So I just ordered three thinkpad g14 gen 1 because a store dumped the prices and almost gave them away for free.
Any good ideas what I can do with them? I guess gifts for family and stuff like that. I'm gonna pretend like I'm a 1337 hacker/programmer.

My trusty 13 year old T540p is dying :(
FML.
Just as I put a gorillion new stickers on it.
FML*FML.

I habe 3 options:
>Put money into it to keep it going a little longer
Don't really want to do that.
>Getting a W541
I've got an offer for one in phenomenal shape for 170 yurobucks, I'd upgrade and mod that to the max.
>Get something else entirely (15/16" + Numpad, max 500€)
I'm not sure what so I came here to ask you guys.

3 options, what do? I've got like two semesters left in my bachelors and I'm going to enroll in a masters right after without any delays.

That's a beast laptop, Anon, it's got more room if you need more memory, these are retarded fast laptops, you can't go wrong with a T15 or whatever that is.

>who the fuck needs to bend their laptop like this?
You'd be surprised, in an industrial environment like the international space station, or a workshop, laptops may need to be mounted in specific ways to do a job, having the 180 degree hinge is required.
>>
Whats the best laptop to buy currently for $1500 - $2000 AUD.
Need it for full time uni and some basic AI stuff.
>>
>>109443837
>basic AI stuff
you'd be better off having a desktop with a dedicated graphics card for that
besides the low end graphics cards like rtx 3050, 4050, and rx6500m, you get diminishing returns on more expensive graphics cards in laptops, and they get really hot and noisy. they're just not worth it.
compared to a desktop where you get the most bang for your bucks, and you have significantly better upgrade options. you don't really want to do ai on a laptop
my suggestion would be to get a cheap laptop like a thinkpad T14 gen 2 or 3 for $200-300, and spend the rest of the money on a desktop instead you'll get far more bang for your bucks that way
sadly graphics cards are getting shit expensive, and amd started increasing prices just recently. the rx9060 16 gb would've been great but it's probably more expensive now. you want to have at least a 16 gb vram graphics card for ai
>>
>>109443957
Yeah. thank you. I've got a very powerful desktop with a 4090 so I was just looking at something decent
>>
>>109443533
>who the fuck needs to bend their laptop like this?
Niche use cases, plus extra range of travel is always nice. About a decade ago I would setup my X230 like that whenever I came home from uni and plug in a USB keyboard; there was a noticeable drop in temps thanks to unimpeded air flow, the screen was now more even with my eye level, and it was a more efficient use of desk space since I could move the keyboard around for papers/textbooks. It's not the most useful feature but it's a nice bonus that doesn't sacrifice anything.
>>
>>109444640
I wouldn't even consider it niche for the use thinkpads get, especially in the days where TN panels were the only thing on laptops and were even worse than the ones now, the thing was unviewable if you're not looking directly at it, which means if you're thinkpad is on a table with you standing there doing something while needing information on a laptop, you need to open that screen to a pretty extreme angle, nowadays with IPS that's not as much of a problem but it's still nice to open your laptop to an angle where you can see even without having to sit down, or worse, hold the laptop while working.

Good morning everyone,
I posted in the last thread that I was looking for something to replace the Macbook air from 2015 that I carry in my bag. I got recommended a 6th gen X1 Carbon m. Unfortunately since it’s 14 inches it won’t fit in my bag. My computer is about 11 inches and fits snugly in my bag, so i was hoping to get something in that size? I don’t mind older computers since netbooks have fallen out of fashion. But anything that could run at least slightly better than my current machine and was a similar size would be nice. Any insight or help would be very much appreciated. Thank you
>>
>>109446158
The smallest thing I believe Lenovo makes is the 12.5 inch X series, so we're talking the X280 which would have similar processors to a Carbon Gen 6 but be a little smaller, but I don't think anything comes close to the 11 inch Macbook Air, it got to the point where Apple even discontinued the 11 inch Air after your 2015 model and sold the 13 for a bit before making that a retina and soldering the ssd like a bunch of dicks, but a thinkpad X280 is what we would recommend if you're looking for smol laptop

Thank you both kindly for the suggestions but I think even these are too big. All this is making me miss my old X100e. I had one and it got me through college on a single core in 2015.
I think I might just get a lighter weight distro than Xubuntu (even though my main reason for running it is because of how cute the Logo is in fetch. I really love that cute mouse.)
I’m also even contemplating getting an x120e since it’d be dual core but at that point I should just stick to my air.

