So it turns out Si/C batteries are mostly a scam, with an alarming number of Si/C phones having 10%-13% of their advertised capacities artificially capped because they degrade faster than Li-Po. Newer Si/C phones don't suffer from this, which could explain why Samsung waited as long as they did to adopt Si/C.

Hi there /g/. I wanted to ask about smartphones, and it seems like this thread is the right place. My problem is that for a long time (about 14 years), I haven't needed a new phone and have been using my Samsung Wave II. However, a few years ago, I realized it's no longer a viable option for phone calls, MMS, browsing the internet, and checking maps. As someone who is tech-savvy, I somehow missed the smartphone craze and am not really up to speed on what to look for when choosing one. Could you guys recommend something based on my needs? My budget is around $800, but I prefer the most cost-effective device, so cheaper options would also be appreciated.

I'm looking for something that offers:
- a complete replacement for my wave II (obviously)
- mid to large display for checking the internet/maps
- ease of use when browsing YT or other social shit
- good app "compatibility"? Meaning a phone that can easily download and run apps, with a massive library to choose from (I'm not very knowledgeable about apps especially when it comes to OS other than iOS)
- a good camera with large internal storage (for videos and music)
- water resistance (something that can withstand rainy weather or a drop in the toilet)
- a fast processor
- future proofing for a good 6-8years (specifically, the ability to run new apps down the line without needing to upgrade)

I would also want to buy a smartwatch to pair with the phone so I can check calls on my wrist and not bother pulling out the brick itself (so a combo recommendation would be even better). Also some headphones to listen to music.

I've used my Wave II for a long time, but I also own an iPad Pro and an iPhone SE (which I only used for specific apps, and it mostly sat idle for a few years). Apple has a great OS and excellent ease of use, but my SE is stuck on iOS 15.8, so I can't use it for my everyday tasks anymore.

I don't know why this isn't a bigger deal, I'd assume because the video is in Chinese so it probably won't reach a wide enough audience. Realmeme P4 Power with a "10000mAh" cell and relatively weak SOC got an endurance rating of 25 hours, which is pretty bad when you take into account that the OnePlus 15 with its non-gimped 7000mAh cell and flagship SOC scored only 4 hours less despite having a whopping 30% smaller battery. Personally I was always suspicious of the capacity because my OnePlus 13 feels more like 5000mAh than 6000mAh. I'm glad I turned out to be right and that it wasn't just battery autism. That said I'll probably still import a Find X phone to the US when this shits the bed. They seem to be less egregious with gimping their batteries now.

I consider getting one of the following
- Xiaomi note 15
- nothing phone 3a
- Motorola Moto G85 5G
they seem to offer the most on a low budget

the Xiaomi is a good chunk cheaper than the other two, so I wonder whether they offer anything that the Xiaomi doesn't. I know its full of bloatware, that's a detriment, but the battery life does seem to be even better
>>
>>109437438
I've seen guides but they're outdated. Rule of thumb is buy from Wondamobile and TradingShenzhen, avoid Giztop. Only buy the Chinese variant of a phone if you really want to save money and don't mind dealing with software idiosyncrasies and certain shit not working. You can really only use chink phones on T-Mobile because they have no device whitelist from what I remember. Not sure if the same applies for their MVNOs. Do keep in mind that if something goes wrong with the phone after you get it, you're at the mercy of a 3rd party warranty which basically means you're kind of fucked and down a shitload of money unless you do a CC chargeback.
>>
>>109437517
Check what 5g bands your provider use, then check gsm arena advanced search.
Best chinese brand is probably oppo atm. when it comes to ui/speed/less bloat.
>>
>>109437780
I'd personally avoid Oppo. Their website has had the "OnePlus look", overhaul but their phones bootloaders, like Samsung, are locked and they're not scene friendly like OnePlus once were. If you're not bothered about this then go for it as ColorOS is on par with anything other OEMs produce.

Yes, I know and now they've abandoned the rest of the world apart from India (not a given that they'll stay in that market) and China, the OnePlus website is going to be shuttered and the Oppo's new sales site has been given a Scandinavian makeover and looks just like the old 1+ site did.

