I want to run Linux under Windows, with DE (probably XFCE) and 3D acceleration.
>why
Because I can.
>m-muh dual boot
No.
So...
Do you suggest WSL (running Debian 13) or QEMU-KVM (will also run Debian 13) running under WSL?
I'm blocking outgoing and incoming svchost from firewall, so telemetry shouldn't be a factor. I'm also blocking WSL automounting all my drives, so it SHOULD be sandboxed enough...
Should I just eat the small performance cost of going VM inside VM inside VM?

>small performance cost of going VM inside VM inside VM
That's not really small. A single virtualization layer is negligible. But two layers is where the problem begins.

Why do you want to do this even?
>>
>>109436175
Just get rid of Windows altogether, there has never been a better time. WSL uses a VM anyway.
>>
>>109436175
Just use VMware with 3d accel. Also, be careful, your keystrokes can still be logged from your host and make sure to have recall disabled, because your screen scan still be screenshotted. I recommend you to use a separate GPU and passthrough a separate keyboard, that way M*crosoft can't spy on you.

You know VMWare's 3D acceleration is garbage right?

I want to try making a linux native game using GTK and OpenGL. Just for fun.
>>109436205
I'd very much rather not, that's why I'm asking this to begin with, come on anon at least try to read the room a little.
>>109436211
I get better performance with WSL than with either VMware or Virtualbox.
>keyboard logging
What the fuck, they do that too now? I don't even have recall, I'm on leeteeseecee.

Well duh of course.
>I want to try making a linux native game using GTK and OpenGL. Just for fun.
You know WSL2g exists and can open GUI applications, right? Why do you need a second VM?

At least it's there, I use 3D accel on qemu/kvm, it's okay-ish. Better than nothing.

Yeah, but "only" for diagnostic purposes and they have a placebo toggle in the privacy settings, to turn it off.

I mean google has this for a while now :/ so we are cooked... think thrice before you type slurs

Because KVM virtualizes hardware better than WSL2 ever could.

Why do you need to virtualize hardware? It's also emulation, not virtualization.
>>
>>109436175
juse use xen or kvm.

if you're too retarded for that, then use qemu on windows.

in any cases, you'll get actual performances, because they killed wsl 1 which was way faster but microsoft can't implement a sandbox on their own os.
>>
>>109436242
While you can use GTK and opengl, you'll end up fighting GTK because it's not meant for ui that refreshes many times per seconds.

If you want to use opengl, then why not use literally any ui library made for games, like nuklear or imgui?

>wsl runs a linux vm
>so you can install the linux version of qemu (instead of the windows version for some reason)
>so you can run a linux distro inside it

what's even the point? you'll likely not get any acceleration inside the qemu vm because it first has to go to wsl.

>wrong usage of the term acceleration in provided context.

>>109436175
You should use WSL2 since it has proper 3D acceleration with OpenGL AND Vulkan thanks to Vulkan-on-D3D12 Mesa driver. With QEMU, Virtualbox, VMWare you will only get bad OpenGL performance.
>QEMU-KVM (will also run Debian 13) running under WSL?
That's running VM in 2 layers which is retarded and you still won't get proper 3D hardware acceleration.
>>
>>109436391
>Because KVM virtualizes hardware better than WSL2 ever could.
That's given you're running Linux on bare metal, and there's no guarantee that WSL2 provides APIs enough to run QEMU's KVM acceleration, and you won't benefit with it at all since it still will be managed by Hyper-V
>>
Why has no one suggested Cygwin? Cygwin is basically reverse wine, you can run native linux applications on windows using Cygwin
>>
>>109436175
Ive tried literally everything (including xephyr running in wslg) and in the end vmware worked the best, if youre going for a graphical linux environment running on windows. everything else is just not worth it (vmware player is free now btw, even commercially)