Thank you all for your help, I genuinely appreciate your time and knowledge. I hope all of you have a wonderful day.
>>
>>109450289
You too Anon, it really is tragic how ultra small laptops and netbooks just kinda went away, I remember back in the day my 8.9 inch aspire one was amazing for taking a desktop OS like Ubuntu 8.10, XP or 7 beta at the time, one could only imagine how useful a sub 11 inch notebook could be with modern technology and storage.
>>
>>109450352
Also that's based if you're considering just continuing with Linux on a MacBook Air, I had a 2017 Air (2015 hardware) with Mint XFCE and it was actually really good despite the Mac-ness of it.
>>
>>109450352
>>109450374
I whole heartedly agree on how sad it is that this size ceased to exist. It was my go to for portable computing. I always preferred to carry a small notebook in my bag than to carry a backpack with a full laptop. One would imagine with how powerful small cpu’s are and how fast storage is it would be appealing to the average consumer. Although I lament to think the niche netbooks server has been filled by modern smartphones. Tragic indeed.

Also, thank you for the kind compliment. I prefer to make my technology go as far as they go, even breathing new life into old machines.

(PS, the captcha had a symbol that looked like the Arch logo.)

Honestly Anon, if the Air is doing the job, keep using Linux on it as long as possible until it can't handle what you're doing, it's a super thin little computer that looks nice, I do miss that even having sold it for a slightly thicker Thinkpad 14 inch that had ethernet and more ports, but for basic use a MacBook Air is really good.
>>

I've got Mint Cinnamon on my MBA 2017. I put in a 512 GB ssd and haven't felt the need to go back to MacOS. The hardware is solid and it's great for everyday basics. Wouldn't mind a less obsolete display though.
>>
>>109450561
>Wouldn't mind a less obsolete display though
I know right? I thought 1440x900 on a 13.3 inch was the best shit ever because I had never owned a retina mac or anythng better than 1440x900 on a 14 inch, and then I got a 9yo T470 with the FHD 14 inch, which was a holy shit moment because it's such a big res in a small space, but not so much res that you can't see anything at 100% scaling, that's a sexy screen right there anything less really becomes obsolete, and even still guys like Louis Rossmann will consider 1080p in a 14 inch "poverty".
>>
>>109450590
I had been using a 10.1" IPS Asus Transformer with Windows 10 previously and honestly this screen felt like a bit of a downgrade from that even though the resolution was higher. I've gotten used to it now but it was surprisingly bad at first, especially for 2017.
>>
>>109450629
Yeah once you go from a high dpi screen to a lower one it's fucking brutal, I had been using my T470 for an hour or so to set it up, and then when I sit at my U2412M with 94ppi instead of 157ppi, it looks horrible because you get so spoiled.

I feel pretty lucky, I just picked up a x200 for under 50usd and as far as I can tell it works fine.

>>
>>109455312
The only T16 Gen3 that's below 700€ has a locked BIOS but it's still under warranty.

I assume I would be retarded to buy that one. I have a CH341A with which I flashed my T540ps BIOS, but I guess doing shenanigans like that would void the warranty? Would Lenovo even unlock the BIOS under warranty if I bought it?
>>
Has anyone done a supervisor password unlock on a T43? I'm struggling to locate the relevant component. I have a pair of these, one that is up and running in great shape, and another one with a password that would be neat to bring back up to functionality, because it has an ATI GPU. Supposedly shorting pins at the right time can help with getting past the SVP, but finding info on which component it is is tough, and there are TONS of SOIC-8 parts all over the planar.

Fine if you can fit what you do in two cores and 8 GB (or 16 if money isn't an issue, but at that point you may want a maxed out X270 instead). It's a comfy little machine with enough ports and space for lots of storage and battery.

