What's actually the right display gamma? Nobody can seem to agree on whether to use a linear tail, a pure 2.2 gamma function, or even BT. 1886 for that matter. If I set my OLED to sRGB, banding becomes extremely obvious at dark levels. Even though this is how things were "intended" to look, it's not very appealing.
Idk lol it's not that deep, I just use the default settings
>>109435838bt.709
just adjust sliders until it looks good. who cares anyway.
>>109435838Techlet like yourself should perhaps google "display calibration process" and go from there.

>>109436012Nobody uses the BT. 709 transfer function in practice.>>109436032Dunning-Kruger post.>>109436284This is the answer. 10-bit PQ at 10K nits peak still has better quantization than 8-bit SDR at 200 nits peak. Gamma functions don't actually match optical psychophysics, so there is no "right gamma".
>>109436604literally all media uses bt709. they're slowly starting to use the more modern 1886.
>>109436284hdr still uses one of bt curves.mostly because media is still tailored for old televisions even though they no longer exist.you can't avoid sdr, even in 2026.
>>109436604I agree on HDR, but actual 10K nits causes the light to occlude other dimmer pixels, making the final displayed image loose fidelity. It's so bright that it even forces your eye to adapt and causes it to let less light in.also at these brightness, light scattering on particles becomes a real issue
>>109437460One is an OETF, the other is an EOTF. There is no shift since they were never meant to supersede one another.>>109437503If the PQ curve were instead set to 1K peak, quantization would have been even better, and you could probably get away with 8-bit and still have comparable quantization errors with traditional SDR.
wikipedia said sRGB still photo has linear to 12 2.4 curve there onRec.709 video has linear to 7 2.4 curve there oni do not know about hdr monitor sRGB mode warm is nice
>>109435838you are supposed to use a lower gamma if you are in a brighter room and higher if you are in a dark roombasic shitif you are a gamer lowest possible to hihglyight detail dakr detail or black eq
>>109435838Whatever gamma makes it appear to me eyes as it would appear exactly in real life under any circumstances
