I found these primarily through linkedin. At the time it was easy enough to skip useless postings because it told you which ones were paid placement or not (so 90% of each page was auto-skip). The rest worked out well enough. I would also expand from those initial companies I'd apply to by searching who their competitors are and applying there as well, things like that.

If you didn't land one the 2nd year of school with a any company related towards your major your fucked. Your first year should be working in the colleges lab or IT related bullshit, some local high schools might take you in for a tech refresh which is better than no experience as a programmer.

Like I explained, I am in a fairly unique position where I do give applicants with that kind of application a chance, which is not standard among recruiters at my level. The thing that usually gets me to put these kinds of applications in the trash pile are not the lack of work experience or education, but if the projects are shit I expect out of a freshman's weekend project and not even particularly relevant to what we're doing.
What I look for in the profiles I get are signals that the person can do this job and wants to do this job. Except fake/indian applicants, I have only ever rejected 2 pre-interview on #2 (one had submitted a resume clearly aimed at a totally different company doing totally different things, the other stated at the top of the resume in the background section that he was looking to try out some programming, while we needed someone who actually was able to hit the ground running due to time and budget limitations at the time). #1 is a very low bar, but the amount of 'b-but I cloned this repo from that one course and didn't even bother changing the README.md!' applicants is mind-bogging. These are auto-rejects unless something real special rescues these kinds of applicants. Otherwise we are getting AI slop nowadays, but it's not all that frequent yet (unlike what the headlines appear to say). Don't do that shit and I would at minimum get you in an interview.

Like I said before: that only applies if you can find me, most people have a hard requirement on degrees these days.