Don't now how you can recommend a device that hasn't been released yet, a device that has a Samsung titanium panel that will crease just like the Fold 8's screen does and a device that has allegedly missed it's September 2026 release schedule because of production issues.
>>109438109
If you're used to OneUI then the Fold but the screen preference is up to you. I'd probably go for the Ultra with the silicon-carbon battery. Or, if you do want a change, wait another 9 months for the untested Apple device.

I think it's great, but be wary that my baseline is an older phone (lg v40 thinq) so my opinion is skewed. It has a cool feature that lets it stop charging after it hits a certain percentage, to which I set at 85% and even then it can last me a day or 2 with doing nothing too heavy. I haven't tested it by listening to youtube (morphe) for the duration of my work hours, though.

>>
>>109439347
They're still available to buy on Amazon in the UK but you're going to be paying a premium for a 16gb/512gb version.

OnePlus 15 Tri-chip AI smartphone with Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen5, 6.78" 165Hz Display, 7300mAh Battery, Triple 50MP Flagship Cameras, 16GB RAM+512GB Storage, Infinite Black - 3 Year Extended Warranty https://amzn.eu/d/0g2BknIA

Either there or the auction sites. With the ColorOS update due locking the bootloader, I'd give them a miss but choice is yours. I've never trusted OnePlus since they fucked over the scene by making their MSM tool credential login only and merging OxygenOS with the ColorOS codebase.

The best options so far seem:
80EUR for a new """OEM""" display and back for my 4a
175EUR for a refurbished Pixel 5
300EUR for a new Pixel 8
300EUR for a used iPhone 13 mini in good conditions and a new battery

All the functionalities you ask for are available from literally any phone at any price point, with the camera's quality being more price-dependant. Future proofing is basically impossible on a phone: you get 4 to 7 years of updates depending on the manufacturer, and then it's only a matter of time before your bank app starts asking for a more updated OS. By that time the battery is probably very degraded anyways, especially if it's one of the new Si-C ones. If you're happy with the iPhone get a new one.

thank you for the reply. That's my beef with new technology. I mean 4-7 years isn't so bad, I think. I use an iPad and iPhone on a regular basis but not for calls. I really like the iOS, but I have close to zero experience with Android, though I've heard lots of good things about it. My main problem is that I want a phone for outdoor use. I am kinda torn between iPhone and Samsung since these "new" brands like NothingPhone, Oppo, Xiaomi etc are foreign to me. Also, Samsung and Apple have a strong standing and history, which translates to solid OS support for some time.

I've had a s23+ since it came out but it got the green line of death all of a sudden yesterday so I'm looking for a replacement.
Should I go for another expensive samsung phone or are there any better options?
My cousin said he has a poco f6 pro, and the recent poco f8 really does seem like a great bang for your buck option.
My biggest worry about switching from Samsung to xiaomi, aside from the awful UI with ads and shit, is that I also have galaxy buds and a watch, and I don't know how well these would work over there. Also, I don't know how easy it would to be transfer all the files and apps from Samsung to a xiaomi phone.
Transferring files/apps from my old Samsung phone to this s23+ was pretty seamless when I got it.
>>
>>109446117
>isn't so bad, I think
It all comes down to anyone's use case: if you were content with a device from 15 years or so ago there would have been no reason for you to upgrade, so there's that.

Both OS are pretty much interchangeable at this point, it all comes down to preference. Truth is that for the vast majority of people the vast majority of tasks don't require a particularly powerful device because we have more than enough computational power in our hands to communicate, browse the internet, and watch high quality videos, and we have it since a dozen years ago.

All the Chinese brands and manufacturers are just that, a logo and some aesthetic choices: smartphones are a commodity and there's little more than a thin layer of appearance that distinguishes them, while they all pick from the same pool of components trying to hit some predetermined price point. To be clear this is true for Samsung and others too, although less for Apple. Their standing history means very little because all of those manufacturers fucked up in the past and handled said fuckups in an even worse way thant the fuckup itself, so you should trust no company regardless, it's a roll of dice anyways.

