that's not Workbench 2.05

People wax poetic about how stable and amazing Win2k was but I've had more bugchecks on it than vista.
>>
>>109443449
The startup theme was so damn beautiful, it was pretty much how the year 2000 sounded imo.

20 years ago people were bitching nonstop about win2k crashes so it's even more bizarre to me that it has such a positive reputation now
and no I'm not mixing it up with ME but we all know how bad that was
>>
>>109444703
windows users are tsundere for windows
>win2k is le shit. 98 is more reliable
>ummm akshually 2k is good now
>xp is le shit. it uses twice as ram as 2k and 60 times as much as 98 and is still a crashy pos
>ummm akshually xp is le goated. vista is shit
>vista is le bad. xp was le goated. those childish modern windows and their fancy uis for gays. ugh
>umm akshually if u install sp2 and download more ram it's good
>7 is not shat on because it's just vista sp2 with a large taskbar
>8 sucks. gay tablet ui. 7 is le goat
>10 is FUCKING SHIT. 8 + classic shell is peak
>11 is jeetslop ai trash with react ui. windows 10 ltsc is as good as it gets
>>
>>109445065
yes, anon, windows gets more stable with time, hardware gets better so it handles bloat and poor optimization better, and enshittification is getting progressively worse. as bad as the current windows is, the next windows can still get worse
the real question is if the next windows will reach a point where it's still shit after you wait for the previous version to stop being viable. I'm still on w10 and I'm thinking this might be the time I finally move to linux. w11 is just too fucking broken, I think. but we'll see
>>
>>109445277
I'm jumping ship as soon as some really good support for Adobe on Linux is available. I need a lot of their shit for my job and doing it at home and I loathe having to use Windows for it.
>>
>>109445065
Never happened.

Windows was for the most part a continual improvement until we reached the pinnacle of windows 2000, then it was down hill after that. XP/2K3 was still ok after some tweaking. But it went over the cliff starting with vista. I am currently running windows 7 and I hate it with every fiber of my being. I dream every day to return to real windows.
>>
>>109446104
What does vista+ do wrong that win2k does right? genuine question
>>
>>109446123
Well the big one is removing all hardware acceleration from the gui. But aside from that there is numerous changes that were bad, various damages to explorer, questionable architectural changes, brain damaged new apis.

Like, whoever designed SetFileInformationByHandle needs to be sent straight to the gas chamber.
>>
>>109444703
I only remember 15 years ago that everyone complained about 9X being unstable and how XP was extra problems and how NT 4/5 were the systems to run, win2k in this case for also having less bloat
>>
>>109443449
The source code for 2K is out there. Someone should just release some updated service packs to it. Specially now with multiple coding-capable LLMs.
>>
>>109447885
15 years ago was 2011, nobody was using windows 2000 by then, let alone nt4
>>
>>109443449
Is Windows 2000 good if I can only run it inside a VM?
What can I even do with it if I can't and won't run games on it?
I dislike most games, actually, not just old ones. But I really hate the early 3D.
>>
what are good ways to emulate win2k on linux? i've ran it in qemu but cirrus vga sucks - there is no acceleration. even fucking icy tower can't run properly (it has a black screen unless in window mode placed partially below taskbar). also sound is glitchy and slow
>>
>>109450737
Tried 86box? Far better than the old QEMU way.
>>
>>109450768
>86box
Hope you enjoy running your shit at 166/200mhz maximum.
>>
>>109450541
windows xp starts much faster in qemu.
>>109450737
try vbemp driver. next upgrade would be compiling qemu-3dfx I guess.
>>
>>109445065
Err what? Wasnt 2000 NT literally MORE stable then 9x? Retarded millennial lol
>>
>>109453940
bloated pos. consooms 30MB of ram doing nothing while 98 only used a fraction. imagine having to buy 128MB of ram just to play Half Life and jazz jackrabbit
>>
>>109453983
So you use 98 for the next 2 or 3 years and then upgrade your system as it drops in price. What is the problem here? Operating systems were rapidly improving then with actual features and im sure much of that ram usage was beefed up security, etc.
>>
>>109444703
All I know is that 98SE vs 2000 Pro was night and day, 2000 was a rock by comparison and no worse than XP either

the aesthetics were impeccable in the 95-2000 era. xp was too y2k and bubbly.

this era was fantastic
>>
>>109450196
I was still using windows 2000 in 2011, though only just, software compatibility was getting pretty painful at that time. I began the process of moving to XP in 2012.
>>
all white men that actually used windows 2000 have families and children and have no reason to return to driverless legacy shit
zoomers that circlejerk over obsolete software do not have families and children and cope in hilarious ways

>>109443449
Unironically best Windows from early 2000s for gaming and media.
>>
>>109456749
Win2000 was soo good I skipped ME, XP and Vista and finally moved on when Win7 came out.
I'm doing the same with Windows 10 right now but future looks grim. Probably gonna move to linux somewhere in 2030s.

This.
I got my Windows 2000 MSCE at the start of my career.
I am 5 years from retirement with a federal pension.
House is paid off, one kid just graduated university and the other is in her second year.
I use a mac now.
I miss being young and I miss the optimism we had in those days.
I dont really miss the outdated tech.
>>
>>109456760
> Probably gonna move to linux somewhere in 2030s
Linux is in the process of being ruined. There is no escape.
>>
What's better, 2000/XP or XFCE+Chicago95+wine/winemake/winegcc if I want an old-style development environment?
>>
Supermium was abandoned by it and you have extend the kernel so much to get modern software running on it that you are practically just running Windows 7 with an older shell.

>he needs a browser
Let me guess, you need to run your AI overlords because otherwise you don't even know what the mouse is for.
>>
>>109458841
2000 or XP, no question about it.
The way you worded it, you clearly aren't going to do anything productive with it. It's not an insult, just an observation.
No matter how much you try to shoehorn anything Linux into something resembling old Windows, it will always have that uncanny feeling of something not belonging there. Like the token negro and token foid in a group photo.

i have the same itch. emulation is the way to go. wine is ok an emulating games, but not so good in emulating let's say vs 6.0. looks wrong, doesn't work properly, fonts are messed up, icons are missing, etc.

>emulation
Doesn't that run literal orders of magnitude slower?
Which is something I don't understand, because we can literally emulate Wii U's 1.2GHz CPU on shit hardware, and that's another platform entirely (PowerPC VS x86(-64)).
But I couldn't run 86box at more than 200mhz on a 3.6GHz Ryzen.

i have my little 2000 machine i made with scraps of oldest hardware i still had on hand. it wasn't painless, especially looking for compatible drivers but it worked in the end. bonus: wxwigets 3.2 still compatible (compiled windows 2008 for the lastest compatible crt)

Linux is rotting in various ways. Wayland, Rust. And of course the general process of enshjtification which all software goes through in this fallen era.

I'd love to, but it has no support for modern hardware.