I sort of doubt refurbished business laptops are going to get immensely more expensive, they just want to get rid of them. But of course it wouldn't hurt buying one now, I think thinkpad t14 gen 2 or 3 or elitebook 840 gen 8 give you the most bang for your bucks right now. if you want a backup/spare, shouldn't be better than you zbook

>You should get a Kaby lake laptop,
Like something from the x70 gen? T570 or something?
Hope it won't fare like my last Kaby Lake. It was an Acer Aspire F15 something, it blew up in 2020 after a faulty Manjaro-Linux update (???) fucked something in the firmware which violently released the magic smoke from the chokes after an audible explosion, deep frying the poor 7700HQ inside; which is when I got my T540p as a replacement because it was sub 200€ and I was (still am) a poorfag student.
I must admit, it makes me chuckle now.
>it's so damn cheap
The ones I see are the more expensive than Coffee Lakes though. German eBay is literally called eGay in the German vernacular. A good deal, but confusing.
>goes faster than a haswell
I don't know chief, the 4810MQ is within 10% of any chip that was based on the skylake microarchitecture during the 14nm+++++++ meme era.

The first Intel CPU gen that handily beat intel on mobile was 12th gen.
>and holds 32GB DDR4
The W541 in question is already equipped with 32GB DDR3L

I feel like it's an unbeatable deal for 170€, and one of the reasons why I'm even considering a W541. That and the fact that I've already got the "infrastructure" to accommodate x40 gen ThinkPads like spare parts, batteries and docks. The only thing that seriously scares me is that there's no new original batteries being produced anymore and if it wasn't for 03X7530, I'd have made the jump to something newer already.

Question is, do I pull the trigger or nah?

T460/T470 at the fucking minimum because it's the same price as classic shit and destroys the performance and is leaps and bounds ahead at just being modern, do not waste your fucking money over a blue enter key, also don't buy a T440p and spend retarded amounts of money making it a quad core beast with 16GB of RAM because now you're in T14 Gen 2 territory when it comes to price and the T14 will smoke that thing.

Why not spend the extra 100-400 on a nice machine like a T14 gen 2/3/4/5?
I mean thinkpads depreciate so little compared to other enterprise laptops, you can just sell your clapped out gen 2/3, add like 100-200 and buy another semi-new machine once every 2-3 years.
>>
>>109481197
I do recommend the newest T14 you can buy in the budget due to how much laptop you get for the money, but what I cannot advise is people spend T470 money on a sandy bridge thinkpad or something, it's all about price to performance, a full complete T470 for $80-$90, worth it, a T420 meme machine for $120-$150, not worth it, a Based T480 with 59% more performance than a T470 for more than 200% more money, also not worth it, get a newer and faster T14.

T14 gen 2 or X1C gen 6, both last ones of their series with the 1.8mm mogger keyboard.

T14 gen 2 has a way better 11th gen cpu, but the x1c6 while only 8th gen has way better lcd panel, glass trackpad, always backlit keyboard, lighter, nicer materials. In terms of optimal I'd pick between those two rn.

X1C10/T14Gen3 can be considered for their 16:10 panels, but you will have a moderately inferior 1.5mm keyboard.

>>109480571
As for classic thinkpads, x61/t60 are moggers as both are core2duo (good enough for 720p youtube) and have the vastly superior 4:3 panels.

4:3 is objectively superior and allows for more screen real estate on a smaller chassis, also does not have the ugly fat bezels of post 4:3 classic thinkpads.

I would advise these over t420, as while 2520m is a substantial upgrade 16:9 subhuman class business tn is a horror
>>
>>109481784
>16:9 subhuman class business tn is a horror
So true, it wasn't until you could commonly get a 14 incher with 1080P was it "okay", but 1366x768 and even 900P are crap, the new T14s are based as well with 1200p tallwide, I am loving the return of 16:10 even on asus ROG laptops
>>
>>109481805
Main issue with those t14 are the base 3 panels have low colour gamut (like 70% srgb) and thick matte anti glare, oh god they're a million times better than thinkpad tn but yeah this fact is an advantage to x1c which always comes with glorious high gamut panels

