What linux or bsd flavor should I run in a VM if I want to read picrel alongside a working environment?
Was thinking either FreeBSD or Slackware.

Linux is a VM

Careful with WSL. It mounts all your drives under /mnt/. It's not isolated like a normal VM.
If you don't want that, edit /etc/wsl.conf and add:
[automount]
enabled=false

Any linux distro should work fine. The handful of commands that don't work anymore have drop in modern replacements, you just need to figure out what they are.
>>
>>109430876
FreeBSD would probably be closer to the Unix described in that book.

Too bad FreeBSD tries very hard to keep up with all the nonsense that Linux does for the sake of catering to spoiled Linux users. OpenBSD and NetBSD are the true Unices.
