So are any of those GBA SP look emulator consoles worth while? If so, which?
>>
>>109435707
I just bought a RG 40XXV for about $75 it's like an older raspberry pi in performance.
Plays psp, psx, GBA, portmaster games. I have VNDS games running on it. Feels cheap and light weight but it's much better than a modded refurbished GBA which costs many times more and needs to be kept plugged in to the wall.
>>
>>109435735
For reference it's the same exact hardware in a different form factor.
>>
>>109435735
That's what I mean. As much as I would like to mod my old gbas for fun. I think they just aren't practical in terms of time/money/effort for the final product.

Do the emulator things really feel cheap in comparison to a 20+ year old gameboy?
>>
>>109435707
Yes. The one you linked. Anbernic devices are pretty good.

>>109435763
>Do the emulator things really feel cheap in comparison to a 20+ year old gameboy?
No. If anything it's the opposite and makes the GBA feel like a shitty $10 toy. On release the GBA was $100, if these were released at the same time they'd be worth $400 given their capabilities.
>>
>>109435707
Anbernic devices are pretty good, though they're pretty much the same device in a different shell. I don't like CFW like Rocknix or Knulli though, there's too much shit on it, and other options are either unsupported on a specific device or go too far with minimalism.
Expect average battery life of 6 hours.
If you want a GBA SP clone then go for RG SP. If you want 4:3 then RG35XX SP. Note that some people reported that the plastic on hinges cracks. If I recall correctly it's most common with transparent units.
The only thing that really sucks for me is playing outdoors - all chinkhelds I had have this issue where when it's sunny, it's impossible to play anything even on full brightness unless you manage to find a good shadow or go inside. My phone display seems better when I'm waiting for a train or bus, which is why I'm waiting for 8bitdo FlipPad to become available in black color. If that works for me, good, if not, I give up. I already tried GameSir PocketTaco and it's got a horrible d-pad plus my phone case is too thick for it.
You may go to >>>/vr/ and look for /hhg/ but note that general is full of trolls and shills.
>>
>>109435707
You can't be serious, these are so bad for your eyes and even for your hands. As a collectable perhaps or as a curiosity maybe.
>>
>>109436035
>it's impossible to play anything even on full brightness unless you manage to find a good shadow or go inside.
Honestly I disagree. I found the RG 40XX-H to have a pretty decent screen for outside use even with almost direct sun exposure.
>>
>>109435707
I have an R36S and have had a lot of fun playing emulation up until Dreamcast, as well as some portmaster games like GTA or Binding of Isaac.
The benefit is that it's really cheap too. But I strongly suggest buying your own SD card because the ones these devices ship with are low quality.
>>
>>109435707
Anbernic announce a third generation GBA SP clone that is identical to your picrel but without analog sticks and a metallic colour scheme. It will allegedly cost ~$60. Plays up to PS1 with some n64 and PSP. Russ made a preliminary review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ac2GW3BJSjE
If you must have a GBA SP form factor and you have 60 bucks to spare I don't see why not.
>>
I've been using a miyoo+ and enjoying it. I don't play super often, mostly on the plane when i'm traveling for work.

Tried everything from neo-geo, mame and pc-98 (that one is pretty spotty) to before that without issue.
>>
>>109435707
If you JUST want GBA stuff then the new RG SP looks like the best option. It's pretty much a 1:1 recreation. The Miyoo Flip is also really nice with the same form factor as a GBA SP but a 4:3 screen, meaning it's better for a wider range of retro stuff. However, lots of people have experienced broken hinges. Mine has been fine and the white color option seems to have less issues with it, but it's still a concern.
>>
just buy a good joypad for your phone and stop bothering with those crap things from china.

I have thiis exact model handheld with MuOS installed and it works great, definitely worth it. It's fun for GBA games but most everything else looks weird on a screen with this aspect ratio. If you're looking for something to play anything other than GBA games, you should get something else more powerful with a bigger screen.
>>
>>109435707
I'm waiting for the RG SP.
>>
Is an Ayn Thor base model with just 8gb of ram worth buying for Swtich and some light PC emulation?