Got an old laptop HP pavillon dv6 made in either 2009 or 2010.
It had Windows 7 on it and ran very slow.
I installed Lubuntu on it and it ran quicker. Boot to password was 1m24s and lauching the web browser the first time took 13s.
I had a sata 3 ssd laying around that I wasn't using so I went and replaced the HDD in the laptop with it. The laptop only supports sata 2 though so it's speed capped. I installed Lubuntu again on it and it now boots to password in 44s and the web browser launches in 4s. That's quite an upgrade. SSDs are a must to revive old laptops.
>>
>>109481848
SSDs are probably the greatest speed increase to computers since Core 2, it's hilarious how much of our time in the 90s and 2000s was spent waiting on fucking hard drives.
>>
the T14 i bought secondhand has a dying EC controller and the SSD is also exploding
RIP Snuggles 2026-2026

anyway, if you get a vPro make sure you disable the management crap to claw back a chunk of performance. the vPro is not compatible with Win 10. for fan speed use TVICPort + TPFanControl. the T14s are extremely hot by default. watch temps!

I normally shit on T480 for being crazy expensive for what it is but that's reasonable as fuck, now that's what I'm talking about when it comes to reasonable purchases, 60% more performance than a T470 but it's like 60% more money.

>moderately inferior 1.5mm keyboard
Used to be my opinion until the ultra-slim trackpoint on my two-year-old work laptop became unusably biased to the top and left. Hadn't seen anything like this in 14 years of using stinkpad keyboards before the 1.5mm change.
>>
>>109481755
Go for AMD, seriously.
Even the latest keyboards are fine, the second you start scrutinizing them, you will not want to leave the last century once you experience a 90s thinkpad. Even something like a T60 is a noticeable downgrade.
>>109484762
I'd be more worried about the screen being glossy and whether it's 1080p or not. The touchpad being scuffed has net positive value for me because I just disable them at all times.

3:2 is good, but we'll omly have to wait and see, or custom mod readily available 4:3 screens and 3D print new chassis
>>
>>109490188
I unironically still use the 60 series up to this day, I have a major project about it, but until I finish my research on absolutely all components on the market that are compatible or can substitute subcomponents I won't release nuffin cuz I hate rolling releases of stuff

I'll post about it on thinkpad forums, you'll know when you'll see it, hopefully by the end of Q4 of this year (I don't have any R60 models of any kind at all and digging through forum posts sucks balls, too much fluff and most pics are deleted, but aparently the X60 still has NEWLY MANUFACTURED LVDS SCREENS, which is dope ngl)
>>
>>109490128
Omg it's insane how much cheaper these other models are compared to the t480, with so much better specs. What exactly do you lose out on by getting this instead of the t480?

I really don't need anything powerful, I'm fine on a dual core Chromebook running i3, I've used one for a year straight in 2025. I guess I'm afraid about repairs, more parts = better in my head. I just want a laptop for which repair parts will be easy to come by, and I dont want random garbage included with it (like a proprietary BIOS, or a forced rape chip).

A lot of times on /g/ some zoomer on a 16 core gamer phone (who runs skyrim on the toilet) tells me I have a slow device, when in reality the most intensive things I do are web browsing, MPV video playback, and playing open source shooters like serious Sam or xonotic. I have dedicated machines for gaming that aren't allowed to connect to the regular internet. So I dont really know what "outdated as fuck laptop for the money" means. Will it last for a very long time? Easy to source parts for? Will it break instantly? I dont even open multiple tabs in my web browser, but I dunno how slow is too slow for nu /g/.
>>
>>109493389
>So I dont really know what "outdated as fuck laptop for the money" means
It means that you're wasting money on things just because they're older, not because it makes it a better, laptop, something like a T480 will have the 1080p screen, have the trackpad buttons, have a quad core processor that beats haswell, faster wifi, faster everything, and you wouldn't even have to touch anything except RAM if you felt like upgrading, and T480 is kinda overpriced but that's still a better value than having potentially $300+ in a Haswell laptop that goes slower.

You should give it to gf, those Lenovo notchbooks are sweet, I'm pissed my mom has one and I don't but she gotta make a living.

I will say I'm surprisingly torn - by all metrics the P14s is a more capable machine, with basically 50% more CPU cores, better GPU, better thermals and socketed ram. However, the build quality on the T14s is significantly better - there's basically no deck flex when typing at all, which is very satisfying.

Maybe i'm just a chud who deserves the unrepairable unupgradeable disposable consumer grade tech slop every company is trying to sell us...

Basically it annoys me more that fan speed changes at low loads, I want it to be constant at low loads.

