the success of c is almost entirely due to it's goal to compile anywhere (windows and unix variants)
all the compromises and "footguns" that c has are intentional features. they help paper over the underlying differences between environments
this project only cares about a subset of unix, so why bother keeping the mental model of c when you can implement a runtime that facilitates a better model, like python or ruby?

The biggest reason is because drew keeps shilling it while not admitting to being himself, but then has a hilarious hissy fit and drops the mask as soon as someone points any flaws of drew's or hare's. This means drew never let any community properly engage with him, and only ever acted aggressive against people pointing out issues with it rather than trying to work out how it could be improved.

Hare itself has nothing at all to offer. It doesn't have any features you can't have natively or trivially in pure C, while also not having any features that may make other languages more attractive than C. Meanwhile it's slower than C, which is 90% of the reason to use C in 2026, and has 0 ecosystem, which is another 9% of a reason to use C.

Basically, hare would have better been implemented as a C library than as a language.

It doesn't have to be that way. It can in fact still be steered to be useful, but that would require drew to get his head out of his ass and identify his core audience, then start dialogues with people to inventory e.g. the current pain points of the audience he is trying to go after, then do R&D to find ways to make hare address these problems, keeping in mind that it must be a feature that can only be added at the core language level, and not something that a library in C could fix for his C user audience.