Of course to those that enjoy playing videogames on their smartphones the improvement in performance has value, and to those that like to take photos the newer cameras may warrant an upgrade, but if you're not in any of these categories you shouldn't overthink your choice more than ensuring that you're getting good value for the money you want to spend, assuming you even care about it.
>>
>>109446361
Thanks for the reply. By any chance, what is your recommendation when it comes down to a solid smartphone for everyday usage? Comething cost effective? I've read up that samsung galaxy (but with snapdragon processors) are fine but I think the newer models are too pricey.

NTA, but pretty much anything that isn't bottom bin will do you well. You can get a fairly nice Galaxy or equivalent phone for ~$300-400 and have it satisfy pretty much all your needs. Even better if you're eBay savvy and can sniff out a used/refurb'd phone for cheaper.

I just got a Motorola Edge 70 and I'm looking into debloating it, but it's the first time I'm considering tinkering with a phone like this.

Has anyone had any experience with this specific model? Any feedback on available methods (canta+shizuku/ADB/etc)?

Also any other suggestions would be appreciated on customising/making UI as close to stock android as possible. I've used Nova Launcher before on Samsung and LG phones, I like the UI's to be as minimalistic as possible.

Can I get a sanity check please?

I'm looking to upgrade my Blu R1 HD phone (yes, made it 10 years), since it seems t-mobile finally cut it off it from the network.

For ~100usd, this is the best I could come up with:
https://www.gsmarena.com/umidigi_note_100-14271.php
there's also this:
https://www.gsmarena.com/umidigi_g9_5g-13284.php
but it's an extra 15usd, but doesn't seem worth it.

Is there a better option?

I looked at referbs, but the official ones are too expensive and third party ones have long lines of complaints, and spec sheets aren't that different on paper, but the devil's in the details (implementation).

What is a good budget phone for around $250 USD or less available in Freedomland? I don't game and mostly just surf the web, read, music, and video chat. OS support life and quality are major factors.

Please no Samsung. Last phone was a budget Samsung and they do planned obsolescence through software updates. Phone was fast with base firmware, first major OS update killed performance, second major OS update made the phone unstable due to OOM issues that should not have existed. My understanding is that they do the same with their flagships but the flagships can at least power through most of it, they just become shittier.

Anons i have the choice to get the samsung s26 ultra for good price but it's blue colour. is that shit marketed for women? I didn't see the phone in person but it looks kinda gay
>>
>>109456977
Most cases that tend to be more for men hide the color so why do you care? Arguably the fact that you care at all makes you seem more like a women. Just get a standard Spigen case or anything dark tone and be done with it.
>>
>>109457102

Hiding an ugly phone in a case in hope noone notices is the same as dressing up as a women with lipstick and try to pass as a female. It's still visible and you're just coping at this point. Just buy a proper colored phone, what are you, poor?
>>
>>109457181
>hiding an ugly phone
>he thinks a case is for fashion
Bro youre quite literally thinking like a woman. The color doesnt matter because the case will cover it. Dudes choose utilitarian cases more often than not which generally means covering nearly every aspect of the phone except the screen and maybe the buttons assuming theyre not also covered with rubber. The fact that you even consider it as "dressing up" your phone and not "protecting your phone" already places you squarely as someone with a feminine mindset.
>>
>>109457201

>>
>>109459697
Samsung refuses to officially say what’s causing it but a lot of experts that have private repair shops have opened up and shown what happens internally and it’s due to some type of overheating and melting of some type of connection between the main board and the screen. So unfortunately, it’s not only software related. The best guess people have in all fairness is that the software update overheats the device, causing the hardware malfunction. I just ordered a S26 ultra in Black because I wanna see if this is gonna happen. I wanna personally see how hot this phone is gonna get with the update.

why does the mandatory pin entry happen more frequently than the once every 72 hour it claims it should be happening?

why the fuck are active notifications on the locked screen squashed right into the bottom of the display when there's all the other screen space to use? it's a nightmare for one handed operation.

who the fuck is making these decisions????

