And corporations? So what. But at least they're happy.You can't go back, I tried that with stock android and windows, but you will always feel like being shoulder watched, your VPN or Tor doesn't matter, when you are on an unsafe host. But you know too damn well, that privacy isn't black and white, just don't cuck yourself too much. Also, you can use multiple browsers, just use 1 for logins. I still use proprietary apps, but I try to avoid spyware.

If your standard is "unless no one can collect anything about me, there's no point," then yes, you'll conclude it's futile. And it's good having compatibility with most normal software instead of having to use WINE and so on.I guess I do need to just accept the fact that 2011 isn't coming back, we've been forced to move on. So be a little smarter, but don't obsess. And I think our parents were right, what they said when we first made a facebook, don't post anything on the internet you wouldn't want your grandma to see. Tech has definitely pushed us to constantly broadcast our thoughts. They have a financial incentive. Now kids constantly overshare and trauma-dump. People have been conditioned to keep nothing inside. it's sad!

The government promises to respect certain ideas (free speech, guns, etc.) because they're forced to by their weakness compared to the population and its organization. But the moment they are no longer threatened by the people, those rights are chipped away at. The constitution is just a piece of paper if nobody defends it. Nobody has a right to privacy unless they're willing to defend it, and most people don't care. There's some pushback like against flock cameras and the patriot act, but usually not enough to affect real change.