Do all thinkpads have shit battery life? I've got one at work that apparently costs like 5k USD new and its battery life is hot garbage. What's a thinkpad for someone that cares very little about performance (all work will be done via running bash commands, anything heavy will be done remotely via SSH) but cares heavily about battery life and having a laptop that won't break if you look at it wrong?
>>
Opinions on ThinkCentres?
I'm getting paranoid about hardware prices and I thought about getting a couple of spare computers. I can get an M710 with an i5 6500, 8GB of RAM (to be upgraded later) and a 256GB SSD for 99 bucks.
>>
>>109508171
We could have modern thinkpads with like, 72 hour batteries if the juden at the top didn't take processor efficiency as an opportunity to make the laptop evermore progressively thinner, with a smaller battery to match. Imagine if we had a T420 with modern internals and the rest of the space was all battery.

But no.

Marketing queers and women in focus groups want laptops measured with a micrometer so we're forced to suffer.
>>
>>109509677
They're fine Anon, a business class computer from Dell of Lenovo second hand is a good value in general compared to buying used 14nm parts and throwing it together, but do look for an i7 8700 thinkcentre if you can because it's at least a 6 core CPU.
>>
>>109509677
As long as corpos have unlimited budgets and mandatory upgrade cycles, you'll never have any problem getting functioning ewaste.

if you don't have an immediate use case, i'd hold off for a better deal - if you check recently sold on ebay, comparable machines with 16gb ram regularly go for $100 or less, or much better machines with newer architecture, more storage and more ram go for only slightly more if it's in budget.

I wouldn't really rush into buying some underpowered garbage right now just as a spare. i don't think the current market trends for new hardware is really going to affect prices on used trash, most of these companies just want their old shit gone and will more or less give it away.
>>
>>109509909
>Imagine if we had a T420 with modern internals and the rest of the space was all battery
God that would be amazing, as glad as I am that stupid shit that DVD drives went away and laptops got thinner, but you wonder what kind of beast computer you could've had with more cooling space, or the insane battery you could get on a 15W U processor with a giant ass battery.

At the very least they're taking the ssd out, Which when you think about refurbishing and how thin the profit margin is, the cost of replacing a 256gb ssd or whatever came in an old nvme thinkpad is the difference between you making money on ebay or not, which means a lot of ThinkPads are dying a very early death via getting parted out compared to the days where they had spinning storage thay you could zero out and it was good. And there were just so many fucking laptops around.

I don't have another laptop to test this ram slot on (others use ddr3). Is there a reason it might not be recognized?
Or could this odd stick actually be DDR3 and mislabeled? I only remember it was from a now defunct Inspiron from 2018 ish

Found a decent looking T14g2 with 16gb ram and 512gb, for like $340,

two questions: decent price for what it is?
Is it worth looking at gen2 t14s? I would like to upgrade some shit at some point, would this be alright for that or should I be looking more at a 480 type?
>>
>>109533110
T14/P14 Gen2 and beyond are the only thinkpads worth considering for price to performance, the T480 is silly money for what it is and sub $100 gets you a dual core Kaby Thinkpad, so there's really no reason to mess around with old 14nm shit laptops unless you're a weirdo like me who is into $100 or less laptops that hold 32GB of RAM, otherwise get a Gen 2 Lenovo or as new as you can possibly afford because that's the most laptop for your money.
>>

Having a touchscreen rapes your battery life. Also, I've read that it can *slightly* affect image quality due to the digitizer, though I'm unsure of how trivial/non-trivial it is.

The alternative is having a non-FHD display, but personally, I'd rather maximize battery life than focusing on viewing experience; especially since laptops aren't meant to be ones main system.

Its all good, the batteries in both my T470s are blown, these are basically like portable workstations that I can throw into a bag with a wireless mouse and charger and take whatever I need on the go, but the display does look good, you wouldn't even tell it was a touchscreen just looking at it, it looks as good as my regular FHD T470 and it doesn't wash out at funny angles.

>>109535457
All of these are fine to start with but they're also some of the easiest to overpay for. Make sure you know what you're getting for the money.