GBA SP is a shitty form factor and the hinge will be the first thing to break so I wouldn't bother unless you're a huge nostalgiafag, something psp-like is much easier on the hands. And yes chinkhelds are good and reliable.
>>
>>109439011
This. This specific model is probably the best of the H700 handhelds in terms of ergonomics, size, etc.
>>
>>109435763
the cheap and light weight thing means it's less hefty in your hands. The original GBC/GBA felt heavy by comparison, this just feels top heavy.
For $75 you get something that can play other consoles games. If you want to play pirated shit on a GBA you need the Everdrive which is really expensive and then it still eats two lithium AA batteries in a few hours.
This comes with no need for modding, it charges via USBC, the lithium ion battery is already here, you dont need sto spend $40 for an upgrade kit so your GBA doesn't eat 2 AA batteries every day, the screen is better, and comparable to an upgraded one, it's 640x480 4:3 and has an adjustable back light, you can play some games online, you can do portmaster which has a bunch of ported games like fallout 1 and 2, the controls suck on them. ship of harkinian 1 and 2 feels like N64, someone ported stardew valley and undertale, and 100+ other games.
The 40XXV which is the one i bought is a cheapo, it will play up to 'some' psp games, right now the only ones I've tested are Trails in the Sky, Persona 1, 2-1, 2-2, and 3, and a bunch of playstation and GBA games.
Fallout 1 and 2 work, sort-of. The controls suck. I can't get Switchfin working, it's supposedly a jellyfin port. There's a spotify port that only works with premium, friday night funkin works like a champ.
>>
>>109438325
for what this costs just get a jailbroken switch lite
>>
>>109435707
anon have you ever noticed that all the people who own these things have half a dozen different models and spend more time collecting them than playing games?

There's a psychological difference. You'll get more satisfaction out of putting a real cartridge into a GBA, even if it's just a flash cart. There's a selection process. There's a finite-ness to the experience. You press power, it boots directly into the game and nothing else. Buy one of these android devices, and you're right back to doomgaming - when you can just save state anywhere, jump between rooms, hell jump between generations of roms, your tolerance for challenge and frustration drops to zero. Your dopamine receptors are already fried from your phone, and now you're putting your old games in the exact same context. You'll boot it up, play for a few minutes, get zero satisfaction, and then try to convince yourself that you just needed even better hardware to play on, which is how these people end up buying so many of these things.

Mod your GBA with a proper display or find a Micro online, and just get a cheap $20 flashcard. Load no more than four games on it at a time. Enjoy your time.
>>
>>109438788
Reviews are great, but only GBA, MSX, and MSX2 have perfect scaling with no boarders.
>>
>>109439703
>have you noticed this imaginary thing I just pulled out of my ass?
I can guarantee you I have played orders of magnitude more retro games than you ever did on a GBA, shittier hardware doesn't make you enjoy games more.
>>
>>109435707
>>109436035
Honestly all the linux based ones are shit. Rocknix and Knulli are using a terrible GUI that was designed for use on TVs and shitberries, and looks like they were made by boomers for "MUH NOSTALGIA"
muOS is closed source shit thatz pretends to be open source, the dev releases some of the menu code and shell scripts so others can "fix" them, but keeps the linux kernels with his own patches and the buildroot scripts to himself
With Android devices you have to usual Android stuff to deal with, but at least you can easily customize them to your liking and install whatever you want on them. There's also a SteamOS like distro being made for SD8 devices but so far it shares some issues with Rocknix.
>>
>>109439939
I completely agree. RG ARC's 6-button design is useless on CFW because all CFW expects that you have 4-button device, so only stock supported the extra two buttons. Weirdly no one addressed this.
>>
>>109439853
If you want to convince anyone, you have to dial back the impotent seething at least a little bit. The whole "buyers remorse" look isn't good.

Protip: getting other people to waste their money and be as miserable as you are won't make you feel better
>>
>>109440336
Stop making shit up if you ever want a serious discussion you weirdo.
>>
>>109439939
I'm currently using stock modified anbernic, i tried Knulli, hated it, tried mushroom os, hated it.
I hate how if i want to swap OS, one of them only reads stuff in ALL CAPS and the other one only reads files in all lowercase, and properly capitalized file names aren't read by either one.
>>
>>109435707
I have a retroid pocket 3 and never use it. I just emulate on my computer and play on a tv or my laptop because handhelds aren't really useful unless you're a child. The only times I ever think oh I should bring this is airplanes and then I just end up reading a book
>>
>>109440336
I just sold my retro game collection on ebay for like $3800. I'll just play on my computer if I ever want to play them again. I had moved with all that shit like 5 times and it just sucked. I sold my tube amps as well and just got an hx stomp for guitar instead. Have already done the le retro le analog le pure memes, not worth it.

