What's actually the right display gamma? Nobody can seem to agree on whether to use a linear tail, a pure 2.2 gamma function, or even BT. 1886 for that matter.

If I set my OLED to sRGB, banding becomes extremely obvious at dark levels. Even though this is how things were "intended" to look, it's not very appealing.

This is the answer. 10-bit PQ at 10K nits peak still has better quantization than 8-bit SDR at 200 nits peak. Gamma functions don't actually match optical psychophysics, so there is no "right gamma".

literally all media uses bt709. they're slowly starting to use the more modern 1886.

hdr still uses one of bt curves.
mostly because media is still tailored for old televisions even though they no longer exist.
you can't avoid sdr, even in 2026.

I agree on HDR, but actual 10K nits causes the light to occlude other dimmer pixels, making the final displayed image loose fidelity. It's so bright that it even forces your eye to adapt and causes it to let less light in.

also at these brightness, light scattering on particles becomes a real issue

If the PQ curve were instead set to 1K peak, quantization would have been even better, and you could probably get away with 8-bit and still have comparable quantization errors with traditional SDR.