>X220
Small bean for light use when travelling. Biggest flaw: no displays above 1366x768.
>T440p
Most tinkerable being the only one with a replaceable CPU. The stock touchpad is shit, consider the replacement as part of the price unless you use the nipple exclusively.
>T480
Only one with modern niceties like NVMe and >16GB RAM, but it isn't as well-built as the others.

If you can't find these for a good price, X270/Yoga370, L440, and T470p/A485/T495 respectively are good alternatives.

doesn't really matter. get one you can get for cheap. pretty much any thinkpad made after 2010 is OK to start tinkering with linux. I would aim for 8G+ RAM - browsers are bloated mess and tend to leak memory.

T480 has been memed to death and prices have shot up.

I've personally found a half dead T440p for 60$, changed the battery, switched the CD caddy for an extra memory HDD, and added more ram.

Between the 3 choices the T440p is probably the most practical between the two, as the X220 and T480 are now way too expensive nowadays while the T440p has that famous modularity and repairability

You can technically switch the buttonless trackpad for the t450 which has the standard buttons with the help of several guides online, but i don't recommend to do it unless you're already comfortable playing with the cables and connections. I fucked the trackpad to motherboard cable and had to salvage another dead t440p for it

X220
Pros: badass larper form factor and old school keyboard
Cons: old as fuck. works on Win10 or Linux
T440p
Pros: Modularity, CD Caddy, 4 usb connections
Cons: Heaviest of the 3. Clunkpad. Limited Port variety

T480:
Pros: Newest and fastest, all slotted Ram and SSD
Cons: Meme tax. T470 or T490 better priced alternatives atp

>>109536556
I've come to get used to the clunkpad desu. I like getting to click anywhere in the touchpad and have a notable travel.
>L440
You're better off with a T440s if you can't afford/find the T440p. All the xx40 gens are incredibly easy to disarm

It's because Coffee Lake was a reaction to AMD's ryzen, and then suddenly ultrabooks were quad core now, it's kinda retarded because double the cores on a T480 doesn't even make it double the performance of a T470 due to them still being 14nm, base clocks took a shit, and you could only get about 59% more performance out of a 15w processor with 100% more cores, which is why I tell people to either get a T470 with a backlit keyboard (means it has 1080p screen) for $90-$90, or just get the newer 10nm T14 laptops that came after because of the value you get for the money at $250-$300 that people are wanting for a nice T480.

Also on social media people memed it as best thing ever, so average retards with no intention of opening the fucker were wanting this stupid thing, which actually makes it a worse value than a consumer laptop from ther store because at least with a new computer from the store you get a new battery and a laptop that just works and isn't 8 years old, We deal with old chinkpads in spite of themselves because they're supposed to be cheap, but the T480 just isn't that, it doesn't matter if you can have two matching SO-DIMMs if the entire thing is slower than a T14 Gen2 for the same money.
>>
>>109539249
I don't really care for faster clock speeds. I like the fact that the T480 (iGPU) barely consumes any power. After swapping out the battery and installing an aftermarket 6-cell, I get 10 hours of battery life on Linux.

Also the T480 supports coreboot, with instructions on disabling the Intel ME permanently. This is only relevant if you're a computer schizo.

https://github.com/coreboot/deguard/tree/main/data/delta
>>
>>109539299
>I like the fact that the T480 (iGPU) barely consumes any power
Lel it's the same HD620 on the chip as the T470 Anon, and the T470 has the lovely SO-DIMM slots, and the coreboot I think, that's what makes it so hilarious people are paying $250 to $300 for these things when they can go far cheaper for 14mm technology on the T470, or get something newer and faster and make their money work for them.
>>
>>109534069
Yeah but most of the time the touchscreen panels are the better ones you can get. You can disable it in software if you don't like it, but I don't know if that really helps restore any battery life or not.
>>
>>109539326
Well to be fair, you could also turn off the Intel ME on the T470 by setting the HAP bit, just that with the T480 you could gimp that part of the BIOS, which is what deguard does.

The T470 is a good choice. I think there's also an "enterprise" 2560x1440 option out there, but they are rarely sold on eBay and come with a additional price premium.