Konkr Pocket Advance once it comes out.
Anbernic SP lookalikes are more than capable of emulating GBA games, but the SoC doesn't even support sleep mode properly. The device heats up a lot when playing and the fucking chip is literally on top of the battery with no insulation.

>>109440703
I'm not a fan of the basedjak walls of old Nintendo shit either. The happy medium is keep one or two things you plan to play and sell the rest. If it is not hooked up get rid of it. Flashcards solve the game problem.
>>
>>109440347
There is nothing to discuss. You are miserable and refuse to face the nature of your addiction. I'm simply warning the other anon away from your mistakes.
>>
I don't like Anbernic devices, because they don't charge with all cables.

The Retroid and Ayn devices are very good.
>>
Physical controls have seen some improvement over the years but chinkshit software on the latest 1.5x out of date node of mobile soc isn't really worth it.
>>
>>109441780
Yeah I'd rather just use my computer than use an ancient screen or mod an ancient device. If you actually want a mobile device just get a retroid and call it good they can already emulate up to ps2 with an oled screen and hall sticks, the hell else do people need. Flashcarts and modding is bloat. I have a living room computer and a game saar controller with a 75" tv and just put any controller games I want on that.

That is false. GBA emulators can connect to each other with WiFi, Bluetooth, or Internet.
>you cant connect your emuslop device to a gamecube to hook up to pokemon colloseum
That is false. You can connect a GBA emulator to a GameCube emulator.

>but connecting to muh original hardware
Irrelevant. Emulation is superior so it's the only thing that matters.
>>
>>109445148
>this is false you can do something diffferent
>>
>>109445156
"False" is just a convenient shorthand. Your criticism is not applicable to people who emulate, so it is false criticism. It is inherently irrelevant and misguided. People who emulate have access to these features while having much more convenience than people who use original hardware.

Go play with your archaic garbage hardware.

>>109445031

RG34XXSP is pretty well made and has a decent screen. If being able to play the systems it can handle (up to PSOne comfortably, a bit of dreamcast and PSP), then you can get one for cheap and load it up with games. There's also a little bit of distrohopping to do. Probably the best bang for buck in terms of handhelds you can get to play old games.
>>
>>109435707
luv me RG34XX, simple as

Anbernic is good about their more recent bootleg gameboys (especially once they started shipping them with Retroarch preinstalled), but with other manufacturers you need to make sure the screen and software are good. My first ever bootleg gameboy wasn't Anbernic and it came with a 320x240 screen that scaled everything like shit, plus you had to install custom firmware to get anything to run at least remotely accurately.

also, fuck off >>>/vr/hhg
>>
>>109435707
I really tried getting into this, I bought a Retroid Pocket 4 Plus or something, was pretty "high end".
I couldn't look at that small android screen, my eyes were burning. I hear people love this stuff, I had to go sleep for a while just so my forehead wouldn't hurt so much.

The fact these are phone screens (i guess) really hurts the immersion and in my case the eyes too.

Controls and etc were ok otherwise.
>>
>>109435707
I bought the rb35xx and had a lot of fun with it. SNES games work great and I checked out some PS1 titles too. The build quality feel good but I had to stop using it because the small GBA form factor hurt my wrist. I've tried to play with it after about a year of sitting in a drawer but the battery is dead and won't charge anymore. On the other hand I went to a Chinese supermarket last week and they had some $4 clone with no SD card slot that was made with the lowest imaginable quality plastic.

anbernic makes solid devices from what I hear. The deciding factor is whether the processor is enough for what you want to play.
most of them will do up to and including PS1 but only the higher end stuff is capable of gamecube/ps2/switch emulation.
for a powerhouse that runs everything the deck was a great deal before the price rise but you'd have to be one big nigga to get it in your pocket.
>>
>>109458628
>most of them will do up to and including PS1
All of them do PS1 and older just fine. It's N64 that struggles on the cheapest models like the one in OP's image. Although those can even run some PSP games at full speed, which just shows how difficult N64 is to emulate without workarounds.
>anbernic makes solid devices from what I hear.
They do, but they tend to use shitty chipsets for the higher end models. Dimensity chips only have proprietary drivers available to them, so they lack some game optimizations and aren't as compatible with some emulators and with Proton for PC games. So while their chips are on paper more powerful than most of their competitors who use Snapdragon chips, they're just not good for gaming.