How's the importing experience in the US for any anons that have imported a chink phone here? My plan is to import a Find X phone once my OnePlus croaks but my main concern is aftermarket service. Youre responding to a jeet bot that's dedicated to spam the same things over and over. That said the only reason the crease is becoming a thing is because Apple is finally releasing a foldable and people arent aware that Samsung also makes their screens so they assume Apple is getting rid of it. Honestly a stupid conversation because anyone that has lived with foldables for years now understands that at some point you start filtering the crease from both your touch and view.

>>
>>109472374
Why wouldn't it be?
>>
>>109472374
I left my pixel 7 today for a Nothing phone 4a pro. The screen was lifting off on one corner and it would get stuck doing this. at times I would have to whack it to get it to act right or lock and unlock it. Not to mention how much it'd over heat in real pixel fashion

Hard to say, I'm in a similar situation and I'm tempted to drop the headphones jack requirement just because it's making everything so difficult: you can find an audiophile-approved adaptor, which is in essence a DAC between a usb-c and an audio jack, and then you have the freedom to tailor the rest of the device to other requirements.

Also in the same boat of needing a headphone jack - at work i listen to stuff all day to block out work noise

How has the modern world gone to such shit that new phones can't provide this. And no i'm not wearing faggot bluetooth buds or USB DAC

Really seems the only option is Sony for high end

The labeling is disingenuous but the charging is still way faster than anything from western brands+Samsung and Sony. All the proprietary chargers keep the heat concentrated mostly in the brick and not the battery itself which is nice. Qualcomm's fast charging standard doesn't do this.

How long do you keep your phone anons?

I usually upgrade every 4-5 years even when security updates end and I have my information in there, but I'm not a retard so that balances it out my history with phones

Sony Ericsson W200 (family phone)
Xperia M2 (hand me down)
Xiaomi mi a2 Lite (hand me down)
Note 10 Pro (first phone I bought)
Motorola Edge Fusion 50
>>
>>109476299
>How long do you keep your phone anons?
Until I break it or it starts to feel slow. I'm a firm believer that you should keep your phone until destruction.

I had a OnePlus 3T for years before I sadly broke the display or charger port (forget which, it's probably fixable still if I cared).
Then I got a Pixel 7a because I heard good things about the bloat-free software that doesn't come with a bunch of bullshit and also it was reasonably priced for a mid-range phone.
Now my 7a has shit battery life and is starting to slow down a lot so I'll probably end up upgrading to the Pixel 11.

Before this I did the iPhone thing and had a 5s and 3g. Did that long enough to figure out I don't want to be in that ecosystem anymore.

Based
Fair same here, the main reason why I upgraded is because my screen broke (had it since 2022) and it was starting to be slow plus I was charging it 2-3 times a day.

Even though I don't invest that much in phones it's intriguing to see how fast and how much the budget phones play catch up, the main things I care about are, Good enough camera, good battery, fast charging, NFC, OLED screen, plenty storage

though it's retarded how even budget phones are acting like flagship now the Moto has
>No 3.5mn jack
>No Slot for MicroSD
>No IR sensor

Only thing that has a 3.5mm jack and good DAC is LG V60, but it's a little over 6 years old and is worse than the 10a aside from the quad DAC, expandable storage and build quality considering it's technically still a flagship. 10a+a dongle would be your best bet.

That's unenforceable. We live in an age where perverts buy glasses off of Zuckerberg that can record your every move.
>>
>>109478866
you made that up, your opinions are not facts. it is very much so enforceable. places with paid entry have metal detectors and are allowed to ban cameras. camera flash can harm old art and antique museum pieces. DSLR cameras are not allowed in MANY places, if you actually traveled you would know this. smartphones with cameras are not banned in those places.

Ive been using it for 24 hours now, the crease is basically not there. This is the first folding phone I bought but I tried some earlier folds and the issue with the crease was the fact that they were so deep they would mess my touch screen inputs.

For example I tried Arknights but if I tried to do anything near the crease before it was horrible. But I havent had any issues with the fold 8 so far.