I think you guys should check out old chromeboxes as well. They are incredibly cheap ($20-$30) and are perfect as emulation systems and DIY smart TVs. You can coreboot these as well, thanks to a hero named MrChromebox. They are capable devices once stripped of the Google firmware.
>>
>>109539356
It's true, 1080p non touch screen with the IPS panel is so rare to find on a T470 that I impulse bought it because it was cheap and I've never had an IPS screen on a laptop before, I'll probably never see one like this again on eBay because the thing looked like it was a Thinkpad 25 with the ir bullshit on the lid but I was in fact a T470 (T470 apprently had IPS panel supply issues when it was new which makes it rare), and the seller never even mentioned or priced the ad with touchscreen ips in mind, I only saw it in the Windows 10 system properties did it say touch support.

>>109539423
I actually do like the idea of chromeboxes being used as main PCs because they're so low power, I like NUC computers but they're so much money

That sounds right in the awkward zone where text becomes too small to read without scaling, but the 1.2 to 1.3 scaling factor that would make it readable would make everything blurrier than a regular 1080p or 1200p panel.

>>109539505
>tfw it does exist
That's absolutely insane though, when 1080p in a 14 inch screen at 100% scale is pushing it, and 125%-150% scaling already looks gorgeous, it's no wonder it's rare because it's a 14 inch laptop, you don't need 1440p, and god forbid something not scale at all, you're fucked trying to see it, it's annoying enough when I boot the T470 into Memtest and it's all tiny and shit, but at least it is readable.

Honestly Anon, don't even bother swapping the 25th keyboard and top case into a T470, if you can get a T470 with the 1080P screen cheap enough, just get it, you don't even have to ram in 32GB of SO-DIMMS like me but they usually have one 8GB stick and you can cheaply add one more 8GB stick for dual channel (gains 10% CPU performance) and it's a super nice laptop that will be a good experience without having to do much to it, it's so unappreciated compared to a T480 which keeps the price low.

>>
>>109541625
>its getting really hard to find non-retarded prices of everything
Unfortunately true, that's why I just keep telling people to get T470s, it's just the most modern thing you can get for about $100 American all day long on eBay despite its nu-thinkpadness it would be one thing if a based T420/T430 was like $50-$70 compared to $85-$100 for a T470 1080p screen, but the T420s are like $120-$150 for a good condition one, so it's less performance for more money, and that 7-row keyboard isn't gonna help you put more than 16GB of slow ass 1333MHZ RAM in that bastard, nor will it help your everyday performance, meanwhile the T470 is often found on eBay with an 8GB stick of 2133 DDR4 in there, a 256GB NVME with 1.6 GB/s read, 1080p screen, backlit keyboard, holds up to 32GB has modern ports like lightning, ditches stupid legacy crap like VGA and DVD drive that was making thinkpads absurdly thick and heavy for no reason, on and on it's just the best $100 laptop there is at the moment, if T480 ever becomes $100 or less then you can get it, but while they're well over $200, either get a T470 or get the T14 that came after.

I've been needing to get a new laptop recently, and was looking at the ThinkPad X1 2-in-1 Gen 11, which ticks all the boxes for me (14-inches, 120 Hz screen, Arc B390 GPU, and 2-in-1 with stylus support). Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad notebook for tinkering if you like it, but I would go for something more modern with ryzen as other anon pointed out. Battery won't last long. Depends on usecase.

I still have maxxed out/docked 8470p in my study room that I use often and I'll keep using for years to come, but I wouldn't move it around the house or travel with it.

Hey /tpg/, haven't changed laptop since 2013 but my machine is finally starting to kick the bucket. Since I haven't bought anything computer related since then needless to say that I'm kind of lost (understanding the difference between different processors and such is a headache for me). Somehow chatgpt recommended me to look for a "T14 Gen 3 AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 6650U with Radeon 660M iGPU" or "T14 Gen 2 AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U with Radeon Graphics" so I thought I'd check with the thinkpad enthusiasts (I honestly don't want to think too much about this). I told it that it's mostly for basic browsing, multimedia, and some light gaming. That I was fine with second-hand or refurbished and that I'd like to avoid going above 1k euros and no apple products. Also asked for a decent monitor since I do a lot of drawing (no need for touch-screen though I'd rather use my pen tablet). For the record I've been using an ASUS X550CC for the past 13 years (see picrel for specs) and it's still running everything relatively smoothly on windows 10 ltsc. I can even run games that recommend a minimum of 8gigs of ram as long as it's the only thing running. The reason it's dying is because I've physically broken it. I plan to slap ltsc on the laptop I purchase or linux if I feel like trying.

Let her rest and get yourself a nice T14 Gen 2 Ryzen, Anon, that'll run Windows 10 and based Linux.

and they say AI is a scam. I've got T14 Gen 2 AMD Ryzen 7 5850U and it's a beast compared to everything I ever had. Go for it anon.

>limited to 37W 4C
Theoretically yes, but the 47W chips undervolt well enough to fit within 37W from what I've seen, and even if you're unlucky, you can just reduce the power limits. The 450 G1 that I've installed 4700MQ in can sustain 2.5 GHz on all cores within 37 W, and 440 G1 is the same board and I think also the same fan.

Alright. Found the exact model from the 2nd recommendation, T14 Gen 2 AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U with Radeon Graphics with 32gigs of ram and a 512gigs SSD for 400€, is it a good deal?

It's absolutely worth it Anon, will suit you very well for years.

>Except elitebook has metal base and probook plastic one.
Wasn't planning to go hiking with it, so it's ok. I treat my computers gently.
>I doubt it can cool down 47W cpu properly, so you are limited to 37W 4C - if you can get it these days
Officially HP does list 47W i7s as compatible, but I wasn't planning to go for them anyway - the difference isn't going to matter if it's going to thermal throttle. 37W i7s are very much available, it's not a problem to get one.
>Battery won't last long
Also not a problem, my usecase doesn't involve taking it out from the socket for long, and as for battery wear - replacement batteries are readily available.
>I would go for something more modern with ryzen as other anon pointed out
Honestly I would too, but it's not going to be my main daily driver and I'm kinda broke atm. Eventually I'll get something more modern to replace both main desktop and this ProBook.

>with 32gigs of ram and a 512gigs SSD for 400€
Buy it before it's gone. If you don't like it, you'll be able to resell it for more than that in 1-2 years.

>>109547411
>Buy it before it's gone
Seriously, do not wait and drag your ass when it comes to complete chinkpads with RAM and SSD in it for a good price, they will buy it form under you.

do i need 32gb ram on my t480 if it basically sits next to my desktop as a pseudo-TV running youtube videos daily
>>
>>109548723
If you're just using it as a basic streaming computer, 16GB is more than enough, 32GB is for streaming with a bunch of tabs going, a Windows virtual machine going, etc.

do you even business machine?

That's gangster as fuck, Anon.

Why are T14 G1 and G2 such hot commodities nowadays? What's with the uptick on praising them as good? it's fucking difficult to open the lower half on those things. are they getting offloaded by businesses?

now it enjoys its retirement as occasional old software tester/cd burner/car diagnostic laptop :')

At least the clips don't break if you so much as look at them wrong. I'd say it's harder to open any of the Tx40-Tx80 intact than a T14 G1-G2.

Buying new business laptops as a consumer was never a good idea.

its a e14 g7. I looked it up its "cheap" for ram. I should have bought it back when it was 50€...

that's so sick. I bought my t14 gen 5 in january when the 32 gb version was 800 €, and I could upgrade to 64 gb for 90 € more. Lenovo was really late to raise the prices for ram, because at this time one 32 gb sodimm stick already was 300 € on amazon. so of course I bought the 64 gb ram version (2x 32 gb not soldered), even though it's a bit overkill for this laptop.

anyway, before that I still used my old x220 and I must say, the t14g5 is a huge upgrade and I don't want to go back.

My T470s's left alt key occasionally gets (not physically) stuck so that I have to push it down really hard to get it to stop inputting alt, how should I fix this?
>>
>>109553680
try pulling it out see if there is anything stuck between the plastic you can press it back again and it will clip itself back
>>
>>109553388
>I'd say it's harder to open any of the Tx40-Tx80 intact
True, on my T470 you need to run a plastic trim tool around the thing to unclip the bottom, cause if you manhandle it you will destroy the bottom, what's nice is the thing clips back together to well, the screws are almost pointless.

can't really blame you. I bought 64GB for my T480 (100 euros during black friday 2024) and 32GB for my A485 (65 euros) before the prices started rising too, and even upgraded my desktop to 128GB from 64 for like 200 euros. feels good not being a RAMlet
